This White Paper presents the science case of an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), focused on structure and interactions gluon-dominated matter, with intent to articulate it broader nuclear community. It was commissioned by managements Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) Thomas Jefferson Accelerator Facility (JLab) objective presenting a summary scientific opportunities goals EIC as follow-up 2007 NSAC Long Range plan. document is culmination community-wide effort in following series workshops...
We report measurements of π±K±, and p, ¯p inclusive cross sections fractions in e+e− annihilation at √s=29 GeV, for the momentum interval 0.01<z=ppbeam<0.90. The analysis is based on approximately 70 pb−1 data collected with TPC2γ detector facility SLAC storage ring PEP. Detector upgrades result significantly improved coverage precision data, compared to previous measurements.Received 9 May 1988DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.61.1263©1988 American Physical Society
We report measurements of the two-photon processes ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}{K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, at an ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ center-of-mass energy 29 GeV. In ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ data a high-statistics analysis $f(1270)$ results in...
We have observed the formation of two spin-one mesons in \ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma} fusion reactions which one photon was highly virtual. The first, consistent with being ${J}^{\mathrm{PC}}$${=1}^{++}$ ${f}_{1}$(1285), seen final state \ensuremath{\eta}${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ (\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}), as \ensuremath{\eta}'(958). previously reported observation second state,...
Two-photon production of KS0K±π∓ states has been studied by the TPC/Two-Gamma experiment at SLAC storage ring PEP. A resonance mass 1.42 GeV was seen when one photons quite virtual but not both were nearly real. Production a spin-1 meson, which cannot be made two real photons, would fit these observations. The Q2 dependence data in region agrees with this spin assignment and is incompatible spin-0 hypothesis. width are similar to those E assigned JP=0− JP=1+ different experiments.Received 14...
Results are presented on the exclusive production of four-prong final states in photon-photon collisions from TPC/Two-Gamma detector at SLAC ${e}^{+}$${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ storage ring PEP. Measurement dE/dx and momentum time-projection chamber (TPC) provides identification 2${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$2${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, ${K}^{+}$${K}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$,...
By observing the reaction γγ→Ks0K±π∓, TPC/Two-Gamma experiment at SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP has obtained a 95%-confidence-level limit of Γι→γγB(ι→KK¯π)<1.6 keV for ι(1450) meson. If, as is likely, ι decays predominantly into KK¯π, resulting Γι→γγ appears to conflict with previous assignments an observed ργ decay and also many analyses η-η’-ι mixing. The contrast this small γγ width large rate J/ψ→γι evidence that glueball little admixture qq¯ states.Received 6 March...
The reaction 12C(νμ,μ−)X has been measured near threshold using a π+ decay-in-flight νμ beam from the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility and massive liquid scintillator neutrino detector (LSND). In energy region 123.7<Eν<280 MeV, spectral shape is consistent with that expected Fermi-gas model (FGM). However, flux-averaged inclusive cross section {[8.3±0.7(stat)±1.6(syst)]×10−40 cm2} more than factor of 2 lower predicted by recent random phase approximation calculation.Received 28 September...
The total hadronic cross section for virtual photon-photon interactions is reported center-of-mass energy, W, between 2 and 20 GeV. data were obtained via the process ${e}^{+}$${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${e}^{+}$${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\mathrm{*}}$${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\mathrm{*}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e $^{+}e^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$+hadrons with both scattered ${e}^{+}$ ${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ detected. Each photon's...
We have searched for the two-photon production of ηc, χ0, and χ2 charmonium states at SLAC e+e− collider PEP in channels γγ→K±K0Sπ∓, γγ→K+K−π+π−, γγ→π+π−π+π−, γγ→K+K−K+K−. identify four ηc candidates K+K−K+K− channel on a negligible background; one φφ event among them implies 95%-confidence-level (C.L.) lower limit Γγγ(ηc) 1.7 keV. In other we find no evidence any three states. establish 95%-C.L. upper limits Γγγ(ηc)<15.5 keV, Γγγ(χ0)<17.0 Γγγ(χ2)<4.2 From all combined, obtain value...
We measure an inclusive branching fraction of (13.9 ± 2.0+1.9−2.2)% for the decay τ−→ντπ−π0+nh0(n>~1), where h0 is a π0 or η. The data sample, obtained with time-projection-chamber detector facility at SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP, corresponds to integrated luminosity 72 pb−1 29 GeV center-of-mass energy. measured somewhat greater than theoretical prediction and, errors taken into account, could resolve present difference between and sum exclusive τ± fractions one charged prong.Received 1 July...
Following reports of anomalous dielectron prediction in the mass region near 6 GeV at 400 GeV, we searched for an enhancement reaction ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{hadrons}$ and ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ SPEAR center-of-mass energy range 5.67-6.43 GeV. The leptonic hadronic cross sections show no statistically significant peaks. In this range, 95% confidence level upper limits decay width into electron...
