We report a case of Usutu virus (USUV)-related illness in patient that underwent an orthotropic liver transplant (OLT). Post transplant, the developed clinical signs possible neuroinvasive disease with significant loss cerebral functions. USUV was isolated Vero E6 cells from plasma sample obtained immediately before surgery, and RNA demonstrated by RT-PCR sequencing. This enlarges panel emerging mosquito-borne flavivirus-related humans.
Abstract Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) has been detected sporadically in Italy since the 1990s. We report phylogenetic relationship of swine enteric coronaviruses collected during 2007–2014 and identify a drastic shift PEDV strain variability new coronavirus generated by recombination transmissible gastroenteritis PEDV.
Background In recent years human diseases due to mosquito-borne viruses were increasingly reported in Emilia-Romagna region (Italy), from the chikungunya virus 2007 West Nile (WNV) 2008. An extensive entomological survey was performed 2009 establish presence and distribution of mosquito arboviruses this region, with particular reference flaviviruses. Methodology/Principal Findings From May 6 October 31, a total 190,516 mosquitoes sampled georeferenced stations, grouped 1,789 pools according...
Post-weaning diarrhoea (PWD), due to Escherichia coli, is an important cause of economic losses the pig industry primarily as a result mortality and worsened productive performance. In spite its relevance, recent data about prevalence virulence genes pathotypes among E. coli isolates recovered from cases PWD in Europe are scarce. This study investigates fimbrial toxin by PCR 280 farms with across Europe. A total 873 samples collected within first 48 h after onset (occurring 7-21 days post...
Background In 2008, after the first West Nile virus (WNV) detection in Emilia-Romagna region, a surveillance system, including mosquito- and bird-based surveillance, was established to evaluate presence. Surveillance improved following years by extending monitoring larger areas increasing numbers of mosquitoes birds tested. Methodology/Principal Findings A network mosquito traps, evenly distributed regularly activated, set up within surveyed area. total 438,558 mosquitoes, grouped 3,111...
The current study is based on the AFM1 contamination of milk, determined from April 2013 to December 2018 in framework a self-control plan 6 milk processing plants Italy. These data – together with consumption consumers were evaluated and used for calculation Estimated Daily Intake (EDI), Hazard Index (HI) fraction hepatocarcinoma cases (HCC) due exposure different population groups. Altogether total 31,702 samples analyzed, representing 556,413 tons which an outstanding amount compared...
Following a large West Nile virus (WNV) epidemic in northeastern Italy 2008, human and animal surveillance activities were implemented Emilia Romagna. Human was performed by serology or genome detection on blood cerebrospinal fluid for all suspected cases suffering from acute meningoencephalitis the regional territory. Animal consisted of passive active horses wild birds mosquitoes. Between 15 June 31 October 2009, nine 78 possible neuroinvasive disease confirmed (three fatal). From May to...
The genus Flavivirus, family Flaviviridae, includes a number of important arthropod-transmitted human pathogens such as dengue viruses, West Nile virus, Japanese encephalitis virus and yellow fever virus. In addition, the flaviviruses without known vertebrate reservoir, which have been detected only in insects, particularly mosquitoes, cell fusing agent Kamiti River Culex flavivirus, Aedes Quang Binh Nakiwogo Calbertado Reports detection these viruses with no recognized pathogenic role...
We recently described the genetic antimicrobial resistance and virulence profile of a collection 279 commensal E. coli food-producing animal (FPA), pet, wildlife human origin. Phenotypic (AMR) role as reservoir extra-intestinal pathogenic Escherichia (ExPEC) virulence-associated genes (VAGs) or potential ExPEC pathogens were evaluated. The most common phenotypic was to tetracycline (76/279, 27.24%), sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (73/279, 26.16%), streptomycin sulfisoxazole (71/279, 25.45%...
Usutu virus (USUV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus belonging to the Japanese encephalitis serocomplex, recently related neurological disease in immunosuppressed patients. In same area of Northern Italy where USUV human cases occurred 2009, regional West Nile (WNV) surveillance program based on mosquito monitoring and wild birds screening has been implemented since 2008. Mosquito pools were tested using three different polymerase chain reactions (Flavivirus, WNV, USUV). During summer 56 (54...
Recently, Italy-particularly the Emilia-Romagna region-was location of consecutive outbreaks human diseases caused by arboviruses chikungunya virus and West Nile virus. The two outbreaks, spread different species mosquitoes, were not related, but pointed out lack an arboviral surveillance program in this region. Beginning 2007 entomological was initiated region, 2008 improved extended at Lombardia Using CO(2)-baited traps, 65,292 mosquitoes collected; pooled date collection, location,...
Background The circulation of West Nile virus and Usutu was detected in the Emilia-Romagna region 2008 2009. To evaluate extent both viruses, environmental surveillance, based on bird mosquito testing, conducted gradually improved over years. Methods In February–March 2009–2011, 5,993 hibernating mosquitoes were manually sampled, out which 80.1% Culex pipiens; none tested positive for viruses. From to 2011, 946,213 mosquitoes, sampled between May October, tested; 86.5% Cx. pipiens. 32...
West Nile virus (WNV) is a recently re-emerged health problem in Europe. In Italy, an increasing number of outbreaks disease, with occurrences human cases, have been reported since 2008. This particularly true northern where entomological surveillance systems implemented at regional level. The aim this study was to use, for the first time, all data collected five regions undergoing WNV Italy characterize viral circulation (at spatial and temporal scale), identify potential mosquito vectors,...
Abstract The treatment of municipal wastewater produces clean water and sewage sludge (MSS), the management which has become a serious problem in Europe. typical destination MSS is to spread it on land, but presence heavy metals pollutants raises environmental health concerns. Bioconversion mediated by larvae black soldier fly (BSFL) Hermetia illucens (Diptera, Stratiomyidae: Hermetiinae) may be strategy for managing MSS. process adds value generating contain proteins lipids that are...
To compare the real-time reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assays used for diagnosis of Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), a Europe-wide interlaboratory ring trial was conducted. A variety PRRSV strains including North American (NA) European (EU) genotype isolates were analyzed by participants. Great differences regarding qualitative diagnostics as well analytical sensitivity observed between individual RT-qPCR systems,...
To predict the risk of incursion Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) in livestock Europe introduced through immature Hyalomma marginatum ticks on migratory birds under current conditions and decade 2075-2084 a climate-change scenario.A spatial map comprising 14 282 grid cells (25 × 25 km) was constructed using three data sources: (i) ranges abundances four species bird which migrate from sub-Saharan Africa to each spring, namely Willow warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus), Northern...
