Abstract During major epidemic outbreaks, demand for healthcare workers (HCWs) grows even as the extreme pressures they face cause declining availability. We draw on Taiwan’s severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) experience to argue that a modified form of traffic control bundling (TCB) protects HCW safety and by extension strengthens overall coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) control.

We argue that enhanced Traffic Control Bundling (eTCB) can interrupt the community-hospital-community transmission cycle, thereby limiting COVID-19's impact. Enhanced TCB is an expansion of traditional proved highly effective during Taiwan's 2003 SARS outbreak. TCB's success derived from ensuring Health Care Workers (HCWs) and patients were protected fomite, contact droplet within hospitals. Although successful SARS, achieving a similar level with COVID-19 outbreak requires adapting to...

One-hundred and thirty confirmed cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) were recruited to evaluate their anti-SARS-coronavirus (CoV) antibody status human leukocyte antigen (HLA) types in September 2006, 3 y after the SARS outbreaks Taiwan. Western blot assay showed that 6.9% participants still had anti-spike anti-nucleocapside antibodies. A case-control study association HLA with revealed HLA-Cw1502 DR0301 alleles conferred resistance against infection (p<0.05).

ABSTRACT Antiviral medications with activity against influenza viruses are important in controlling influenza. We compared intravenous peramivir, a potent neuraminidase inhibitor, oseltamivir patients seasonal virus infection. In multinational, multicenter, double-blind, double-dummy randomized controlled study, aged ≥20 years A or B infection were randomly assigned to receive either single infusion of peramivir (300 600 mg) oral administration (75 mg twice day [b.i.d.] for 5 days). To...

Evidence regarding the association between body mass index (BMI) and mortality in TB patients is limited inconsistent. We investigated effect of BMI on TB-specific non-TB-specific patients. All adult Taiwanese with Taipei, Taiwan, during 2011 to 2012 were included this retrospective cohort study. Multinomial logistic regression was used evaluate associations cause death Of 1608 eligible patients, 83.6% (1345) successfully treated, 3.3% (53) died causes, 13.1% (210) causes. Mean age 64.6...

From 1990 through 1994, we collected information on all cases of mycotic aneurysms due to non-typhi Salmonella that occurred at the Veterans General Hospital in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. All salmonella bacteremia were reviewed find any additional cases. A total 16 occurred. The mortality rate was 100% among three patients treated with medical therapy alone. Nine (70%) 13 who received surgical and survived. Ten choleraesuis. Diagnosis established by computed tomography or aortography. Gallium scans...

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the most common cause of eosinophilic meningitis worldwide. Human infection occurs after ingestion worms in raw snails or fish that serve as intermediate hosts. Two outbreaks central nervous system with A. occurred Kaoshiung, Taiwan, during 1998 and 1999 among Thai laborers who ate snails. A detailed clinical studies 17 these patients was conducted, including study 13 underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans brain. The MRI revealed high signal...

Abstract Background With international concern over emerging infectious diseases (EID) and bioterrorist attacks, public health is being required to have early outbreak detection systems. A disease surveillance team was organized establish a hospital emergency department-based syndromic system (ED-SSS) capable of automatically transmitting patient data electronically from the hospitals responsible for care throughout country Centers Disease Control in Taiwan (Taiwan-CDC) starting March, 2004....

Despite good initial responses, drug resistance and disease recurrence remain major issues for lung adenocarcinoma patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations taking EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI). To discover new strategies to overcome this issue, we investigated 40 essential oils from plants indigenous Taiwan as alternative treatments a wide range of illnesses. Here, found that hinokitiol, natural monoterpenoid the heartwood Calocedrus formosana, exhibited potent...

ABSTRACT Resistance (intermediate and high) to penicillin among Streptococcus pneumoniae strains is an emerging problem worldwide. From 1995 1997, isolates of S. not susceptible were seen with increasing frequency from blood, cerebrospinal fluid, pleural middle ear fluid pediatric patients at the Veterans General Hospital-Kaohsiung. To determine prevalence carriage these penicillin-nonsusceptible isolates, we obtained nasopharyngeal swab specimens 2,905 children (ages, 2 months 7 years)...
