The expansion of modern human populations in Africa 80,000 to 60,000 years ago and their initial exodus out have been tentatively linked two phases technological behavioral innovation within the Middle Stone Age southern Africa-the Still Bay Howieson's Poort industries-that are associated with early evidence for symbols personal ornaments. Establishing correct sequence events, however, has hampered by inadequate chronologies. We report ages nine sites from varied climatic ecological zones...

Abstract Genome-wide association studies have uncovered thousands of common variants associated with human disease, but the contribution rare to disease remains relatively unexplored. The UK Biobank contains detailed phenotypic data linked medical records for approximately 500,000 participants, offering an unprecedented opportunity evaluate effect variation on a broad collection traits 1,2 . Here we study relationships between protein-coding and 17,361 binary 1,419 quantitative phenotypes...

Lithic technologies have been used to trace dispersals of early human populations within and beyond Africa. Convergence in lithic systems has the potential confound such interpretations, implying connections between unrelated groups. Due their reductive nature, stone artefacts are unusually prone this chance appearance similar forms populations. Here we present data from South African Middle Stone Age sites Uitpanskraal 7 Mertenhof suggesting that Nubian core reduction associated with Late...

Abstract After more than a century, debate over the explanation of microliths continues. We review debates on three continents (Australia, India and southern Africa), argue that depictions them as purely symbolic items manufactured for public display are implausible. Two different mechanisms dominate recent discussions: 1) exchange symbolically loaded artefacts device constructing cultural connections establishing access to territory/resources, 2) portable standardized tools helped buffer...

Abstract Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a fatal disorder characterised by progressive, destructive lung scarring. Despite substantial progress, the genetic determinants of this disease remain incompletely defined. Using whole genome and exome sequencing data from 752 individuals with sporadic IPF 119,055 UK Biobank controls, we performed variant-level exome-wide association study (ExWAS) gene-level collapsing analyses. Our analysis revealed novel between rare missense variant in...

Abstract The ubiquity and durability of lithic artifacts inform archaeologists about important dimensions human behavioral variability. Despite their importance, can be problematic to study because analysts differ widely in theoretical approaches the data they collect. extent which differences relate prehistoric variability or between today remains incompletely known. We address this issue with most extensive replicability yet, involving 11 analysts, 100 unmodified flakes, 38 ratio,...

We study whether Amazon engages in self-preferencing on its marketplace by favoring own brands (e.g., Basics) search. To address this question, we collect new micro-level consumer search data using a custom browser extension installed panel of participants. Using methodology, observe positions, behavior, and product characteristics. find that Amazon-branded products are indeed ranked higher than observably similar results. The prominence given to is 30 percent 60 the granted sponsored products.

Boomplaas Cave, South Africa, contains a rich archaeological record, with evidence of human occupation from >66,000 years ago until the protohistoric period. Notwithstanding long history research at site, its existing chronology can benefit revision. Many site's members are currently delimited by only single conventional radiocarbon date and some dates were measured on materials now known to be unsuitable for dating. Here we present results an ongoing effort redate key late/terminal...
