Background and Purpose Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) needs to be distinguished from Alzheimer’s disease (AD) because of important differences in patient management outcome. Severe cardiac sympathetic degeneration occurs DLB, but not AD, offering a potential system for biological diagnostic marker. The primary aim this study was investigate the accuracy, ante-mortem differentiation probable DLB imaging ligand 123I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) which binds noradrenaline reuptake site,...
Abstract Community‐based surveys were performed in seven rural areas Japan to investigate the prevalence of dementia and illnesses causing dementia. A total 5431 elderly subjects selected based on census data from 1 October 2009. In total, 3394 participants examined (participation rate: 62.5%), 768 cases 529 mild cognitive impairment identified. Of dementia, Alzheimer's disease was most frequent (67.4%), followed by vascular (18.9%), with Lewy body (4.6%), mixed (4.2%) other illnesses. The...
Background and purpose We previously reported the usefulness of iodine-123 metaiodobenzylguanidine ( 123 I-MIBG) myocardial scintigraphy for differentiation dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) from Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in a cross-sectional multicentre study. The aim this study was, by using reassessed diagnosis after 3-year follow-up, to evaluate diagnostic accuracy I-MIBG probable DLB AD. Methods undertook follow-up 133 patients or possible AD who had undergone at baseline. An independent...
Abstract Background: This multicentre open‐label trial examined the efficacy and safety of traditional Japanese medicine, or Kampo yokukansan (YKS), for behavioural psychological symptoms dementia (BPSD) in patients with Lewy bodies. Methods: Sixty‐three bodies probable BPSD (M : W, 30 33; mean age, 78.2 ± 5.8 years) were enrolled treated YKS 4 weeks. Results: Significant improvements Neuropsychiatric Inventory scores (mean decrease, 12.5 points; P < 0.001) Zarit Burden Interview‐Japanese...

Background and Objectives
Epidemiologic evidence has shown that social isolation, a low frequency of contact with others, is associated the risk dementia late-life depressive symptoms. Therefore, we hypothesized may be involved in brain atrophy, symptoms play some role this relationship. We aimed to evaluate association between volumes various regions assess extent which mediate these relationships from large population-based multisite cohort study.
Methods
Dementia-free...
We identify the prevalence and genetic features of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) in Yonago Sakaiminato, western Japan. From information registered records questionnaires, definite or candidate CMT patients were examined. Eleven families with 19 (7 female 12 male) identified was 10.8 per 100,000 April 2000. 6 showed a Thr124Met mutation MPZ gene, 2 duplication PMP22 gene suggested no abnormalities found families. To occurrence mildly affected CMT, exhaustive region-matched family study necessary.
Abstract Background: The increasing number of patients with dementia in Japan, together the rapid aging society, is currently considered to have a substantial impact on Japan's medical, economic and sociological systems. Therefore, longitudinal estimation changes prevalence based accurate diagnostic evaluation has important implications. Methods: We undertook three separate epidemiological studies long‐term changes, 10 years apart (1980, 1990 2000), an elderly population using identical...

We examined the expression of presenilin 1 (PS-1) mRNA in cultured skin fibroblasts taken from living patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and human brains postmortem AD by RT-PCR analysis. The donors consisted 28 cases 19 neurological patient without dementia (CTL). came 17 23 CTL. found that PS-1 levels were significantly higher than those CTL (p < 0.0001). Moreover, we These findings suggest high may play an important role developing examination be helpful for diagnosis AD.
Abstract Altruistic social activity, such as giving support to others, has shown protective benefits on dementia risk and cognitive decline. However, the pathological mechanism is unclear. In present study, we investigated association between altruistic activity brain regional gray matter. Furthermore, explore psychological interplay in tested mediating effect of depressive symptoms We performed a cross-sectional voxel-based morphology (VBM) analysis including 8 695 old adults (72.9 ± 6.1...
We report on a Japanese family with Charcot Marie Tooth disease (CMT) the Thr124Met mutation in peripheral myelin protein zero (MPZ) gene.Based clinical study, we investigated MPZ gene by direct sequence analysis and polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis.Genotyping of four symptomatic members showed that one member severe symptoms was homozygous, while other three were heterozygous. The heterozygous cases clinicopathologically determined to be axonal...
