Enterovirus 71 (EV71) causes epidemics of hand, foot, and mouth disease associated with neurological complications in young children. We report an outbreak EV71-associated that occurred from February through September 1999 Perth, Western Australia. Fourteen children culture-proven, EV71-induced were identified. Nine patients (64%) developed severe disease; 4 these long-term sequelae. Neurological syndromes included aseptic meningitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, acute transverse myelitis,...

EXamining everolimus In a Study of Tuberous sclerosis 3 (EXIST-3) demonstrated significantly reduced seizure frequency (SF) with vs placebo. this study, we evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety for tuberous complex (TSC)-associated treatment-refractory seizures. After completion core phase, patients could enter an open-label extension phase receive (target exposure, 3-15 ng/mL) ≥48 weeks. Efficacy end points included change from baseline in average weekly SF expressed as response rate...

Abstract There have been a number of physiological studies motor recovery in hemiplegic cerebral palsy which identified the presence novel ipsilateral projections from undamaged hemisphere to affected hand. However, little is known regarding afferent projection sensory cortex and its relationship reorganized cortical output. We used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) investigate corticomotor unaffected hands group subjects with palsy, also performed functional resonance imaging (fMRI)...

Pediatric neurology is the medical subspecialty responsible for diagnosing and managing diseases disorders of nervous system in childhood adolescence. In many, but not all, regions world, discipline pediatric recognized as a specialty or either pediatrics. Significant knowledge competencies this area are necessary to be effective clinical practice. The need driven by high burden disease from neurologic conditions children effect on their families. As first part multistaged project under...

Seizures occur more frequently during the neonatal period than in any other time of life. Neonates with seizures have an increased risk mortality and neurodevelopmental sequalae such as epilepsy, cognitive motor disability, sleep, behavioural dysfunction. The clinical conundrum accurate diagnosis optimal interventional packages persists.1 There are wide variations (6%–56%) estimates sequelae survivors due to varying methods identification seizures, size population, case series versus...

This diagnostic accuracy study compared the of seizure detection by amplitude-integrated electroencephalography with criterion standard conventional video EEG in term and near-term infants at risk seizures. Simultaneous recording (2-channel raw trace) was done for 24 hours each infant. Amplitude-integrated interpreted a neonatologist; neurologist independently. Thirty-five were included analysis. In 7 seizures on EEG, there 169 episodes which only 57 identified EEG. had sensitivity 33.7%...

Abstract Background Chromosome 22q11.2 is susceptible to genomic rearrangements and the most frequently reported involve deletions duplications between low copy repeats LCR 22A 22D. Atypical nested are rarer can provide a valuable opportunity investigate dosage effects of smaller subset genes within disorder region. Methods We describe thirteen individuals from six families, each with atypical central region 22B then compared molecular clinical data for patients this study few duplication...

Background: An altered breathing pattern in sleep, over two to three weeks, reported by the parents of a child on Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS) therapy for refractory epilepsy, prompted sleep study him. His polysomnography (PSG) revealed respiratory irregularity concordant with VNS activation. Dyspnoea is well recognised and side effect VNS. However there are only few studies looking at respiration We therefore undertook PSGs seven other children Methods: Sleep were undertaken, accordance...

There is a high incidence of mortality and neurodevelopmental sequelae in babies with neonatal seizures. The electroencephalography (EEG) background has been shown to be an excellent predictor outcome by most studies, few suggesting limited value prognostication. Previous studies suggest poor prognosis severely abnormal backgrounds, but prediction was difficult moderate abnormalities. proposed numerical scoring system for the EEG provides objective method evaluation improved reproducibility,...

Objectives– To study the efficacy, tolerability and safety of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy in clinical practice, 16 children adolescents with refractory epilepsy. Methodology– We assessed efficacy VNS therapy, retrospectively by comparing seizure frequency, duration severity at time most recent follow up (av: 24.9 months) to that 4 weeks prior surgery. Changes quality life, sleep behaviour last review was compared VNS. Adverse effects elicited specific questioning, spontaneous...
