The UniCarb KnowledgeBase (UniCarbKB; http://unicarbkb.org) offers public access to a growing, curated database of information on the glycan structures glycoproteins. UniCarbKB is an international effort that aims further our understanding structures, pathways and networks involved in glycosylation glyco-mediated processes by integrating structural, experimental functional glycoscience information. This initiative builds upon success structure GlycoSuiteDB, together with informatic standards...
Recent progress in method development for characterising the branched structures of complex carbohydrates has now enabled higher throughput technology. Automation structure analysis then calls software since adding meaning to large data collections reasonable time requires corresponding bioinformatics methods and tools. Current glycobioinformatics resources do cover information on function glycans, their interaction with proteins or enzymatic synthesis. However, this is partial, scattered...
The application of semantic technologies to the integration biological data and interoperability bioinformatics analysis visualization tools has been common theme a series annual BioHackathons hosted in Japan for past five years. Here we provide review activities outcomes from held 2011 Kyoto 2012 Toyama. In order efficiently implement life sciences, participants formed various sub-groups worked on following topics: Resource Description Framework (RDF) models specific domains, text mining...
In the bioinformatics field, many computer algorithmic and data mining technologies have been developed for gene prediction, protein-protein interaction analysis, sequence protein folding predictions, to name a few. This kind of research has branched off from genomics creating transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, glycomics areas in postgenomic age. given complexity glycan structures with their branches monosaccharides various conformations, new methods an attempt gain better...

Bacteria use carbohydrate-binding proteins (CBPs), such as lectins and modules (CBMs), to anchor specific sugars on host surfaces. CBPs in the gut microbiome are well studied, but their roles vagina involvement sexually transmitted infections, cervical cancer preterm birth largely unknown. We established a classification system for designed Hidden Markov Model (HMM) profiles data mining of bacterial genomes, resulting identification >100,000 predicted available at unilectin.eu/bacteria....
Abstract Glycans participate in a vast number of recognition systems diverse organisms health and disease. However, glycans cannot be sequenced because there is no sequencer technology that can fully characterize them. There “template” for replicating as are amino acids nucleic acids. Instead, synthesized by complicated orchestration multitudes glycosyltransferases glycosidases. Thus vary greatly structure, but they not genetically reproducible usually isolated minute amounts. To (sequence)...
Abstract Dynamic changes in protein glycosylation impact human health and disease progression. However, current resources that capture phenotype information focus primarily on the macromolecules within central dogma of molecular biology (DNA, RNA, proteins). To gain a better understanding organisms, there is need to functional glycans biological processes. A workshop titled “Functional their curation” was held conjunction with 16th Annual International Biocuration Conference discuss ongoing...
A glycan consists of monosaccharides linked by glycosidic bonds, has branches and forms complex molecular structures. Databases have been developed to store large amounts glycan-binding experiments, including arrays with proteins. However, there are few bioinformatics techniques analyze data for glycans because tools that can handle the complexity Thus, we MCAW (Multiple Carbohydrate Alignment Weights) tool align multiple structures, aid in understanding their function as binding recognition...
Abstract Glycan microarrays are essential tools in glycobiology and being widely used for assignment of glycan ligands diverse recognition systems. We have developed a new software, called Carbohydrate microArray Analysis Reporting Tool (CarbArrayART), to address the need distributable application microarray data management. The main features CarbArrayART include: (i) Storage quantified array from different layouts with scan array-specific metadata, such as lists arrayed glycans, geometry,...
Abstract Bacteria use protein receptors called lectins to anchor specific host surface sugars. The role of in the vaginal microbiome, and their involvement reproductive tract pathophysiology is poorly defined. Here we establish a classification system based on taxonomy 3D structure identify 109 lectin classes. Hidden Markov Model (HMM) profiles for each class were used search bacterial genomes, resulting prediction >100 000 available at unilectin.eu/bacteria. Genome screening 90 isolates...
