This article describes updates of the meta-analysis command metan and options that have been added since command's original publication (Bradburn, Deeks, Altman, – an alternative command, Stata Technical Bulletin Reprints, vol. 8, pp. 86–100). These include version 9 graphics with flexible display options, ability to meta-analyze precalculated effect estimates, analyze subgroups by using by() option. Changes output, saved variables, results are also described.

For rare outcomes, meta-analysis of randomized trials may be the only way to obtain reliable evidence effects healthcare interventions. However, many methods are based on large sample approximations, and unsuitable when events rare. Through simulation, we evaluated performance 12 for pooling events, considering estimability, bias, coverage statistical power. Simulations were data sets from three case studies with between five 19 trials, using baseline event rates 0.1 10 per cent risk ratios...

Background Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a relatively common form of primary systemic vasculitis, which, if left untreated, can lead to permanent sight loss. We compared ultrasound as an alternative diagnostic test with temporal artery biopsy, which may be negative in 9–61% true cases. Objective To compare the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness biopsy diagnosing patients suspected GCA. Design Prospective multicentre cohort study. Setting Secondary care.
