To characterize type 2 diabetes (T2D)-associated variation across the allele frequency spectrum, we conducted a meta-analysis of genome-wide association data from 26,676 T2D case and 132,532 control subjects European ancestry after imputation using 1000 Genomes multiethnic reference panel. Promising signals were followed up in additional sets (of 14,545 or 7,397 38,994 71,604 subjects). We identified 13 novel T2D-associated loci (P < 5 × 10-8), including variants near GLP2R, GIP, HLA-DQA1...

Recent advances in highly multiplexed immunoassays have allowed systematic large-scale measurement of hundreds plasma proteins large cohort studies. In combination with genotyping, such studies offer the prospect to 1) identify mechanisms involved regulation protein expression plasma, and 2) determine whether are likely be causally implicated disease. We report here results genome-wide association (GWA) 83 considered relevant cardiovascular disease (CVD), measured 3,394 individuals multiple...

Background —Carriers of the apolipoprotein A-I Milano (apoA-I M ) mutant present with very low plasma HDL cholesterol and moderate hypertriglyceridemia, apparently not leading to premature coronary heart disease. The objective this study was establish whether high-risk lipid/lipoprotein profile is associated structural changes in carotid arteries heart, indicative preclinical atherosclerosis. Methods Results —Twenty-one carriers were compared age- sex-matched control subjects from same...

Background and Purpose —The intima-media thickness (IMT) of extracranial carotid arteries determined by B-mode ultrasound is a measurable index the presence atherosclerosis. The ultrasonographic scan protocol reading techniques used until now to measure IMT are, however, time consuming require participation specialized research centers. In this study we present cross-sectional 963 patients attending Enrica Grossi Paoletti Center in Milan, Italy, with aim assessing whether measurements artery...

AimsAlthough well supported by postmortem studies, the reliability of carotid atherosclerosis as surrogate marker coronary has been put in doubt vivo studies showing a poor correlation between intima-media thickness (IMT) detected external ultrasound (ECU) and stenosis assessed quantitative angiography (QCA). In present study, we have investigated whether stronger two arteries can be obtained using homogeneous variables such IMT, ECU intravascular (IVUS), respectively.

Aims Measurement of change in carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) has been proposed as an alternative for the occurrence cardiovascular (CV) events assessment therapeutic interventions. Nevertheless, criticism voiced based on observations indicating a weak relation between CIMT and coronary atherosclerosis well virtual absence data showing that progression indeed predicts artery disease (CAD) stroke. Methods results We set out to review evidence these issues by performing literature search...

Background: The lack of specific vaccines or drugs against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) warrants studies focusing on alternative clinical approaches to reduce the spread this pandemic disease. In study, we investigated whether anti-influenza vaccination plays a role in minimizing diffusion COVID-19 Italian population aged 65 and over. Methods: Four outcomes were used: severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2) seroprevalence, hospitalizations for symptoms, admissions intensive...

The 'IMPROVE study' was designed to investigate whether cross-sectional carotid artery intima–media thickness (IMT) and overall IMT progression are predictors of new vascular events in European individuals at high risk cardiovascular diseases. This paper reports the results baseline analyses aimed identifying major determinants increased (C-IMT). IMPROVE is a prospective, multicentre, longitudinal, observational study. A total 3711 subjects (age range 54–79 years) with least three factors...
