阿寒湖チュウルイ湾に生息するマリモは，回転運動しながら光合成することによって，球状の集合体を形成している．成長した球状のマリモは世界でも阿寒湖でしか確認することができないことから，わが国では特別天然記念物に指定されている．マリモを回転させる外力として，風波が関係しており，阿寒湖上に適度な南風が発生すると，マリモが回転し始めることが分かっている．しかし，地球規模での環境変動の影響により，将来の風のパターンが変化し，マリモの回転運動に影響を及ぼす可能性がある．そこで本研究では，波高計と風向・風速計を設置し，風波と風の特性の把握を行った．その後，全球気候モデルを用いて将来の風のパターンを予測した．その結果，マリモの球状化に影響がある強い南風の発生頻度が将来気候において増加することが確認できた．

本研究は, オホーツク海南域における流氷量と波浪発生の要因である風に着目し，オホーツク海沿岸の波浪と流氷との関係を明らかにするため，氷量と有義波高及び風速に関し観測データの解析を行った．解析対象波浪は，オホーツク海沿岸に影響を及ぼす波向を北～東と考え，波向に対応する風が6時間以上連続して発生した際の有義波高とし，風速と有義波高の比率とその時の流氷量の関係から，流氷が有義波高に及ぼす影響を解析した．その結果，風速と有義波高の比率は流氷量が多いほど小さくなっており，特にオホーツク沿岸域に近い領域における流氷体積の増大が，有義波高の減少に最も寄与していることが分かった．これにより，今後の波浪と流氷の検討には, 可能であれば流氷体積を利用すべきであることが示された．
