Ria de Aveiro (Portugal) is a shallow coastal lagoon of high economic and ecological importance. Hardly any data on its chemical pollution by polar organic pollutants are available in literature. This study focused the presence sources series phenolic endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) this area, including parabens, alkylphenolic bisphenol-A (BPA). A number possible present large harbours lagoon, city rivers discharging into area. recently constructed submarine wastewater outfall, located...

Mining activities may affect the health of miners and communities living near mining sites, these effects persist even when mine is abandoned. During processes various toxic wastes are produced released into surrounding environment, resulting in contamination air, drinking water, rivers, plants, soils. In a geochemical sampling campaign undertaken Panasqueira Mine area central Portugal, an anomalous distribution several metals arsenic (As) was identified environmental media. Several...

Bisphenol A is a human endocrine disruptor. Its normally low levels in biological fluids make it difficult to detect via conventional techniques. This work demonstrates the complete extraction of bisphenol A, and its possible concentration up 100-fold single-step procedure, using ionic-liquid-based aqueous biphasic systems.

The aim of this work was to study the potential two halophytes for fresh salads. Sarcocornia perennis (SAR) and Salicornia ramosissima (SAL) plant tips were harvested in May July, stored at 4 °C 14 days. At harvest, mineral analyses (Na, K, Mg, Ca, P, N, Fe, Zn, Cu, Pb Cd), chlorophyll content, protein, β-carotene ascorbic acid performed. Color (CIELab), phenolics, antioxidant activity microbial contamination measured harvest after days storage °C, a taste panel evaluated products. SAL had...

The consumption of cytostatics, pharmaceuticals prescribed in chemotherapy, is increasing every year and worldwide, along with the incidence cancer. presence temporal evolution cytostatics wastewaters from a Portuguese hospital center was evaluated through 9-month sampling campaign, comprising total one hundred twenty-nine samples, collected May 2019 to February 2020. Eleven out thirteen were studied, including flutamide, mycophenolate mofetil mycophenolic acid, which have never been...

Obesogens have been identified as a significant factor associated with increasing obesity rates, particularly in developed countries. Substances obesogenic traits are prevalent consumer products, including certain pharmaceuticals. Specific classes of pharmaceuticals recognized for their ability to induce weight gain, often accompanied by hormonal alterations that can adversely impact male fertility. Indeed, research has supplied evidence underscoring the crucial role obesogens and...

Abstract Nassarius reticulatus (whelk) imposex levels and organotin body burden (b.b.) were surveyed along the Portuguese coast, from Vila Praia de Âncora (northern limit) to Lagos (southern limit), between May August 2003. The percentage of females affected with (%I), relative penis length index (RPLI), vas deferens sequence (VDSI) degree female oviduct convolution (AOS) used assess level at each site. These indices determined for 23 sampling stations throughout coast in range 0.0–100%,...

Abstract Capecitabine (CAP, prodrug) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU, its active metabolite) are two of the most prominent cytostatics, for which no clear picture can be drawn regarding potential concentrations effect freshwater biota, with CAP being grouped in least studied cytostatic, whereas 5-FU has been classified as high environmental risk. Accordingly, present work aimed to assess ecotoxicity three species, included a 72-h assay producer Raphidocelis subcapitata ; 96-h invertebrate secondary...
