Abstract Aging, often considered a result of random cellular damage, can be accurately estimated using DNA methylation profiles, the foundation pan-tissue epigenetic clocks. Here, we demonstrate development universal pan-mammalian clocks, 11,754 arrays from our Mammalian Methylation Consortium, which encompass 59 tissue types across 185 mammalian species. These predictive models estimate age with high accuracy ( r > 0.96). Age deviations correlate human mortality risk, mouse somatotropic...

ABSTRACT Aging is often perceived as a degenerative process resulting from random accrual of cellular damage over time. Despite this, age can be accurately estimated by epigenetic clocks based on DNA methylation profiles almost any tissue the body. Since such pan-tissue have been successfully developed for several different species, we hypothesized that one build pan-mammalian measure in all mammalian species. To address generated data using 11,754 arrays, each profiling up to 36 thousand...

The development of a precise blood or skin tissue DNA Epigenetic Aging Clock for Odontocete (OEAC) would solve current age estimation inaccuracies wild odontocetes. Therefore, we determined genome-wide methylation profiles using custom array (HorvathMammalMethyl40) across and samples (n = 446) from known animals representing nine odontocete species within 4 phylogenetic families to identify associated CG dinucleotides (CpGs). top CpGs were used create cross-validated OEAC clock which was...

Diet-tissue discrimination factors (Δ(15)N or Δ(13)C) and turnover times are thought to be influenced by a wide range of variables including metabolic rate, age, dietary quality, tissue sampled the taxon being investigated. In present study, skin samples were collected from ex situ dolphins that had consumed diets known isotopic composition for minimum 8 weeks. Adult consuming diet low fat (5-6%) high δ(15)N value significantly lower Δ(15)N values than animals with (13.9%) value. Juvenile an...

Morbilliviruses pose a significant threat to marine mammal populations around the world and have been associated with multiple epizootics in pinnipeds cetaceans. As part of preventive veterinary medical program, five harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) managed collection were vaccinated recombinant canarypox-vectored canine distemper virus vaccine. The vaccine was evaluated for safety (by monitoring local systemic adverse effects by testing shedding canarypox vector) efficacy serum neutralizing...

Abstract Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a direct measurement of renal function. Although clearance tests using 24‐h urine collection or blood sample series are gold standards for measuring GFR, serum‐based prediction GFR based upon the Modification Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) Study equation acceptable routine use human adults. The purpose our study was to assess ability modified MDRD predict expected changes bottlenose dolphins ( Tursiops truncatus ) healthy dolphin population...

A 22-yr-old multiparous beluga, Delphinapterus leucas, with consistently elevated serum progesterone concentrations post–artificial insemination was diagnosed viable twins at 149 days postconception. Twins were of similar size least until day 264, the last point when ultrasound measurements both made. However, used to determine viability fetuses on 365, 393, and 400. After 90% normal gestation, or 434 days, steroids administered encourage fetal lung maturation. Seven later a 40.9-kg live...

A female weanling northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) presented to The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, California, USA, poor body condition. An esophageal obstruction was diagnosed by contrast radiography and esophagoscopy, but despite extensive diagnostics supportive care, the died 6 days later. On postmortem examination, right aortic arch persistent, forming a vascular ring anomaly with patent ductus arteriosus that compressed distal esophagus. Aplasia of cribiform plate...

Marine mammals are regularly moved between zoological parks, and transport of stranded, debilitated, wild marine occurs during the work rescue rehabilitation. With careful attention to health, physiology, welfare, use technology appropriate type animal, specialized techniques equipment have been developed provide for special needs mammals, allowing safe, successful transportation. The requirements over years experience; live mammal has documented as far back sixteenth century.
