Abstract Background Guidelines about febrile neutropenia in paediatric patients are not homogeneous; the best empiric treatment of this condition should be driven by local epidemiology. The Weighted-Incidence Syndromic Combination Antibiogram (WISCA) addresses need for disease-specific susceptibility evidence that could guide antibiotic prescriptions based on outcome estimates regimens obtained as a weighted average pathogen susceptibilities. This study developed WISCA model to inform...

ABSTRACT Background Several studies have shown that the intensity of treatment in Ewing sarcoma has an impact on outcome. The present trial tested non‐inferiority intensive, shorter, induction chemotherapy (25 weeks total time) compared to standard (37 weeks) non‐metastatic (ES) at onset. Procedure This national, multicenter, parallel, randomized, controlled, open‐label, non‐inferiority, phase III was conducted 14 specialized hospitals Italy. Patients aged 2‐40 years with newly diagnosed...

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is one of the most common nonrhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcomas encountered in pediatric age, and it generally characterized by poor outcome, particularly for relapsing patients. This study considered 73 patients <21 years age with MPNST observed among 120 enrolled Italian protocols from 1979 to 2004. With aim possibly establishing a risk-adapted stratification, patients' outcome was examined using univariate multivariate analysis based on...

Worldwide, the coronavirus 19 disease pandemic caused a worse chance of timely diagnosis for cancer patients. We conducted retrospective analysis new diagnoses registered in national pediatric oncology database, comparing first lockdown period (March-May 2020) with same 2015-2019. The total number cases (0-19 years) dropped by 20.8% (from 441 between 2015 and 2019 to 349 2020). A major reduction was observed adolescents (15-19 (-32.9%) solid tumors (-56.4%, p = 0.03). Our data suggest that...

Introduction: From 2002 to 2011, the Italian Soft Tissue Sarcoma Committee explored a combination of topotecan and carboplatin as second-line strategy for children with resistant or relapsing rhabdomyosarcoma. Methods: Patients received two blocks 2 mg/m on days 1, 2, 3, 250 4 5, followed by alternating topotecan–cyclophosphamide carboplatin–etoposide total six courses 3-week intervals. Tumor response was assessed after cycles, local control implemented when feasible. Results: A 38 patients...

Abstract Background Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a highly malignant tumor typically affecting children and adolescents. Central nervous system (CNS) dissemination rare in RMS patients, but seems to have particularly negative impact. The aim of this study was analyze treatment outcome patients with evidence CNS disease who were registered the protocols coordinated by Italian Soft Tissue Sarcoma Committee from March 1979 December 2016. Methods We analyzed 39 disease. Depending on when their...

We describe three children who developed an osteosarcoma after receiving treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, which included allogeneic bone marrow transplant (BMT). discuss the therapeutic options. None of patients responded to conventional chemotherapy, but one patient given regorafenib showed a temporary response. conclude that BMT has aggressive course and it is worth further investigating multikinase inhibitors in this setting.
