Neuronal apoptosis is a suspected cause of neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Increased levels amyloid β peptide (Aβ) induce neuronal vitro and vivo . The underlying molecular mechanism Aβ neurotoxicity not clear. normal concentration cerebrospinal fluid 4 n m We treated human neuron primary cultures with 100 peptides 1–40 1–42 the control reverse 40–1 find that although little induced by either after 3 d treatment, provokes rapid sustained downregulation key anti-apoptotic...
The 2009 pandemic H1N1 (H1N1pdm09) influenza virus is naturally susceptible to neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors, but mutations in the NA protein can cause oseltamivir resistance. H275Y and I223V amino acid substitutions of H1N1pdm09 strain have been separately observed patients exhibiting oseltamivir-resistance. Here, we apply mathematical modelling techniques compare fitness wild-type relative each these two mutants. We find that both background significantly lengthen duration eclipse phase...
We present a hybrid atomic sensor that realizes radio-frequency electric field detection with intrinsic amplification and polarization selectivity for robust high-sensitivity measurement. The incorporates passive resonator element integrated an vapor cell provides of incident fields. amplified intra-cavity is measured by atoms using quantum-optical readout AC level shifts field-sensitive Rydberg states. In our experimental demonstration, we employ split field-enhancement embedded in rubidium...
An experimental study on Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in rubidium (Rb) vapor cells containing inert gases at pressures ≤5 Torr is reported. Using an inert-gas-free Rb cell as a reference, we measure frequency shift and line broadening of the EIT spectra with argon, neon, or nitrogen ranging from few mTorr to 5 Torr. The results qualitatively agree pseudo-potential model that includes s-wave scattering between electron inert-gas atoms effect polarization by atoms....
The brain melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) system represents an anabolic involved in energy balance regulation through influences exerted on the homeostatic and nonhomeostatic controls of food intake expenditure. present study was designed to further delineate effect MCH by assessing actions receptor 1 (MCHR1) agonism both expenditure after intracerebroventricular (third ventricle) intra-nucleus-accumbens-shell (intraNAcSH) injections a MCHR1 agonist. Total substrate oxidation were...
Abstract Avian influenza viruses present an emerging epidemiological concern as some strains of H5N1 avian can cause severe infections in humans with lethality rates up to 60%. These have been circulation since 1997 and recently a novel H7N9-subtyped virus has causing epizootics China around 20%. To better understand the replication kinetics these viruses, we combined several extensive viral experiments mathematical modelling vitro human A549 cells. We extracted fundamental parameters...
We investigate and employ optical Rydberg resonances in an atomic vapor cell for measurements of high-intensity VHF-band radio frequency (rf) electric fields. An with integrated electrodes is used to generate 50--500 MHz rf fields reaching $\ensuremath{\sim}5$ kV/m a submillimeter gap. The are measured using electromagnetically induced transparency as readout field-sensitive $30{D}_{J}$ $35{D}_{J}$ states atoms within the field determined by matching observed spectroscopic markers, including...
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are involved in energy expenditure, regulation of inflammatory processes, and cellular protection peripheral tissues. Among the different types PPARs, PPARβ is only one to be widely expressed cortical neurons. Using knockout (KO) mice, we report here a detailed investigation role cerebral ischemic damage, associated antioxidant processes as well food intake after middle artery occlusion (MCAO). The KO mice had two-fold increase infarct size...
We study superfluorescence (SF) from spherical and cigar-shaped clouds of laser-cooled Rubidium atoms the $5{D}_{5/2}$ level through $6{P}_{3/2}$ to $5{S}_{1/2}$ ground level. The atomic system is initially excited state via two-photon excitation intermediate $5{P}_{3/2}$ fluorescence on $6P\text{\ensuremath{-}}5S$ transition at 420 nm recorded using time-resolved measurements. time delays observed SF emission peaks typically scale as $\ensuremath{\sim}{N}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, where $N$ atom...
Fatty acid composition was assessed for 31 pathogenic and nonpathogenic strains phenotypically related to Streptomyces scabies isolated in eastern Canada. The profiles of these consisted 12 17 fatty acids, most which were saturated iso anteiso acids. clustered into two groups within a Euclidian distance 25. Members the first group characterized by predominance their profile 16:0 palmitate. second split subgroups at 12. 15:0 predominant subgroup. Three acids (15:0 iso, anteiso, 16:0), each...
Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is a key enzyme involved in the metabolism of lipoproteins, providing tissues like adipose tissue or skeletal muscle with fatty acids. LPL also expressed brain, fulfilling yet unknown functions. Using neuroblastoma cell line transfected NEO- LPL-expression vector, we have developed model to study function neurons exposed native copper-oxidized lipoproteins. The addition culture media VLDL 10 μm copper sulfate led significant reduction viability NEO transfectants...
Nine streptomycete strains that cause deep-pitted scab of potato were characterized by performing 138 physiological and morphological tests. A numerical analysis revealed the scab-inducing organisms related to belonging cluster 1 Williams et al. (Streptomyces albidoflavus). The levels similarity between Streptomyces scabies acidiscabies low (52 54%, respectively). fatty acid profiles differed considerably from those S. acidiscabies. bacteria predominance in their 15:0 anteiso, iso, 16:0...
Abstract Background Prenatal micronutrient combinations with high iron content are associated rates of gastrointestinal symptoms. This coupled nausea and vomiting pregnancy results in women often discontinuing their multivitamins. A new prescription supplement (PregVit ® ) that separates from calcium two tablets – morning evening, has lower elemental (35 mg), but similar extent absorption when compared to another containing (60 mg) (Materna ). The objectives this study were compare...
Rydberg-atom-enabled atomic vapor cell technologies show great potentials in developing devices for quantum enhanced sensors. In this paper, we demonstrate laser induced DC electric fields an all-glass without bulk or thin film electrodes. The spatial field distribution is mapped by Rydberg electromagnetically transparency spectroscopy. We explain the measured with a boundary-value electrostatic model. This work may inspire new ideas control designing miniaturized devices. Limitations and...
Intraperitoneal injection of kainic acid (KA) in C57BL/6J and 129T2SvEmsJ mice led to a transient induction uncoupling protein-2 (Ucp2) mRNA expression several brain regions, which included the CA1 subfield hippocampus, dorsal endopiriform nucleus piriform cortex both strains. In all those levels Ucp2 expression, as determined by situ hybridization, peaked at 24 h returned basal within 72 post-injection. The increase was mainly observed neurons, with microglial cells displaying only...
