Abstract Background The worldwide occurrence of nontuberculous Mycobacterium (NTM) infections is rising. In Canada, there a continuing surge in caused by avium complex (MAC). Treating NTM challenging and requires multidrug regimens with antimicrobial susceptibilities to guide therapy. Generally, aminoglycosides have moderate in-vitro activity against isolates. However, the synergistic effect other antimicrobials makes it an attractive choice for clinicians, especially management severe or...
Xpert Xpress SARS-CoV-2/Flu/RSV is a rapid diagnostic test currently approved for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 using upper respiratory tract specimens. This study attempts to assess performance this assay and lower specimens by comparing its results lab-developed PCR test. We assessed GeneXpert SARS-CoV-2, influenza A, B, syncytial virus In addition, was evaluated (bronchoalveolar lavage tracheal aspirate). Precision reproducibility were also samples with varying cycle threshold values. shows...
Comamonas kerstersii (C. kerstersii) is a Gram-negative bacillus abundant in the environment and rarely implicated human disease. Previously considered nonpathogenic, its scarcity literature may be partly due to unreliability of past phenotypic tests used for identification. In recent years, development matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) has enabled fast accurate laboratory identification C. kerstersii. Since first report infection...
Disseminated cryptococcal infection carries a high risk of morbidity and mortality. Typical patients include HIV individuals with advanced immunosuppression or solid organ hematopoietic transplant recipients. We report case disseminated disease in 72-year-old male who was immunocompromised chronic lymphocytic leukemia ongoing chemotherapy. The patient presented subacute history constitutional symptoms headache after he received five cycles FCR chemotherapy...
Early identification of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) by diagnostic tests played an important role in the isolation infectious patients and management this pandemic. Various methodologies platforms are available. The current "gold standard" for SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) diagnosis is real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). To overcome limitations posed short supply experienced early during pandemic to increase our capacity,...
This study validated the performance of reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) based Cepheid Xpert® Xpress SARS-CoV-2 assay against TIB MOLBIOL E-gene/EAV, a standard laboratory rRT-PCR assay. Upper and lower respiratory tract samples (nasopharyngeal nasal swabs, bronchoalveolar lavage, tracheal aspirate) were obtained from patients suspected to have contracted COVID-19. Results assays compared for positive negative agreement analyzed precision, reproducibility, 95%...
Abstract We correlated antibiotic consumption measured by point prevalence survey with defined daily doses (DDD) across multiple hospitals. Point had a higher correlation (1) monthly DDDs than annual DDDs, (2) in nonsurgical versus surgical wards, and (3) on high- low-utilization wards. Findings may be hospital specific due to differences.
Yokenella regensburgei infections have been documented in several immunocompromised individuals with numerous associated risk factors including soft tissue infections, organ transplants, and metabolic disorders. Our report presents a rare case of Y. infection an immunocompetent individual. In September 2020, 38-year-old man who was otherwise healthy fell from personal conveyance causing puncture his elbow. Two months later, he admitted to the hospital chronic draining wound on left arm no...
This case report details the presentation, diagnostic process, and management of tuberculous pericarditis (TBP) in a 43-year-old male with history chronic severe pericarditis, right-sided heart failure, rheumatoid arthritis. The patient exhibited symptoms chest pain dyspnea showed signs ascites mild lower limb edema. Our was found to have significant pericardial thickening effusion, as well necrotic lymph nodes. Diagnostic tests, including positive QuantiFERON-TB test (QIAGEN, Hilden,...
Background This comparative study evaluates the performance of medical/surgical and mixed intensive care units (ICUs) at a tertiary university hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, using key indicators (KPIs). Since its establishment 1982, has provided comprehensive medical services, including specialized, closed-model ICUs, medical, surgical, pediatric ICUs. In 2021, these ICUs transitioned to ICU model enhance efficiency patient care. aims assess impact this transition on various KPIs,...
Abstract Introduction/Background Pasteurella multocida causes life-threatening zoonotic invasive infections in immunocompromised individuals and those at extremes of age (neonates elderly). Bacteremia, meningitis, endocarditis are serious complications that associated with up to 25-30% mortality. Case Description A 7-week-old ex-34-week preterm female infant presented a one-day history fever, irritability, poor feeding without exposure sick contacts. Household contacts included constantly...
