For qualitative researchers, maintaining respondent confidentiality while presenting rich, detailed accounts of social life presents unique challenges. These challenges are not adequately addressed in the literature on research ethics and methods. Using an example from a study breast cancer survivors, I argue that by carefully considering audience for one’s reenvisioning informed consent process, researchers can avoid dilemmas might otherwise lead them to report data.
Abstract Background: Despite current recommendations for women to be screened breast cancer with mammography every 1 2 years, less than half of all newly diagnosed cancers are initially detected through screening mammography. Prompt medical attention a new symptom can result in earlier stage at diagnosis, yet many patients delay seeking care after becoming aware symptom. Methods: In population-based study cancer, we examined factors potentially associated patient health among 436 symptomatic...
Abstract Objectives Seizure burden is typically measured by seizure frequency yet it entails more than counts, especially for people with severe epilepsies and their caregivers. We aimed to characterize the multi‐faceted nature of in young parents who are living early‐life epilepsies. Methods A one‐day workshop a series teleconferences were held children severe, refractory epilepsy origin providers epilepsy. The sessions structured as focus groups identify components impact from perspective...
Sleep disturbance is among the most frequent and distressing symptoms reported by gynecologic cancer survivors. Existing evidence-based behavioral sleep interventions are limited implementation burden, which can decrease adherence. As part of preparation phase multiphase optimization strategy (MOST), this study solicited stakeholder feedback to maximize adherence in a planned sleep/circadian intervention trial. Thirteen post-treatment survivors early-stage completed protocol for trial,...
Research shows that African Americans tend to have poorer and less informative patient-physician communication than Whites. We analyzed survey data from 248 American 244 White cancer patients examine whether this disadvantage could be explained by race variability on several other variables commonly reported affect communication. These were organized into background, enabling, predisposing factors, based the Precede-Proceed Model. Multivariate regressions used test differences in information...
Background Eculizumab has transformed management of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) since its approval. However, biweekly dosing regimen remains a high treatment burden. Ravulizumab administered every 8 weeks demonstrated noninferiority to eculizumab in two phase 3 trials. In regions where PNH options are available, it is important consider patient preference. Objective The aim this study was assess preference for ravulizumab or eculizumab. Methods Study 302s (ALXN1210-PNH-302s)...
Early palliative care referral for patients with advanced cancer has demonstrable benefits but is underutilized. We sought to characterize medical oncologists' perceptions about in their clinical practices. We conducted 4 focus groups a national sample of oncologists elicit perspectives the optimal timing and barriers cancer. used qualitative content analysis uncover themes related early integration into standard oncologic practice.Study participants readily acknowledged evidence supporting...
Abstract Background Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) Therapy is an FDA-approved therapy in the first line and recurrent setting for glioblastoma. Despite Phase 3 evidence showing improved survival with TTFields, it not uniformly utilized. We aimed to examine patient clinician views of TTFields factors shaping utilization through a unique research partnership medical neuro oncology social sciences. Methods Adult glioblastoma patients who were offered at tertiary care academic hospital invited...
Decision aids (DAs) are increasingly used to operationalize shared decision-making (SDM) but their development is not often described. Decisions about oral anticoagulants (OACs) for atrial fibrillation (AF) involve a trade-off between lowering stroke risk and increasing OAC-associated bleeding risk, consideration of how treatment affects lifestyle. The benefits risks OACs hinge upon patient's factors they value these outcomes. We present the DA AF that estimates patients' assesses...
Objectives: To examine the reliability and validity of Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B) Version 4.Methods: Women ≥ 40 years with DCIS or early invasive breast cancer treated whole irradiation (n=280) completed patient-reported outcome measures at three time points. Results: Most internal consistency coefficients were 0.70 greater. At baseline 6 months, mean FACT-B scores comparable between physician-reported cosmetic subgroups; 12 most higher (better) for "excellent"...
Abstract: Poor medication adherence is associated with reduced drug effectiveness, poor health-related quality of life, increased morbidity and mortality, healthcare utilization cost. Including the patient's voice essential in understanding barriers to adherence. Useful patient-reported measures are brief, inexpensive, non-invasive; can indicate adherence; be incorporated electronic health records. The NIH Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS ® ) includes...
BACKGROUNDAlthough oxaliplatin is widely established as a standard treatment in colorectal cancer (CRC), oxaliplatin-induced neuropathy has emerged prominent doselimiting side effect associated with quality of life decrements.Ongoing monitoring and management important for CRC patient adherence to treatment. Therefore, validated self-reported measure would aid the assessment oxaliplatininduced clinical practice research. We sought evaluate content validity 13-item Functional Assessment Cancer...
