An epidemic of infections after video-assisted surgery (1,051 possible cases) caused by rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) and involving 63 hospitals in the state Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, occurred between August 2006 July 2007. One hundred ninety-seven cases were confirmed positive acid-fast staining and/or culture techniques. Thirty-eight had mycobacterial culture, with a total 148 available isolates recovered from 146 patients. Most (n = 144; 97.2%) presented PRA-hsp65 restriction pattern...

The most important resistance mechanism against β-lactam drugs is the production of carbapenemases. In this study, we report first identification Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-2 and New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM)-1 in Enterobacter hormaechei subps. oharae from Brazil. detection carbapenemases was done by phenotypic assays, PCR, DNA sequencing, whereas performed conventional techniques, sequencing 16S rDNA gene, hsp60-genotyping. As Pseudomonas aeruginosa ExoU possesses two functional blocks of homology to calcium-independent (iPLA2) and cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2), we addressed the question whether it would exhibit a proinflammatory activity by enhancing synthesis eicosanoids host organisms. Endothelial cells from HMEC-1 line infected with ExoU-producing PA103 strain exhibited potent release arachidonic acid (AA) that could be significantly inhibited methyl arachidonyl fluorophosphonate (MAFP), specific PLA2...

We investigated the possibility of cross-infection among cystic fibrosis patients in two Brazilian reference centers. Achromobacter xylosoxidans isolates (n = 122) were recovered over a 5-year period from 39 patients. Isolates genetically heterogeneous, but one genotype was present 56% patients, suggesting that may have occurred.

ABSTRACT Worldwide, nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) have become emergent pathogens of pulmonary infections in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, with an estimated prevalence ranging from 5 to 20%. This work investigated the presence NTM sputum samples 129 CF patients (2 18 years old) submitted longitudinal clinical supervision at a regional reference center Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. From June 2009 March 2012, 36 isolates recovered 10 (7.75%) out children were obtained. Molecular identification...

Pulmonary deterioration after B.cepacia complex (BCC) colonization has a heterogeneous pattern. The aim was to investigate the clinical outcome of BCC in CF patients chronically colonized with P. aeruginosa.CF aeruginosa were divided into three groups: intermittent (I), chronic (II) and no (III) BCC. Body mass index (BMI) percentile spirometric parameters analyzed at different times each group.Fifty-six included. Of these, 27 also had evidence (13 14 chronic). BMI significantly lower among...

The rate of diagnosis colonization/infection the airways with Achromobacter xylosoxidans has increased in cystic fibrosis patients, but its clinical significance is still controversial. This retrospective, case-control study aimed to evaluate impact A. patients. Individuals who were chronically colonized/infected (n=10), intermittently (n=15), and never (n=18) retrospectively evaluated during two periods that 2 years apart. Summary The tracheobronchial secretions from patients with cystic fibrosis often contain high amounts of free proteases. To evaluate whether human leucocyte elastase (HLE) can favour the persistence bacterial airways infection, we exposed frog palate mucosa to HLE and then radiolabelled Pseudomonas aeruginosa followed sequence events by scanning electronmicroscopy. In response there was a marked outpouring mucus desquamation epithelium. P. shown adhere recently secreted granules submucosal...

SUMMARY Achromobacter spp. are opportunistic pathogens increasingly recovered from adult patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). We report the characterization of 122 isolates 39 CF by multilocus sequence typing, virulence traits, and susceptibility to antimicrobials. Two species, A. xylosoxidans (77%) ruhlandii (23%) were identified. All showed a similar biofilm formation ability, positive swimming phenotype. By contrast, 4·3% 44·4% , respectively, exhibited negative swarming phenotype, making...

Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) identified 17 xylosoxidans isolates (all bla(OXA-114) positive), nine ruhlandii one dolens isolate, and insuavis isolate. All less common species misidentified as A. by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Chronic colonization clonally related was demonstrated.
