The impact of depressive symptoms on outcomes acute exacerbations chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) has not been thoroughly evaluated in prospective studies. We prospectively enrolled 230 consecutive patients hospitalised for AECOPD, without previous diagnosis depression. Depressive were with Beck's depression inventory. Pulmonary function tests, arterial blood gases, COPD assessment test (CAT) and Borg dyspnoea scale recorded admission days 3, 10 40. Patients monthly 1 year....
Gamma interferon release assays (IGRAs) are increasingly used for latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening in patients with rheumatic diseases starting anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) therapies. We compared the performances of two IGRAs, an enzyme-linked immunospot assay (T-SPOT.TB) and immunosorbent (QuantiFERON-TB Gold In Tube [QFT-GIT]), to that tuberculin skin testing (TST) LTBI 157 consecutive anti-TNF Among 155 valid results, 58 (37%) were positive by TST, 39...
Although the use of e-cigarettes is increasing worldwide, their short and long-term effects remain undefined. We aimed to study acute effect short-term containing nicotine on lung function respiratory symptoms in smokers with airways obstructive disease (COPD, asthma), "healthy" smokers, healthy never smokers.Respiratory symptoms, vital signs, exhaled NO, airway temperature, resistance (Raw), specific conductance (sGaw) single nitrogen breath test were assessed before immediately after term...

Materials and methods We extended our protocol in a larger group of never smokers smokers. implemented the same with nicotine free e-cig studied 60 subjects before after smoking an containing 11mg (Group A). Group A: 9 51 (24 had no overt airways disease, 11 asthma, 16 COPD). Another 10 used B). Lung function assessed pre post use including lung volumes, airway resistance (Raw), specific conductance (sGaw) slope phase III. The brand both groups, 0mg nicotine.
Materials and methods We studied 64 subjects (aged 22-65 years, 34 men) divided in 2 groups. Group A: 12 never smokers 29 healthy smoked for 10 min a single e-cigarette containing 11mg of nicotine B: 14 9 0mg nicotine. The same brand e-cig was used both groups with similar liquid ingredients but two different concentrations. Vital signs, symptoms questionnaire, Oxygen Saturation (SpO2), heart rate(HR)] indices airway inflammation (exhaled NO, airways temperature) were assessed pre post smoking.

All current long smoking history. A group 10 non-smokers was also included. The same brand e-cig used for min inhaled 11mg. Clinical symptoms, vital signs, -heart rate, oxygen saturation (SpO2) exhaled CO, assessed pre post the use.
<h3>BACKGROUND:</h3> Hospital admissions for COPD exacerbations account 70% of total costs treatment, and the duration hospital stay is directly related to this cost. The aim study was investigate possible associations demographic, clinical, laboratory, functional parameters with subjects admitted provide a score prediction need prolonged hospitalization. <h3>METHODS:</h3> We included 164 consecutive 2 respiratory medicine departments tertiary hospitals exacerbation, we evaluated possibly...
Current guidelines recommend an initial pleural aspiration in the investigation and management of suspected malignant effusions (MPEs) with aim establishing a diagnosis, identifying non-expansile lung (NEL) and, at times, providing therapeutic procedure. A wealth research has been published since suggesting that results outcomes from may not always provide sufficient information to guide management. It is important establish validity these findings 'real world' population.A retrospective...
Data on the relationship between pleural tuberculosis (TB) and anti-tuberculosis drug resistance are scarce. To determine patterns of among Mycobacterium isolates in Greece incidence tuberculous effusion (TPE) patients with multidrug-resistant (MDR) or extensively drug-resistant (XDR) pulmonary TB.Drug susceptibility testing (DST) results recorded database National Reference Centre for Tuberculosis Athens, Greece, over a 9-year period (2003-2011) were reviewed. Chest X-rays from hospitalised...

The aim was to assess the distribution of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in treated patients with pulmonary disease (PD) Greece.Patients for NTM PD at two largest chest diseases hospitals Greece, period 1990-2013 were investigated. For years 2005-2013 data on isolation frequency recorded.M. avium complex (MAC) predominant cause followed by M. kansasii and rapid growing (RGM). pathogenicity RGM significantly lower than this MAC kansasii. An increase observed percentage isolated species...
