Synchrotron-radiation computed tomography has been applied in many research fields. Here, PITRE (Phase-sensitive X-ray Image processing and Tomography REconstruction) PITRE_BM (PITRE Batch Manager) are presented. supports phase retrieval for propagation-based phase-contrast imaging/tomography (PPCI/PPCT), extracts apparent absorption, refractive scattering information of diffraction enhanced imaging (DEI), allows parallel-beam reconstruction conventional absorption CT data PPCT retrieved...
To prospectively evaluate the diagnostic contribution of mammography with synchrotron radiation in patients questionable or suspicious breast abnormalities identified at combined digital (DM) and ultrasonography (US).The ethics committee approved this prospective study, written informed consent was obtained from all patients. Mammography performed a phase-detection technique laboratory. Forty-nine women who met least one inclusion criteria (palpable mass, focal asymmetry, architectural...
When considering the acquisition of experimental synchrotron radiation (SR) X-ray CT data, reconstruction workflow cannot be limited to essential computational steps flat fielding and filtered back projection (FBP). More refined image processing is often required, usually compensate artifacts enhance quality reconstructed images. In principle, it would desirable optimize at facility during experiment (beamtime). However, several practical factors affect part users are likely conclude...
X-ray computed tomography (CT) experiments performed at synchrotron radiation facilities require adequate computing and storage resources due to the large amount of acquired reconstructed data produced. To satisfy heterogeneous needs beamline users, flexible solutions are also required. Moreover, growing demand quantitative image analysis impose an easy integration between CT reconstruction process subsequent feature extraction step. This paper presents some software adopted by SYRMEP...
At the SYnchrotron Radiation for MEdical Physics (SYRMEP) beamline of Elettra Synchrotron Light Laboratory in Trieste (Italy), an extensive research program bio‐medical imaging has been developed since 1997. The core carried out by SYRMEP collaboration concerns use (SR) clinical mammography with aim improving diagnostic performance conventional technique. first protocol patients, started 2006 completed at end 2009 and data analysis is now progress.
The description of a Neanderthal hyoid from Kebara Cave (Israel) in 1989 fuelled scientific debate on the evolution speech and complex language. Gross anatomy 2 differs little that modern humans. However, whether Homo neanderthalensis could use or language remains controversial. Similarity overall shape does not necessarily demonstrate was used same way as sapiens. mechanical performance whole bones is partly controlled by internal trabecular geometries, regulated bone-remodelling response...
X-ray computed microtomography is an excellent tool for the three-dimensional analysis of rock microstructure. Digital images are acquired, visualized, and processed to identify measure several discrete features constituents samples, by means mathematical algorithms computational methods.
Evidence of prehistoric dentistry has been limited to a few cases, the most ancient dating back Neolithic. Here we report 6500-year-old human mandible from Slovenia whose left canine crown bears traces filling with beeswax. The use different analytical techniques, including synchrotron radiation computed micro-tomography (micro-CT), Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating, Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), shown that exposed area dentine...
Organic materials have been mainly proposed as ionizing radiation detectors in the indirect conversion approach. The first thin and bendable X-ray direct are realized (directly converting X-photons into an electric signal) based on organic semiconducting single crystals that possess enhanced sensitivity, low operating voltage (≈5 V), a minimum detectable dose rate of 50 μGy s−1. As service to our authors readers, this journal provides supporting information supplied by authors. Such peer...
The aim of the SYRMA-CT collaboration is to set-up first clinical trial phase-contrast breast CT with synchrotron radiation (SR). In order combine high image quality and low delivered dose a number innovative elements are merged: CdTe single photon counting detector, state-of-the-art reconstruction phase retrieval algorithms. To facilitate an accurate exam optimization, Monte Carlo model was developed for calculation using GEANT4. this study, isotropic spatial resolution (120 μm)3 scans...
The goal of the DIRAC experiment at CERN (PS212) is to measure $\pi^+\pi^-$ atom lifetime with 10% precision. Such a measurement would yield precision 5% on value $S$-wave $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths combination $|a_0-a_2|$. Based part collected data we present first result lifetime, $\tau=[2.91 ^{+0.49}_{-0.62}]\times 10^{-15}$ s, and discuss major systematic errors. This corresponds $|a_0-a_2|=0.264 ^{+0.033}_{-0.020} m_{\pi}^{-1}$.
The measurement of the linear attenuation coefficients breast tissues is fundamental importance in field x-ray diagnostic imaging. Different groups have evaluated by carrying out direct measurements which specimens were thin and selected as homogeneous possible. Here, we use monochromatic high-intensity synchrotron radiation computed tomography (SR CT) to evaluate surgical energy range from 15 26.5 keV. X-ray detection performed a custom digital silicon micro-strip device, developed...
The aim of this study was to optimise the experimental protocol and data analysis for in-vivo breast cancer x-ray imaging. Results are presented experiment at SYRMEP beamline Elettra Synchrotron using propagation-based phase-contrast mammographic tomography method, which incorporates not only absorption, but also phase information. In images tissue samples, a size corresponding full human breast, with radiologically acceptable doses were obtained, degree improvement image quality (from...
Breast computed tomography (BCT) is an emerging application of X-ray in radiological practice. A few clinical prototypes are under evaluation hospitals and new systems development aiming at improving spatial contrast resolution reducing delivered dose. At the same time, synchrotron-radiation phase-contrast mammography has been demonstrated to offer substantial advantages when compared with conventional mammography. Elettra, Italian synchrotron radiation facility, a program BCT based on...
ABSTRACT: Phase-sensitive X-ray microtomography was used as a nondestructive imaging technique for the computerized reconstruction of three-dimensional (3D) images bread crumb microstructure. After image acquisition, numerical algorithms were slice reconstruction. Successively, 3D rendered and quantitatively analyzed. Stereological analyses performed to determine void volume fraction some directionally dependent parameters, such cell wall number, thickness, spacing, specific surface....
X-ray computed microtomography is an interesting imaging technique for many applications, and also very promising in the field of coordinate metrology at micro scale. The main advantage with respect to traditional tactile-probing or optical measurement systems that x-ray tomography can acquire dimensional geometrical data both inner outer surfaces, without accessibility restrictions. However, there are no accepted test procedures available so far uncertainty unknown cases, due complex...
Archaeological evidence for wind musical instruments made by modern humans has been well established from the Upper Palaeolithic in Europe. Musical evidently Neanderthals have not found so far. The most controversial object is a juvenile cave bear femur with two complete holes, 1995 Middle layers of Cave Divje babe I, Slovenia. bone was interpreted as possible Neanderthal ‘flute’, but some scholars firmly rejected this hypothesis on basis taphonomic observations, suggesting carnivore origin...
X-ray phase contrast imaging (XPCi) methods are sensitive to in addition attenuation effects and, therefore, can achieve improved image for weakly attenuating materials, such as often encountered biomedical applications.Several XPCi exist, most of which have already been implemented computed tomographic (CT) modality, thus allowing volumetric imaging. The Edge Illumination (EI) method had, until now, not a CT modality. This article provides indications that quantitative 3D maps an object's and...
