Filoviruses, amongst the most lethal of primate pathogens, have only been reported as natural infections in sub-Saharan Africa and Philippines. Infections bats with ebolaviruses marburgviruses do not appear to be associated disease. Here we report identification dead insectivorous a genetically distinct filovirus, provisionally named Lloviu virus, after site detection, Cueva del Lloviu, Spain.

Abstract The aim of the study was to determine incidence viruses causing aseptic meningitis, meningoencephalitis, and encephalitis in Spain. This a prospective study, collaboration with 17 Spanish hospitals, including 581 cases (CSF from all sera 280): meningitis (340), meningoencephalitis (91), (76), febrile syndrome (7), other neurological disorders (32), 35 without clinical information. CSF were assayed by PCR for enterovirus (EV), herpesvirus (herpes simplex [HSV], varicella‐zoster...

Understanding the role of humans in dispersal predominately animal pathogens is essential for their control. We used newly developed Bayesian phylogeographic methods to unravel dynamics and determinants spread dog rabies virus (RABV) North Africa. Road distances proved be better predictors movement RABV than accessibility or raw geographical distance, occasional...

Summary Rabies is the oldest known zoonotic disease and was also first recognized bat associated infection in humans. To date, four different lyssavirus species are causative agents of rabies European bats: Bat Lyssaviruses type 1 2 (EBLV‐1, EBLV‐2), recently discovered putative new Bokeloh Lyssavirus (BBLV) West Caucasian Virus (WCBV). Unlike world, cases Europe comparatively less frequent, possibly as a result varying intensity surveillance. Thus, objective to provide an assessment...

Rhabdoviruses infect a variety of hosts, including mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, insects and plants. As bats are the natural host for most members genus Lyssavirus , specificity amplification methods used active surveillance is usually restricted to lyssaviruses. However, presence other rhabdoviruses in has also been reported. In order broaden scope such methods, new RT-PCR, able detect diverse range rhabdoviruses, was designed. The method detected 81 86 different rhabdoviruses. total,...

To determine the presence of European bat lyssavirus type 1 in southern Spain, we studied 19 colonies serotine bats (Eptesicus isabellinus), its main reservoir, during 1998-2003. Viral genome and antibodies were detected healthy bats, which suggests subclinical infection. The different temporal patterns circulation found each colony indicate independent endemic circulation.

Abstract Both hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and human immunodeficiency (HIV) are underdiagnosed, particularly in low-income countries difficult-to-access populations. We carried out cross-sectional study 139 individuals (31 healthy controls, 68 HCV-monoinfected patients, 40 HCV/HIV-coinfected patients). ELISA used anti-HCV anti-HIV...
