We used epitaxially grown monodisperse nanowire arrays to measure cellular forces with a spatial resolution of 1 μm. Nerve cells were cultured on the array and calculated from displacement tips. The measurements done in situ live using confocal microscopy. Forces down 15 pN measured neural growth cones, showing that this method can be study fine details growth-cone dynamics.

Here we present a new approach to diffraction imaging of amyloid fibrils, combining free-standing graphene support and single nanofocused X-ray pulses femtosecond duration from an free-electron laser. Due the very low background scattering mutual alignment filaments, tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) filaments protofibrils is obtained 2.7 Å 2.4 resolution in patterns, respectively. Some TMV patterns exhibit asymmetry that indicates presence limited number axial rotations XFEL focus. Signal-to-noise...

Engineered nanoparticles have been under increasing scrutiny in recent years. High aspect ratio such as carbon nanotubes and nanowires raised safety concerns due to their geometrical similarity asbestos fibers. III–V epitaxial semiconductor are expected be utilized devices LEDs solar cells will thus available the public. In addition, clean-room staff fabricating characterizing at risk of exposure, emphasizing importance investigating possible toxicity. Here we investigated effects gallium...

X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) create new possibilities for structural studies of biological objects that extend beyond what is possible with synchrotron radiation. Serial femtosecond crystallography has allowed high-resolution structures to be determined from micro-meter sized crystals, whereas single particle coherent imaging requires development the resolution a few tens nanometers. Here we describe an intermediate approach: XFEL assemblies helical symmetry. We collected scattering...

Semiconductor nanowires are widely used to interface living cells, and numerous nanowire-based devices have been developed manipulate or sense cell behavior. We have, however, little knowledge on the nature of cell-nanowire interface. Laminin is an extracellular matrix protein promoting attachment growth. Here, we a method based fluorescence microscopy measured relative amount laminin adsorbed compared flat surfaces. The per surface area up 4 times higher 55nm diameter gallium phosphide...

Abstract Despite widespread public interest in the health impact of exposure to microwave radiation, studies influence radiation on biological samples are often inconclusive or contradictory. Here we examine frequencies 3.5 GHz, 20 GHz and 29 growth microtubules, which nanotubes that perform diverse functions eukaryotic cells. Since microtubules highly polar can extend several micrometres length, they predicted be sensitive non-ionizing radiation. Moreover, it has been speculated tubulin...

Cytochrome c oxidase (C O) is part of the respiratory chain and contributes to electrochemical membrane gradient in mitochondria as well many bacteria, it uses energy released reduction oxygen pump protons across an energy-transducing biological membrane. Here, we use time-resolved serial femtosecond crystallography study structural response active site upon flash photolysis carbon monoxide (CO) from reduced heme a 3 ba -type C O. The X-ray crystallography station I911-2 at MAXLab II (Lund, Sweden) has been adapted to enable difference small- and wide-angle scattering (SAXS/WAXS) data be recorded. Modifications the beamline included a customized flow cell, motorized cell holder, helium cone, beam stop, sample stage delivery system. This setup incorporated external devices such as infrared lasers, LEDs reaction mixers induce conformational changes in macromolecules. platform was evaluated through proof-of-principle...
