Background and Purpose: There is epidemiological evidence that increased carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) a predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. However, the significance IMT in high-risk patients whom risk factors are managed clinically has not been adequately investigated. The purpose this study was to determine usefulness measurement such patients. Methods: comprised 900 outpatients with or established atherosclerosis. Carotid...
Innate immunity is the front line of self-defense against microbial infection. After searching for natural substances that regulate innate using an ex vivo Drosophila culture system, we identified a novel dimeric chromanone, gonytolide A, as immune promoter from fungus Gonytrichum sp. along with gonytolides B and C. Gonytolide A also increased TNF-α-stimulated production IL-8 in human umbilical vein endothelial cells.
We identified 2 novel species, Mycobacterium novusgordonae and M. shingordonae, from sputum specimens of pulmonary disease patients in Japan. Genetic biochemical analyses revealed a close relationship with paragordonae. One shingordonae case-patient experienced severe progressive infection, highlighting the variation pathogenicity gordonae clade species.
Abstract Background Interstitial lung disease (ILD), represented by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and progressive (PPF), shows poor prognosis due to fibrosis. Early therapeutic intervention is required enhance the efficacy of antifibrotic drugs, highlighting importance early detection ILD progression. Although candidate biomarkers for predicting progression have been recently reported through omics analyses, clinically measurable remain unestablished. This study aimed identify that...
Abstract There is still controversy surrounding the indications for performing either a retrograde ureteral stent or percutaneous nephrostomy to manage malignant extrinsic obstruction (MEUO). We retrospectively analyzed 53 patients who underwent decompression of MEUO using stent. Ureteral failure occurred in 18 (34%). Multivariate analysis showed that gastrointestinal cancer as primary disease, poor preoperative performance status and severe hydronephrosis were independent predictors...
Background: Multidrug therapy is essential for preventing respiratory failure in patients with highly progressive Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease (MAC-PD). However, the prognosis and long-term outcome following combination poorly understood. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated clinical characteristics outcomes chemo-naïve MAC-PD, hospitalized first-line multidrug therapy. Results: Among 125 patients, 86 (68.8%) received standardized treatment (rifampicin, ethambutol,...
Abstract Cisplatin, one of the most active anticancer agents, is widely used in standard chemotherapy for various cancers. Cisplatin more poorly tolerated than other chemotherapeutic drugs, and main dose-limiting toxicity cisplatin its nephrotoxicity, which dose-dependent. Although less toxic methods administration have been established, cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity remains an unsolved problem. Megalin endocytic receptor expressed at apical membrane proximal tubules. We previously...
Background Limited data exist on the prognostic factors for patients with ischemic stroke and active cancer. Methods Results We conducted a prospective, multicenter, observational study in Japan, including acute cancer, to investigate factors. followed up 1 year after onset. The were divided into 2 groups according cryptogenic known causes (small-vessel occlusion, large-artery atherosclerosis, cardioembolism, other determined cause), survival was compared. hazard ratios (HRs) 95% CIs...
We performed ultrasonography and (99m)technetium dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) renal scan in infants with unilateral hydronephrosis during followup after pyeloplasty to examine the correlation of ultrasound grade severity cortical damage assess recovery function obstructed kidneys surgery. We studied 80 boys 19 girls detected first year life, including 75 (76%) whom it was prenatally. Ultrasound images were graded according Society for Fetal Urology grading system. The assessed by DMSA scan....
A new approach to the synthesis of 4-aryl- or 4-arylthioquinoline-2-thiones via indium(III) reagent-mediated tandem Friedel−Crafts alkenylation−cyclization 2-alkynylphenyl isothiocyanates is described.
Both silent cerebral infarction (SCI) and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) are associated with future stroke. We evaluated whether SCI could be a predictor for incident stroke independent of IMT in high-risk patients. We performed prospective cohort study among 282 outpatients who had one or more atherosclerotic risk factors but without history cardiovascular disease. conducted cranial MRI measured at baseline, then the risks transient ischemic attacks (TIA) using Cox proportional hazards...
Yamakagashi (Rhabdophis tigrinus) is a species of pit viper present throughout Russia and Eastern Asia. Although R. tigrinus venom known to induce life-threatening hemorrhagic symptoms, the clinical characteristics effective treatment bites remain unknown. The study aimed clarify these issues.Records in Japan Snake Institute between 2000 2013 were retrospectively investigated. following determined: patient characteristics, coagulation fibrinolytic system abnormalities, effect antivenom...
ABSTRACT This single-center retrospective study aimed to analyze the variability of macrolide resistance (MR) in 68 patients with Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease. Among 25 treated without macrolides, 13 (52%) reverted macrolide-susceptible (MS) profiles. Only one (2%) 43 who continued treatment showed this change. We compared 30 MR isolates recent specimens. them, seven shifted MS (five attributed clonally related strains; two resulting from reinfection or polyclonal infection).
Objective: Both inflammatory markers and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) are associated with future cardiovascular disease (CVD). We investigated whether can be predictors for incident CVD independent of IMT in atherosclerotic high-risk patients evaluated the joint effect prediction. Methods: performed a prospective cohort study 770 who had one or more risk factors. Serum high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-18, were...
Carotid artery stenting (CAS) is currently a standard procedure to treat severe carotid stenosis. This causes mechanical plaque rupture, potentially releasing soluble factors into the circulating blood. The purpose of this study clarify whether inflammation are released from an atherosclerotic after CAS and local release associated with periprocedural new ischemic lesions. consisted 35 patients 40 severely stenotic arteries who underwent CAS. Blood samples were obtained aorta before site...
Objective No studies have demonstrated the real-world efficacy of antifibrotics for progressive fibrosing interstitial lung disease (PF-ILD). Therefore, we evaluated in patients with PF-ILD. Methods We retrospectively reviewed medical records ILD from January 2012 to July 2021. Patients were diagnosed PF-ILD if they had ≥10% fibrosis on high-resolution CT (HRCT) and a relative forced vital capacity (FVC) decline either or >5% <10% clinical deterioration progression HRCT during...
Rhabdophis tigrinus (Yamakagashi snake) is a rear-fanged colubrid snake present throughout Russia and Asia. Its venom induces life-threatening hemorrhagic symptoms severe disseminated intravascular coagulation with fibrinolytic phenotype. R. antivenom manufactured by the immunization of horses to neutralize has risk adverse events such as anaphylaxis serum sickness disease. It should be used when benefit greater than effects; however, its efficacy not been well evaluated. Although our...
