Abstract Lassa fever (LF) is endemic to Nigeria, where the disease causes substantial rates of illness and death. In this article, we report an analysis epidemiologic clinical aspects LF outbreak that occurred in Nigeria during January 1–May 6, 2018. A total 1,893 cases were reported; 423 laboratory-confirmed cases, among which 106 deaths recorded (case-fatality rate 25.1%). Among all confirmed 37 healthcare workers. The secondary attack 5,001 contacts was 0.56%. Most (80.6%) reported from 3...
To investigate epidemiology of and risk factors for laboratory-confirmed mpox during the 2022 outbreak in Nigeria, we enrolled 265 persons with suspected mpox. A total 163 (61.5%) were confirmed to have mpox; 137 (84.0%) adults, 112 (68.7%) male, 143 (87.7%) urban/semi-urban dwellers, 12 (7.4%) self-reported gay men, 3 (1.8%) female sex workers. Significant adults sexual nonsexual contact who had mpox, as well risky behavior. For children, close an mpox-positive person prior animal exposure....
Abstract We reviewed data pertaining to the massive wave of Lassa fever cases that occurred in Nigeria 2018. No new virus strains were detected, but 2018, outbreak response was intensified, additional diagnostic support available, and surveillance sensitivity increased. These factors probably contributed high case count.
Lassa virus (LASV) is endemic in parts of West Africa where it causes fever (LF), a viral hemorrhagic with frequent fatal outcomes. The diverse LASV strains are grouped into six major lineages based on the geographical location isolated strains. In this study, we have focused lineage II from southern Nigeria. We determined sequences positive cases LF reported at tertiary hospitals Ebonyi and Enugu between 2012 2016. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) showed that 29 out...
Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic continues to overwhelm health systems across the globe. We aimed assess readiness of hospitals in Nigeria respond outbreak. Method Between April and October 2020, hospital representatives completed a modified World Health Organisation (WHO) checklist consisting 13 components 124 indicators. Readiness scores were classified as adequate (score ≥80%), moderate 50–79.9%) not ready <50%). Results Among 20 (17 tertiary three secondary) from all six...
Abstract Background As part of the Global Action Plan against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), countries are required to generate local evidence inform context-specific implementation national action plans AMR (NAPAR). We aimed evaluate knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding antibiotic prescriptions (APR) among physicians in tertiary hospitals Nigeria, determine predictors KAP APR AMR. Methods In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled practicing from all six geopolitical zones...
To describe our experiences in the management of a case Lassa fever (LF) and follow-up nosocomial primary contacts during 2014 Ebola outbreak West Africa.Clinical index infection control/surveillance activities for are described. Laboratory confirmation was by virus-specific reverse-transcriptase PCR.A 28-year-old man with 10-day history febrile illness referred to major tertiary hospital south-east Nigeria from city that previously experienced LF recently affected Ebola. On observation...
Abstract Background We describe clinicoepidemiologic characteristics of mpox-chickenpox coinfection in Nigeria. Methods A retrospective cohort analysis was performed confirmed mpox cases Nigeria from January 2022 to March 2023. Mpox and chickenpox were by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results Of 94 (60.0%) suspected cases, 56 had mpox, whom 16 (28.6%) coinfection. The median age 29 years (interquartile range, 20–37 years), 24 men (60.7%), 6 (10.7%) bisexual, 5 (8.9%) died....
Lassa fever (LF) is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness with various non-specific clinical manifestations. Neurological symptoms are rare at the early stage of disease, but may be seen in late stages, severely ill patients. The aim this study was to describe epidemiological evolution, socio-demographic profiles, characteristics, and outcomes patients during two outbreaks Ebonyi State, between December 2017 2018. Routinely collected data from all admitted Virology Centre hospital period were...
Abstract Melioidosis, caused by the soil-dwelling bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, is predicted to be endemic in Nigeria but only occasionally reported. This report documents systematic identification of presence B. pseudomallei and thailandensis soil across multiple states Nigeria.
Introduction: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are potentially exposed to infection during viral hemorrhagic fever outbreaks. In the wake of 2018, Nigeria experienced an unprecedented surge in cases Lassa (LF), which affected HCWs. To guide prevention and control (IPC) strategies similar settings, we characterize HCWs' describe gaps IPC standards practices outbreak. Methods: Data was collected using a structured questionnaire, interview, review case notes 21 HCW with laboratory-confirmed who were...
Abstract Background We describe diverse clinical characteristics and course of confirmed mpox cases managed in a Nigerian tertiary health facility. Methods Clinical epidemiologic data were analyzed, highlighting the unusual presentations polymerase chain reaction (PCR)–confirmed observed during 2022 outbreak. Results Out 17 suspected cases, 13 (76.4%) PCR for mpox. The mean ± SD age participants was 28.62 10.29 years (range, 2–55), which 9 (64.3%) male. Of PCR-confirmed 5 (38.5%) had...
Abstract Background Necrotizing soft tissue infection of the ear following piercing is a very rare condition. It easily misdiagnosed leading to reconstructive morbidities and mortality in neonates. High clinical suspicion important for early diagnosis. Our knowledge, this first case reported literature unique initial presentation. We hope heighten awareness necrotizing ensure aggressive intervention. Case presentation report set 19-day-old female twin neonates who developed bilateral sores...
Abstract Background and objectives The optimal iron hypothesis (OIH) posits that risk for infection is lowest at a mild level of deficiency. extent to which this protection results from arms race dynamics in the evolution acquisition sequestration mechanisms unclear. We evaluated OIH with regard severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), an emerging infectious agent. Methodology tested 304 healthcare workers baseline deficiency (zinc protoporphyrin:heme), anemia...
We described the demographic/clinical characteristics and in-hospital outcome of patients with COVID-19 at University Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) during first wave to inform evidence-based responses subsequent waves in Africa. We conducted retrospective cohort analyses adult ≥18 years PCR or GeneXpert-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection. Data was extracted from patients' medical records 1st May 30th September 2020. Based on disease severity, were either hospitalized (82) managed home (90)....
The prevalence and case fatality rates of Pediatric Lassa fever disease (LFD) are not well documented. This study was aimed at determining the prevalence, pattern outcome LFD. It a prospective observational study. A total 183 subjects that met criteria for LFD suspects were recruited consecutively subjected to virus PCR test. Structured questionnaire used collect information. Of children recruited, 24 tested positive PCR, giving positivity rate 13.1%. Mean duration illness presentation 8.54...
Background: The rapidity of wound bed preparation is determined in part by the type dressing agent employed. extension phase which characterized presence sloughs and eschar microbial invasion could be managed nonsurgically.
