We report a draft sequence for the genome of domesticated silkworm (Bombyx mori), covering 90.9% all known genes. Our estimated gene count is 18,510, which exceeds 13,379 genes reported Drosophila melanogaster. Comparative analyses to fruitfly, mosquito, spider, and butterfly reveal both similarities differences in content.

The Taming of the Silkworm Silkworms, Bombyx mori , represent one few domesticated insects, having been over 10,000 years ago. Xia et al. (p. 433 published online 27 August) sequenced 29 domestic and 11 wild silkworm lines identified genes that were most likely to be selected during domestication. These those enhance silk production, reproduction, growth. Furthermore, silkworms probably only once from a large progenitor population, rather than on multiple occasions, as has observed for other animals.

Human utilization of the mulberry–silkworm interaction started at least 5,000 years ago and greatly influenced world history through Silk Road. Complementing silkworm genome sequence, here we describe a mulberry species Morus notabilis. In 330-Mb assembly, identify 128 Mb repetitive sequences 29,338 genes, 60.8% which are supported by transcriptome sequencing. Mulberry gene appear to evolve ~3 times faster than other Rosales, perhaps facilitating species' spread worldwide. The tree is among...

The tobacco cutworm, Spodoptera litura, is among the most widespread and destructive agricultural pests, feeding on over 100 crops throughout tropical subtropical Asia. By genome sequencing, physical mapping transcriptome analysis, we found that gene families encoding receptors for bitter or toxic substances detoxification enzymes, such as cytochrome P450, carboxylesterase glutathione-S-transferase, were massively expanded in this polyphagous species, enabling its extraordinary ability to...

We designed and constructed a genome-wide microarray with 22,987 70-mer oligonucleotides covering the presently known predicted genes in silkworm genome, surveyed gene expression multiple tissues on day 3 of fifth instar. Clusters tissue-prevalent tissue-specific that are differentially expressed different were identified, they reflect well major functions molecular level. The data presented this study provide new resource for annotating genome.

A wound dressing with excellent hydrophilicity, high porosity, good mechanical property, and antimicrobial activities holds great potential for healing. Sericin, a natural protein from silkworm cocoon, is particularly attractive the development of skin-repairing materials because it biocompatible biodegradable. Here, we reported green strategy in situ biomimetic synthesis silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) within sericin/poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel. AgNPs were synthesized by redox property...

The SilkDB is an open-access database for genome biology of the silkworm (Bombyx mori). Since draft sequence was completed and first released 5 years ago, we have collaborated with other groups to make much remarkable progress on research, such as completion a new high-quality assembly well construction genome-wide microarray survey gene expression profiles. To accommodate these genomic data house more comprehensive information, reconstructed web interfaces. In version (v2.0) SilkDB, updated...

Abstract Background Chemosensory systems play key roles in the survival and reproductive success of insects. Insect chemoreception is mediated by two large diverse gene superfamilies, chemoreceptors odorant binding proteins (OBPs). OBPs are believed to transport hydrophobic odorants from environment olfactory receptors. Results We identified a family OBP-like genes silkworm genome characterized their expression using oligonucleotide microarrays. A total forty-four OBP were annotated, number...

Microsporidian Nosema bombycis has received much attention because the pébrine disease of domesticated silkworms results in great economic losses silkworm industry. So far, no effective treatment could be found for pébrine. Compared to other known parasites, N. can unusually parasitize a broad range hosts. To gain some insights into underlying genetic mechanism pathological ability and host expansion this parasite, comparative genomic approach is conducted. The genome two antheraeae (an...
