A novel prothrombin activator enzyme, which we have named ‘berythractivase’, was isolated from Bothrops erythromelas (jararaca-da-seca) snake venom. Berythractivase purified by a single cation-exchange-chromatography step on Resource S (Amersham Biosciences) column. The overall purification (31-fold) indicates that berythractivase comprises about 5% of the crude It is single-chain protein with molecular mass 78kDa. SDS/PAGE after activation showed fragment patterns similar to those generated...

A novel lectin was isolated from Bothrops leucurus snake venom using a combination of affinity and gel filtration chromatographies. The (BlL) agglutinated glutaraldehyde-treated rabbit human erythrocytes with preference for erythrocytes. Galactose, raffinose, lactose, fetal bovine serum casein inhibited lectin-induced erythrocyte agglutination. BlL, molecular mass 30 kDa composed two subunits 15 kDa, showed dependence on calcium. BlL is an acidic protein highest activity over the pH range...

Neoplastic transformation is the abnormal proliferation of cells. These transformations are often related to changes in cell surface glycoconjugates which can be detected by lectins. We evaluated anti-tumor potential BlL, a galactoside-binding lectin isolated from Bothrops leucurus venom as well its cytotoxicity and hemolysis activity. The phosphatidylserine externalization mitochondrial membrane were also determined. BlL exhibited cytotoxic activity against all tumor lines tested induced...

Since one of the priorities public policies and conservation projects is biodiversity safeguarding, understanding richness distribution amphibian communities becomes an important tool for defining priority areas conservation. Herein, we provide a list amphibians registered in Estação Ecológica de Murici, state Alagoas, Brazil, highest Atlantic Forest. We used data collected over two years field expeditions together with more than 30 information available herpetological collections. A total...

Brazil has a great diversity of snakes, but there are few published works concerning parasitism in these animals. The present paper examined pulmonary infection by pentastomids large snakes from northeasternBrazil, including six specimens Boa constrictor and two examples Lachesis muta the Serpentarium Federal University Pernam- buco (UFPE), Brazil, all which were collected Atlantic Coastal Forest. One specimen B. was infected Porocephalus sp. (intensity 5.0) one L. P. stilesi 15.0).

Bothrops erythromelas is responsible for many snake bites in northeastern Brazil. In the present study we determined vivo distribution of venom following its subcutaneous injection into mice. B. and albumin were labeled individually with 131I by chloramine T method, separated a Sephacryl® S-200 column. The efficiency labeling was 68%. Male Swiss mice (40-45 g), which had been provided drinking water containing 0.05% KI over period 10 days prior to experiment, inoculated dorsally (sc) 0.3 ml...
