Olfactory dysfunction (OD) has been reported in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, there are knowledge gaps about the severity, prevalence, etiology, and duration of OD COVID-19 patients.
After 2 months of relative quiescence, a large coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak occurred in Hong Kong July 2020 after gradual relaxation social distancing policy. Unique severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2) phylogenetic clusters have been identified among locally acquired cases, with most genomes belonging to cluster HK1, which is phylogenetically related SARS-CoV-2 reported overseas.
Posterior oropharyngeal saliva is increasingly recognized as a valid respiratory specimen for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis. It easy to collect and suitable community-wide screening. The optimal timing of collection currently unknown, we speculate that an early-morning before oral hygiene breakfast would increase the diagnostic yield.Posterior was collected at 5 different time points within same day from 18 patients with previously confirmed infection by molecular testing. Cycle threshold (Ct) values...
Early antiviral therapy was effective in the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We assessed efficacy and safety combined interferon beta-1b remdesivir hospitalized COVID-19 patients. We conducted a multicentre, prospective open-label, randomized-controlled trial involving high-risk adults for COVID-19. Patients were randomly assigned to 5-day 16 million units daily 200 mg loading on day 1 followed by 100 2 5 (combination group), or only similar regimen (control group) (1:1)....
Abstract Initial cases of COVID-19 reported in Hong Kong were mostly imported from China. However, most February 2020 locally-acquired infections, indicating local community transmissions. We extracted the demographic, clinical and epidemiological data 50 patients, who accounted for 53.8% by 2020. Whole-genome sequencing SARS-CoV-2 conducted to determine phylogenetic relatedness transmission dynamics. Only three (6.0%) patients required ICU admission. Phylogenetic analysis identified six...
Abstract Initial cases of coronavirus disease in Hong Kong were imported from mainland China. A dramatic increase case numbers was seen February 2020. Most case-patients had no recent travel history, suggesting the presence transmission chains local community. We collected demographic, clinical, and epidemiologic data 50 patients, who accounted for 53.8% total reported as 28, performed whole-genome sequencing to determine phylogenetic relationship dynamics severe acute respiratory syndrome 2...
SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has resulted in over 4 million infections yet the role of host immune responses early COVID-19 pathogenesis remains unclear. By evaluating 15 acute and 24 convalescent patients' profile, we report herein infection broad cell reduction including T cells, NK cell, monocytes dendritic cells (DCs). DCs were significantly reduced with functional impairment, cDC/pDC ratios increased among severe patients. Besides lymphocytopenia, although neutralizing antibodies rapidly...
Abstract Introduction Post COVID-19 neurological sequelae (popularly termed “Long COVID”), which include chronic sleep disruption and “brain fog” are widespread; however, studies have not yet comprehensively evaluated the concurrent effects of these disruptions neurocognitive function their relationship to disturbance. Methods Participants aged between 40-65, with no more than 2 cardiovascular risk factors were stratified into three groups ten: Group 1 (pre-pandemic datasets), (individuals...
Abstract Introduction Nocturnal swallowing and cortical arousals from sleep both produce rapid transient heartrate increases driven by autonomic activation. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is associated with dysfunction cardiovascular diseases, however, the underpinning mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we examine activation during in OSA. Methods Overnight epiglottic pressure data a previous study were analyzed using custom semi-automated analysis scripts to extract variables for swallows...
