Background and purpose: Evidence indicates that the endocannabinoid, 2‐arachidonoylglycerol (2‐AG), increases food intake when injected into nucleus accumbens shell (NAcS), thereby potentially activating hypothalamic nuclei involved in regulation. We aimed to evaluate potential orexigenic effects of endocannabinoid anandamide AA5HT, a fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitor, OMDM‐1, an inhibitor uptake, NAcS, as well effect these treatments on activation nuclei. Experimental approach:...

ABSTRACT Background Streptococcus pneumoniae is a nasopharynx coloniser that can invade sterile tissues, causing Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD). Dolosigranulum pigrum and Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum are commensal bacteria commonly isolated from the of healthy children, potentially playing protective role. This study aims to analyse effects D. C. on S. in vitro growth. Methods strains were collected IPD patients carriers Catalonia (2016-2023). child’s nasopharynx. was...

Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) is released from the median eminence upon neural stimulation such as cold or suckling exposure. Concomitant with cold- suckling-induced release of TRH a rapid and transient increase in expression proTRH mRNA paraventricular nucleus (PVN) hypothalamus. We employed two strategies to determine whether neurons responding exposure are different those suckling. First, we attempted identify marker cellular activation PVN. Cold induced c-fos...

The hypothalamic-pituitary thyroid (HPT) axis modulates energy homeostasis. Its activity decreases in conditions of negative balance but the effects chronic exercise on are controversial and unknown at hypothalamic level. Wistar male rats were exposed for up to 14 days voluntary wheel running (WR), or pair-feeding (PF; 18% food restriction), repeated restraint (RR), a mild stressor. WR RR diminished intake; body weight gain decreased 3 experimental groups, WAT mass serum leptin more...

Fasting and malnutrition affect the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis causing secondary hypothyroidism. The aim of this study was to determine effect 48h fasting in rats 4 12 weeks old, 7 food restriction, activity adenohypophysial thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)-degrading ectoenzyme; also, if these conditions altered peptide levels its messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) brain areas limbic system. Male Wistar rat brains were excised, frozen dissected for measurement of: (TRH) content by...

COVID-19 vaccination recommendations include healthcare workers (HCWs). We measured vaccine effectiveness (CVE) of the autumn 2023 dose against laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in a prospective cohort study 1,305 HCWs from 13 European hospitals. Overall CVE was 22% (95% CI: −17 to 48), 49% −8 76) before and −11% −84 34) after start BA.2.86/JN.1 predominant circulation. Autumn led moderate-to-low reduction incidence HCWs. Monitoring is crucial for prevention.
