BackgroundIncreases in invasive group A streptococcal disease (iGAS) have recently been reported multiple countries the northern hemisphere, occurring during, and outside of, typical spring peaks. We report epidemiology of iGAS among children Australia from 1 July 2018 to 31 December 2022.MethodsThe Paediatric Active Enhanced Disease Surveillance (PAEDS) Network prospectively collected patient notifications for young people aged less than 18 years admitted five major Australian paediatric...

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic and relevant non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) interrupted the circulation of common respiratory viruses. These viruses demonstrated an unprecedented asynchronous resurgence as NPIs were relaxed. We compiled a global dataset from systematic review, online surveillance reports unpublished data Respiratory Virus Global Epidemiology Network, encompassing 92 sites. compared timings within each site synthesised differences in across sites, using generalised...

To The Editors: Pediatric Emergency Department (ED) attendances have fallen markedly in countries worst-affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but reasons not been fully elucidated.1,2 Anecdotes exist of late presentations with serious non-COVID-19 illness, problem has closely studied. We aimed to measure and characterize pandemic's impact on other infection-related admissions (non-COVID-19) at an Australian tertiary pediatric hospital during most restrictive period interventions (April 1–May...

A 7-year-old girl with tuberculous (TB) meningitis developed optochiasmatic arachnoiditis, a vision-threatening paradoxical reaction, after starting TB treatment including adjunctive steroid therapy. She was treated infliximab complete recovery. This is the first report of use tissue necrosis factor α inhibitor for severe reaction in child.

Paradoxical reactions in central nervous system tuberculosis (CNS-TB) are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. We describe 4 HIV-uninfected children treated for CNS-TB severe paradoxical unresponsive to corticosteroids. All made recovery after treatment infliximab, highlighting the safety effectiveness of infliximab this complication, need prospective trials.

We report a child from Southern Australia (New South Wales) who presented during La Niña event with encephalopathy and acute flaccid paralysis. Magnetic resonance imaging suggested Japanese encephalitis (JE). Steroids intravenous immunoglobulin did not improve symptoms. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) resulted in rapid improvement tracheostomy decannulation. Our case illustrates the complex pathophysiology of JE, its' geographic expansion into potential use TPE for neuroinflammatory sequelae.

Abstract Background Chest x-ray (CXR) is commonly used (when available) to support clinical management decisions for child pneumonia and provide a reference standard diagnosis in research studies. However, its diagnostic technical limitations both purposes are well recognised. Recent evidence suggests that lung ultrasound (LUS) may have utility pneumonia. This systematic scoping review of on the CXR LUS severe childhood aims inform pragmatic guidelines low- middle-income countries (LMICs)...

Abstract Background Reducing antibiotic use in Australia, and the subsequent impact on antimicrobial resistance, requires multiple, sustained approaches with appropriate resources support. Additional strategies to reduce prescribing include effective vaccines, against pathogens such as Streptococcus pyogenes , most common bacterial cause of sore throat. As part efforts towards assessing benefits introducing new prescribing, we aimed determine burden for throat general practice. Methods...
