We describe the effects of four recessive homeotic mutations that specifically disrupt development flowers in Arabidopsis thaliana. Each affects outcome organ development, but not location primordia. Homeotic transformations observed are as follows. In agamous-1, stamens to petals; apetala2-1, sepals leaves and petals staminoid apetala3-1, carpels; pistillata-1, sepals. addition, two these (ap2-1 pi-1) result loss organs, ag-1 causes cells would ordinarily form gynoecium differentiate a...

ABSTRACT We describe allelic series for three loci, mutations in which result homeotic conversions two adjacent whorls the Arabidopsis thaliana flower. Both structure of mature flower and its development from initial primordium are described by scanning electron microscopy. New at APETALA2 locus, ap2-2, ap2-8 ap2-9, cause outer whorls: sepals to carpels (or leaves) petals stamens. Two new PISTILLATA, pi-2 pi-3, second third whorl organs differentiate incorrectly. The evolution of land flora transformed the terrestrial environment. Land plants evolved from an ancestral charophycean alga which they inherited developmental, biochemical, and cell biological attributes. Additional biochemical physiological adaptations to land, a life cycle with alternation between multicellular haploid diploid generations that facilitated efficient dispersal desiccation tolerant spores, in plant. Vascular plants appeared ~410 million years ago, then diverged into several lineages of which only two survive: the euphyllophytes (ferns and seed plants) lycophytes. We report here genome sequence lycophyte Selaginella moellendorffii (Selaginella), first nonseed vascular plant reported. By comparing gene content in evolutionarily diverse taxa, we found that transition from a gametophyte- to sporophyte-dominated life cycle required far fewer new genes than flowering plant, whereas secondary...

ABSTRACT Lateral organs produced by shoot apical and flower meristems exhibit a fundamental abaxial-adaxial asymmetry. We describe three members of the YABBY gene family, FILAMENTOUS FLOWER, YABBY2 YABBY3, isolated on basis homology to CRABS CLAW. Each these genes is expressed in polar manner all lateral organ primordia from meristems. The expression precisely correlated with abaxial cell fate mutants which fates are found ectopically, reduced or eliminated. Ectopic either FLOWER YABBY3...

Asymmetric development of plant lateral organs is initiated by a partitioning organ primordia into distinct domains along their adaxial/abaxial axis. Two primary determinants abaxial cell fate are members the KANADI and YABBY gene families. In temperate and boreal ecosystems, seasonal cycles of growth dormancy allow perennial plants to adapt winter conditions. We show, in hybrid aspen trees, that photoperiodic regulation is mechanistically distinct from autumnal cessation. Dormancy sets when symplastic intercellular communication through plasmodesmata blocked by a process dependent on the phytohormone abscisic acid. The blockage prevents growth-promoting signals accessing meristem. Thus, precocious disallowed during dormancy....
