The current outbreak of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has been associated with an apparent increased risk congenital microcephaly. We describe a case pregnant woman and her fetus infected ZIKV during the 11th gestational week. fetal head circumference decreased from 47th percentile to 24th between 16 20 weeks gestation. RNA was identified in maternal serum at 21 At 19 gestation, substantial brain abnormalities were detected on ultrasonography magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) without presence...
Antibody-screening methods to detect severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) need be validated. We evaluated SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgA ELISAs in conjunction with the EUROLabworkstation (Euroimmun, Lübeck, Germany). Overall specificities were 91.9% 73.0% for ELISAs, respectively. Of 39 disease patients, 13 positive 11 alone at sampling. IgGs IgAs respectively detected a median of 12 days after symptom onset.
Bombali virus (genus Ebolavirus) was identified in organs and excreta of an Angolan free-tailed bat (Mops condylurus) Kenya. Complete genome analysis revealed 98% nucleotide sequence similarity to the prototype from Sierra Leone. No Ebola virus-specific RNA or antibodies were detected febrile humans area who reported contact with bats.
The newly identified tick-borne Alongshan virus (ALSV), a segmented Jingmen group flavivirus, was recently associated with human disease in China. We report the detection of ALSV RNA Ixodes ricinus ticks south-eastern Finland. Screening sera from patients suspected for encephalitis tick virus-like and antibodies revealed no cases. presence common European warrants further investigations on its role as pathogen.
Abstract Background Enteroviruses (EV) cause yearly outbreaks with severe infections, particularly in young children. This study investigates EV circulation, age-distribution, and clinical presentations Europe from 2018-2023. Methods Aggregated data were requested ECDC National Focal Points for Surveillance European Non-Polio Enterovirus Network. Data included detection month, specimen type, age-group, presentation the ten most commonly reported types per year. Findings Twenty-eight...
Exposure, risks and immunity of healthcare workers (HCWs), a vital resource during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, warrant special attention. HCWs at Helsinki University Hospital, Finland, filled in questionnaires provided serum samples for SARS-CoV-2-specific antibody screening by Euroimmun IgG assay March–April 2020. Positive/equivocal findings were confirmed Abbott microneutralization tests. Positivity two three assays or RT-PCR indicated Covid-19 case (CoV+). The rate CoV(+) was 3.3% (36/1095)...
Abstract The study of the microbiome data holds great potential for elucidating biological and metabolic functioning living organisms their role in environment. Metagenomic analyses have shown that humans, along with example, domestic animals, wildlife arthropods, are colonized by an immense community viruses. current Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) heightens need to rapidly detect previously unknown viruses unbiased way. increasing availability metagenomic this era next-generation...
In 2018, an upsurge in echovirus 30 (E30) infections was reported Europe. We conducted a large-scale epidemiologic and evolutionary study of 1,329 E30 strains collected 22 countries Europe during 2016-2018. Most cases affected persons 0-4 years age (29%) 25-34 (27%). Sequences were divided into 6 genetic clades (G1-G6). (53%) sequences belonged to G1, followed by G6 (23%), G2 (17%), G4 (4%), G3 (0.3%), G5 (0.2%). Each clade encompassed unique individual recombinant forms; G1 displayed >2...
SARS-CoV-2 RNA can be detected in respiratory samples for weeks after onset of COVID-19 disease. Therefore, one the diagnostic challenges PCR positive cases is differentiating between acute disease and convalescent phase. The presence nucleocapsid antigen serum plasma patients has been demonstrated previously. Our study aimed to characterize analytical specificity sensitivity an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Salocor Antigen Quantitative Assay Kit© (Salofa Ltd, Salo, Finland)) detection...
Primary diagnosis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is based on detection virus RNA in nasopharyngeal swab samples. In addition, analysis humoral immunity against SARS-CoV-2 has an important role viral diagnostics and seroprevalence estimates. We developed optimized enzyme immunoassays (EIA) using nucleoprotein (N), S1 receptor binding domain (RBD) the spike protein, N proteins from SARS, Middle East (MERS), 4 low-pathogenic human CoVs. Neutralizing...
In the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam, rats are commonly traded wet markets and sold live for food consumption. We investigated seroprevalence to selected groups of rodent-borne viruses among human populations with high levels animal exposure co-located rodent populations. The indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT) was used determine seropositivity representative reference strains hantaviruses (Dobrava virus [DOBV], Seoul [SEOV]), cowpox virus, arenaviruses (lymphocytic...
Previously identified only in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and southeastern Kenya, Bombali virus-infected Mops condylurus bats were recently found »750 km away western Kenya. This finding supports the role of M. as hosts potential for virus circulation across bats' range sub-Saharan Africa.
Background. Herpesviruses could contribute to the lung epithelial injury that initiates profibrotic responses in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).Methods. We identified herpesviral DNA from IPF and control tissue using a multiplex PCR-and microarray-based method. Active infection was detected by standard methods, inflammatory cell subtypes were with specific antibodies. Patients underwent transplantation monitored for signs of infection.Results. A total 11/12 samples positive Epstein-Barr...
The laboratory confirmation of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection, and the differential diagnosis from other flavivirus infections such as dengue (DENV), often requires use several diagnostic test types. Cross-reactions secondary complicate serological specific viral RNA detection assays are needed for confirming diagnosis. aim this study was to validate molecular methods diagnosing ZIKV infection. This included evaluation a RT-qPCR assay diagnostics that previously set up research compare ZIKV,...
In northern Europe, rodent populations display cyclic density fluctuations that can be correlated with the human incidence of zoonotic diseases they spread. During peaks, field voles (Microtus agrestis) become one most abundant species in yet little is known viruses host. We screened 709 voles, trapped from 14 sites over 3 years, for antibodies against four rodent-borne, potentially or virus groups—hantaviruses, lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCMV), Ljungan (LV), and orthopoxviruses (OPV)....
The symptoms observed in children with human parechovirus (HPeV) infection vary widely from asymptomatic or mild gastrointestinal infections to more severe central nervous system and sepsis-like disease. Many of the disease associations are, however, only suggestive. In this study, we examined connection between HPeV acute otitis media, lower respiratory suspected infections. An specific real-time reverese transcriptase polymerase chain reaction was used detect RNA. We analyzed altogether 200...
The acute changes in the canine bowel wall during and after superior mesenteric arterial (SMA) occlusion were studied. Mitochondrial damage was indicated histochemical analyses by diminished succinyl dehydrogenase activity before any appeared lysosomal acid phosphatase. These findings corroborated thoracic duct lymph, where glutamic rose that of appearance high lactic (LDH) activities lymph as early 15 minutes suggested besides mitochondria cellular membranes damaged ischemia. During oxygen...
( N Engl J Med. 2016;374:2142–2151) Zika virus (ZIKV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, is associated with intrauterine or perinatal transmission and increased risk of having newborn microcephaly.
