Micronutrient deficiencies compromise immune systems, hinder child growth and development, affect human potential worldwide. Yet, to our knowledge, the only existing estimate of global prevalence micronutrient is from over 30 years ago based on anaemia. We aimed regional deficiency in at least one three micronutrients among preschool-aged children (aged 6-59 months) non-pregnant women reproductive age 15-49 years).
The childhood obesity rate has been steadily rising among US youths during the past 2 decades. Increasing evidence links consumption of ultraprocessed foods to excessive calorie and weight gain, but trends in have not well characterized.
Background Children with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) have an increased risk of mortality, infections and impaired physical cognitive development compared to well-nourished children. In parts Ethiopia not considered chronically food insecure there are no supplementary feeding programmes (SFPs) for treating MAM. The short-term outcomes children who MAM in such areas currently described, remains urgent need evidence-based policy recommendations. Methods We defined as mid-upper arm...
The Biomarkers Reflecting Inflammation and Nutritional Determinants of Anemia (BRINDA) research group was formed over a decade ago to improve the interpretation micronutrient biomarkers in settings with inflammation. BRINDA inflammation adjustment method uses regression correction adjust for confounding effects on select has provided important insights research, policy, programming. However, users may face challenges when applying methods their own data due varying guidance approach...
Abstract Data from the 2007–2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) suggested that nearly half of U.S. adults aged 20 to 69 reported taking at least one dietary supplement in past month. Logistic regression showed following factors were independently associated with a greater likelihood use: being female, older, white, having higher level education, non-SNAP participation, living food-secure household. To compare nutrient intakes between users non-supplement users,...
Anemia is an important cause of child morbidity and mortality. Postmortem point-of-care hemoglobin testing a potential method for assessing anemia at death, but its reliability has not been extensively studied. We aimed to assess the feasibility validity postmortem assessment using HemoCue in setting mortality surveillance program South Africa. In pilot cohort study, 44 children under five years age who died academic hospital Africa were enrolled. Hemoglobin levels measured from venous blood...
Poor pain control may lead to persistent physical discomfort and even reduced perceptual abilities. This research seeks investigate the relationship between status duration sensory impairments. study used data on impairments from National Health Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted 2011 2014, including 8043 participants. Functional of vision, hearing, smell, taste was gathered using structured questionnaires. Logistic regression models were evaluate association status, duration,...
Information on long-term dietary intake is often required for research or program planning, but surveys routinely use short-term assessments such as 24-h recalls (24HRs). Methods to reduce the impact of within-person variation in 24HRs, National Cancer Institute (NCI) method, typically require extensive training and skill. We introduce Simulating Intake Micronutrients Policy Learning Engagement (SIMPLE) macro, a new tool increase accessibility 24HR analysis. explain underlying theory behind...
Abstract Several intervention strategies are available to reduce micronutrient deficiencies, but uncoordinated implementation of multiple interventions may result in excessive intakes. We reviewed relevant data collection instruments and information on intakes for selected micronutrients considered possible approaches weighing competing risks intake above tolerable upper levels (ULs) versus insufficient at the population level. In general, population‐based surveys low‐ middle‐income...
To estimate usual intake distributions of dietary components, collection nonconsecutive repeated 24-h recalls is recommended, but resource limitations sometimes restrict data to single-day per person. We developed a new statistical method, the NCI 1-d which uses and an external within-person between-person variance ratio population nearly-daily consumed foods nutrients. used NHANES 2011–2014 for men (n = 4938 n 4293 first second recalls) compare nutrient vitamin A, magnesium, folate, E...
Attention to nutrition continues grow. The recent surge in interest has included widening agreement on two major issues: first, goals cannot be achieved through targeted actions alone; nutrition-sensitive interventions are needed as well. Second, the multiple required address all forms of malnutrition lifecycle proxied by a single target or metric. Although Millennium Development Goals one concrete measure (children underweight), post-2015 Sustainable will include measures that better inform...
Abstract Meeting children's vitamin A (VA) needs remains a policy priority. Doing so efficiently is fiscal imperative and protecting at‐risk children during transitions moral imperative. Using the Micronutrient Intervention Modeling tool data for Cameroon, we predict impacts costs of alternative VA intervention programs, identify least‐cost strategy meeting targets nationally, compare it to business‐as‐usual (BAU) over 10 years. BAU programs effectively cover ∼12.8 million (m) child‐years...
After recovery, children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) remain vulnerable to sub-optimal growth and relapse. Although there is an increased interest in understanding these problems, data are scarce, contextual factors can cause variability. We prospectively followed a cohort of Ethiopian (215 post-SAM cases 215 non-wasted controls), monthly for one year. The were: age 6–59 months at admission into the community management (CMAM) program being successfully discharged from CMAM...
Dietary intake and biomarkers of micronutrient status 100 non-pregnant women reproductive age (NPWRA) were assessed to determine optimal levels iron, zinc, vitamin B12, folic acid include in multiply-fortified salt (MFS) that will be evaluated an upcoming trial. Weighed food records obtained from participants measure micronutrients discretionary salt, assess adequacy using Indian Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs). Statistical modeling was used fortification reduce inadequate while limiting...
Since 2011 Cameroon has mandated the fortification of refined vegetable oil with vitamin A and wheat flour iron, zinc, folic acid, B-12. In 2012, measured levels for flour, particularly oil, were below target. We assessed Cameroon's food program using a impact pathway (PIP) to identify barriers optimal performance. developed PIP through literature review key informant interviews. conducted interviews at domestic factories (n = 9) 10). 12 sentinel sites distributed nationally, we availability...
There is an urgent need for tools to better understand and measure the nutrition challenges identified in Sustainable Development Goals. Proposed updates existing Net State of Nutrition Index (NeSNI) do at highlighting multi-dimensional nature malnutrition (undernutrition, overweight, micronutrient deficiencies) that can occur simultaneously within a country allows nations be ranked based on complex burden as well monitoring change over time multiple issues simultaneously. NeSNI was...
