Introduction Schistosomiasis remains a public health major problem and little is known in many areas, mainly Sub-Saharan Africa Objectives To assess the burden risk factors of schistosomiasis intestinal parasitic helminthes children Cubal, Angola, to compare different diagnostic approaches for urinary under field conditions. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted. Urine faeces samples school were microscopically studied. random sample obtained from an alphabetically arranged list...
Strongyloides stercoralis is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence S. other intestinal parasites identify risk factors for infection with a rural area Angola. A cross-sectional conducted school-age children (SAC) Cubal, questionnaire collecting clinical epidemiological variables used, two stool samples were collected. concentration technique (Ritchie) detection larvae migration (Baermann) performed. Of 230 SAC, 56.1% female mean...
The objective of this study was to describe the screening for imported diseases among an immigrant population. This retrospective observational all adult immigrants attended at Tropical Medicine Unit Vall d'Hebron Teaching Hospital from September 2007 March 2010. strategy adjusted by symptoms, country origin, and length residence in Europe. Overall, 927 patients were included. median age 34.5 years, 42.1% male. A diagnosis made 419 (45.2%) patients. most frequent diagnoses Chagas disease,...
Schistosomiasis is one of the most important neglected tropical diseases, with a great impact on public health and more than 200,000 deaths annually. Schistosoma haematobium causes urinary tract (UT) morbidity. Since schistosomiasis morbidity control programs focus children older 5 years, pre-school age (PSAC) not well known. We conducted cross-sectional study in Cubal (Angola) among 245 PSAC objective evaluating prevalence S. infection, intensity associated For this purpose, urine filtration...
To understand Zika virus (ZIKV) dynamics in fluids of infected individuals and the risk sexual transmission.Prospective study at two centres Spain. Patients with probable or confirmed diagnosis ZIKV infection were clinically followed up, fluid samples collected from saliva, serum, urine semen vaginal secretion following protocol. Non-traveller-sexual partners offered to participate. From January 2016 December 2016, we included a total 11 traveller patients six contacts. Six male, median age...
Abstract Objective To evaluate the performance of Rapid‐Heat LAMP ellet assay in field conditions for diagnosis urogenital schistosomiasis an endemic area Cubal, Angola, and to assess reproducibility a reference laboratory. Methods A total 172 urine samples from school‐age children were tested microhaematuria, microscopic detection Schistosoma haematobium eggs DNA detection. Urine stored basic equipped Field‐ tests performed with without prior extraction samples, results read by turbidity...
The Chikungunya virus (CKIKV) is currently present in America. Travel between America and Europe particularly intense one of the main vectors CHIKV, Aedes albopictus, well established Mediterranean basin. We describe a series imported cases that could originate European outbreak. We retrospectively studied CHIKV originating diagnosed last year three Tropical Medicine Units Barcelona International Health Program Catalan Institute (PROSICS). Clinical, microbiological epidemiological data were...
Abstract Background Ticks and tick-borne diseases constitute a real threat for the livestock industry, which is increasing in Angola. In addition, ticks are vectors of zoonoses public health concern, scarce information available from this country. an effort to contribute prevention zoonotic infectious affecting humans animals, molecular screening certain tick-related microorganisms collected on cattle Angola was performed under ‘One Health’ scope. Methods Cubal (Benguela Province, Angola)...
Although the Republic of Angola is one 14 countries figuring in three high tuberculosis (TB) burden country lists, true multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) situation unknown.Patients aged 16 years with a diagnosis pulmonary were prospectively enrolled from June 2014 to July 2015. Sputum samples collected for culture and drug susceptibility testing all patients, Xpert® MTB/RIF previously treated patients new whose sputum remained smear-positive after 2 months treatment.A total 422 included;...
Abstract Background The migration over the Mediterranean has become one of deadliest sea voyages in last few years. NGO Open Arms works area since 2015, with objectives protecting and reporting human rights at sea. This paper aims to give an overview on characteristics health conditions rescued people by Central Mediterranean. Methods A descriptive retrospective population study was conducted, including who were from distress 1st July 2016 31st December 2018. Results In this period time...
Abstract Background Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by trematodes of the genus Schistosoma. Schistosoma haematobium causes urogenital schistosomiasis (UGS), chronic characterized pathology tract leading to potentially severe morbidity for which treatment poorly standardized. We conducted survey in TropNet centres on clinical presentations and management strategies complicated (cUGS). Methods reviewed records patients seen at over 20-year timespan (January 2001–December...
Treatment for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) is associated with adverse events (AE). Patients treated an MDR TB regimen in Hospital Nossa Senhora da Paz, Cubal, Angola, were prospectively enrolled from May 2013 to July 2015. Baseline characteristics, AE, and clinical microbiological outcomes recorded. A total of 216 patients 179 (82.9%) developed at least one AE. The most common AE elevation liver enzymes (46.8% patients), elevated creatinine (44.4% ototoxicity (40.7% patients)....
Background Urogenital schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma haematobium is highly endemic in the municipality of Cubal Angola. Currently, diagnosis based on observation S . eggs urine samples microscopy but this method has low sensitivity. Few studies have been performed using molecular techniques high-prevalence areas for detection The objective study to evaluate usefulness real-time PCR as a diagnostic technique urogenital among preschool-age children and its correlation with morbidity...
Finding Dicrocoelium dendriticum eggs in human feces is exceptional and there are few prevalence data available. True infection occurs after accidental ingestion of ants containing metacercariae spurious through the consumption infected animal liver. Differential diagnosis between true pseudo-infections performed stool examination a diet free In addition, microscopy can help to differentiate type infection. We report six cases, all from sub-Saharan Africa, detection this fluke at Tropical...
Urinary schistosomiasis causes damage to the urological system. Ultrasound is a method that detects burden of secondary disease, individually and in epidemiological studies. In this study, Schistosoma haematobium-associated urinary tract pathology analyzed before after treatment short period time. Seventy children who had previously participated an study on city Cubal, Angola, also performed ultrasound between August 2013 February 2014 were cited 6-8 months later assess possible reinfection...
