Some studies have shown that metformin activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and has a potent cardioprotective effect against ischemia/reperfusion injury. Because AMPK also is activated in animal models of heart failure, we investigated whether decreases cardiomyocyte apoptosis attenuates the progression failure dogs.Treatment with (10 micromol/L) protected cultured cardiomyocytes from cell death during exposure to H2O2 (50 via activation, as by MTT assay, terminal deoxynucleotidyl...

Pneumonia is a major cause of death in the elderly. To investigate role silent aspiration community-acquired pneumonia, we examined occurrence during sleep 14 elderly patients with acute episode pneumonia and 10 age-matched control subjects by new technique using indium111 chloride. Scanning thorax demonstrated that 71% aspirated, whereas was observed only 10% subjects. The percentage positive scans significantly higher than (p < 0.02). results may indicate an important development

Abstract To clarify the alterations of tau, amyloid β protein (Aβ) 1–40 and Aβ1–42(43) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that accompany normal aging progression Alzheimer's disease (AD), CSF samples 93 AD patients, 32 longitudinal subjects among these 33 patients with non‐AD dementia, 56 other neurological diseases, 54 control from three independent institutes were analyzed by sensitive enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays. Although tau levels increased aging, a significant elevation correlation...

We have previously reported that the prolonged transient acidosis during early reperfusion mediates cardioprotective effects in canine hearts. Recently, postconditioning has been shown to be one of novel strategies mediate cardioprotection. tested contribution cardioprotection postconditioning. Open-chest anesthetized dogs subjected 90-min occlusion left anterior descending coronary artery and 6-h were divided into four groups: 1) control group; no intervention after (n = 6); 2) (Postcon)...

How does smooth muscle tone affect the properties of airways during breathing maneuvers? We have studied dynamic relationships airway pressure and cross-sectional area in excised dog lobes isolated tracheal segments simulated maneuvers. When contracted by carbachol, developed complex hysteretic behavior, becoming less compliant small tidal breaths rapid deflations, grossly large For a given sequence maneuvers patterns hysteresis varied with timing. Analogous behavior was seen length-cycling...

Inhibition of cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) ameliorates pathological cardiac remodeling and has been gaining attention as a potential therapy for heart failure. Despite promising results in males, the efficacy PDE5 inhibitor sildenafil female pathologies not determined might be affected by estrogen levels, given hormone's involvement cGMP synthesis. Here, we that heart-protective effect mice depends on presence via mechanism involves myocyte eNOS-dependent synthesis cGMP-dependent...

Huntington's disease (HD) is a polyglutamine (polyQ) caused by aberrant expansion of the polyQ tract in Huntingtin (HTT). While motor impairment mediated polyQ-expanded HTT has been intensively studied, molecular mechanisms for nonmotor symptoms HD, such as psychiatric manifestations, remain elusive. Here we have demonstrated that forms ternary protein complex with scaffolding DISC1 and cAMP-degrading phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) to regulate PDE4 activity. We observed pathological...
