Life's Simple 7 (LS7) is an easily calculated and interpreted metric of cardiovascular health based on domains: smoking, diet, physical activity, body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol, fasting glucose. The Essential 8 (LE8) was subsequently introduced, adding sleep metrics revisions the previous domains. Although calculating LE8 requires additional information, we hypothesized that it would be a more reliable index health.

Abstract Background The association of hypertension (HTN) severity and control with the risk incident atrial fibrillation (AF) is unclear. Hypothesis Increased HTN poorer blood pressure would be associated an increased AF. Methods This analysis included 9485 participants (mean age 63 ± 8 years; 56% women; 35% Black). Participants were stratified into six mutually exclusive groups at baseline— normotension ( n = 1629 ), prehypertension 704 controlled 2224 uncontrolled 4123 apparent...

Abstract Background Enteral nutritional support is used in care for patients with head and neck cancer. This study describes the frequency timing of gastrostomy tube placement corresponding Medicare claims Methods Surveillance, Epidemiology, End Results (SEER)–Medicare data cancer diagnosed from 2000 to 2005 were this descriptive ( N = 16,458). In all, 35.1% undergoing treatment had tubes placed; 16.9% placed before treatment, whereas 83.1% them after treatment. Of those having prior 23.7%...

Background Atrial fibrillation is associated with increased stroke risk; available risk prediction tools have modest accuracy. We hypothesized that circulating biomarkers may improve in atrial fibrillation. Methods and Results The REGARDS (Reasons for Geographic Racial Differences Stroke) study a prospective cohort of 30 239 Black White adults age ≥45 years. A nested cases random sample the included 175 participants (63% women, 37% adults) baseline blood biomarker data. There were 81...
