(Abridged) We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in optical, Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). A vast array of science will be enabled by a single wide-deep-fast sky survey, and LSST have unique capability faint time domain. The design is driven four main themes: probing dark energy matter, taking an inventory Solar System, exploring transient optical sky, mapping Milky Way. wide-field ground-based system sited at Cerro Pach\'{o}n northern Chile. telescope 8.4 m...
The all-sky monitor on the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer has been monitoring sky in 1.5-12 keV band since late February. instrument consists of three coded-aperture cameras that can be rotated to view different regions by a motorized drive assembly. Intensities ~100 known sources are obtained via least-squares fits shadow patterns data and compiled form X-ray light curves. Six orbital periodicities four long-term periodicities, all previously known, have detected these Searches for additional...
We report the results of first-epoch observation with ACIS-I instrument on Chandra X-Ray Observatory Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), compact radio source associated supermassive black hole (SMBH) at dynamical center Milky Way. This produced first X-ray (0.5-7 keV) spectroscopic image arcsecond resolution central 17′ × (40 pc 40 pc) Galaxy. discovery an source, CXOGC J174540.0-290027, coincident Sgr within 0.″27 ± 0.″18. We discuss the observational consequences of black hole spin in X-ray binaries within framework standard thin accretion disk model. When compared with theoretical flux distribution from surface a surrounding Kerr hole, observed properties Galactic superluminal jet sources, GRO J1655-40 and GRS 1915+105, strongly suggest that each contains spinning rapidly same direction as disk. show, however, some other an ultrasoft component probably harbor only non- or slowly holes, we argue those no...
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 12-week intervention combining electroacupuncture (EA) with conventional cognitive rehabilitation (CR) on recovery and brain network topological properties in stroke patients. Thirty-four post-stroke impairment (PSCI) patients were randomly assigned either an EA + CR group or CR-only group, both undergoing five weekly interventions for 12 weeks. Cognitive assessments Diffusion Tensor Imaging tests performed pre- post-intervention. Primary...
A high spectral resolution observation of the diffuse X-ray background in 60-1000 eV energy range has been made using an array 36 1 mm2 microcalorimeters flown on a sounding rocket. Detector ranged from 5 to 12 FWHM, and composite spectrum ~1 sr centered at l = 90°, b +60° was obtained with net ~9 eV. The target area includes bright keV regions but avoids Loop I North Polar Spur. Lines C VI, O VII, VIII are clearly detected intensities 5.4 ± 2.3, 4.8 0.8, 1.6 0.4 photons cm-2 s-1 sr-1,...
We show that the model proposed by Esin, McClintock, & Narayan for low state, intermediate and high state of black hole soft X-ray transient, Nova Muscae 1991, is consistent with spectral evolution binary, Cyg X-1, during hard-to-soft transition observed in 1996. also apply to outbursts two other transients, GRO J0422+32 J1719-24.
The accretion of matter onto a massive black hole is believed to feed the relativistic plasma jets found in many active galactic nuclei (AGN). Although some AGN accelerate particles energies exceeding 10^12 electron Volts (eV) and are bright sources very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission, it not yet known where VHE emission originates. Here we report on radio observations galaxy M87, revealing period extremely strong flares accompanied by increase flux from its nucleus. These results...
We report results from an intensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign on the TeV blazar Mrk 421 over period of 2003-2004. The source was observed simultaneously at energies with Whipple 10 m telescope and X-ray Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) during each clear night within observing windows. Supporting observations were also frequently carried out optical radio wavelengths to provide simultaneous or contemporaneous coverages. large amount data has allowed us examine variability in...
This detection constrains the mechanism and emission region of gamma-ray radiation in pulsar’s magnetosphere.
We present a detailed analysis of week-long simultaneous observations the blazar Mrk 421 at 2-60 keV X-rays (RXTE) and TeV γ-rays (Whipple HEGRA) in 2001. Accompanying optical monitoring was performed with Mt. Hopkins 48 inch telescope. The unprecedented quality this data set enables us to establish existence correlation between X-ray luminosities, also start unveiling some its characteristics, particular energy dependence time variability. source shows strong variations both γ-ray bands,...
We report the discovery of TeV gamma-ray emission from Type Ia supernova remnant (SNR) G120.1+1.4, known as Tycho's remnant. Observations performed in period 2008-2010 with VERITAS ground-based observatory reveal weak coming direction remnant, compatible a point source located at $00^{\rm h} \ 25^{\rm m} 27.0^{\rm s},\ +64^{\circ} 10^{\prime} 50^{\prime\prime}$ (J2000). The photon spectrum measured by can be described power-law $dN/dE = C(E/3.42\;\textrm{TeV})^{-\Gamma}$ $\Gamma 1.95 \pm...
LS I +61 303 is one of only a few high-mass X-ray binaries currently detected at high significance in very energy gamma-rays. The system was observed over several orbital cycles (between September 2006 and February 2007) with the VERITAS array imaging air-Cherenkov telescopes. A signal gamma-rays energies above 300 GeV found statistical 8.4 standard deviations. flux measured to be strongly variable; maximum during most apastron. spectrum for period emission can characterized by power law...
We report on TeV γ-ray observations of the blazar Mrk 421 (redshift 0.031) with VERITAS observatory and Whipple 10 m Cherenkov telescope. The excellent sensitivity allowed us to sample fluxes energy spectra unprecedented accuracy where was detected in each pointings. A total 47.3 hr 96 data were acquired between 2006 January 2008 June. present results a study as function time for different flux levels. We present evidence that the very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission coincident with supernova remnant IC 443 is extended. contains one of best studied sites remnant/molecular cloud interaction and pulsar wind nebula CXOU J061705.3+222127, both which are important targets for VHE observations. VERITAS observed 37.9 hr during 2007 detected above 300 GeV an excess 247 events, resulting in a significance 8.3 standard deviations (σ) before trials 7.5σ after point-source search....
We present coordinated multiwavelength observations of the bright, nearby BL Lac object Mrk 421 taken in 2013 January-March, involving GASP-WEBT, Swift, NuSTAR, Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, VERITAS, and other collaborations instruments, providing data from radio to very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray bands. NuSTAR yielded previously unattainable sensitivity 3-79 keV range, revealing that spectrum softens when source is dimmer until X-ray spectral shape saturates into a steep power law with photon index...
