Abstract Early predictions forecasted large numbers of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) cases and associated deaths in Africa. To date, Africa has been relatively spared. Various hypotheses were postulated to explain the lower than anticipated impact on public health However, contribution pre-existing immunity is yet be investigated. In this study, presence antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) nucleocapsid (N) proteins pre-pandemic samples from Africa, Europe,...
ABSTRACT Psychiatric disorders frequently occur in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS); however, limited reports are available on these comorbidities. We aimed to investigate the relationships among MS, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. Methods: One hundred thirty two relapsing-remitting MS were evaluated using Expanded Disability Status Scale, Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSI), Hospital Anxiety Scale. Results: A hierarchical regression...
ABSTRACT The expanding therapeutic arsenal in multiple sclerosis (MS) has allowed for more effective and personalized treatment, but the choice management of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) is becoming increasingly complex. In this context, experts from Brazilian Committee on Treatment Research Multiple Sclerosis Neuroimmunology Scientific Department Academy Neurology have convened to establish Consensus MS, based their understanding that neurologists should be able prescribe MS DMTs...
We report on nine patients (eight cases of MS and one case NMOSD) who presented a disease relapse in close temporal association with their first AZD1222 vaccination dose against COVID-19. These had been stable for median period six years, no evidence activity change medication. After 13 days (7 to 25 days) from vaccination, they developed new increased disability lesions magnetic resonance imaging. Although this may be rare, it might an adverse event AZD1222.
To evaluate the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) proviral DNA load among asymptomatic HTLV-I-infected carriers and patients with HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), real time PCR using TaqMan probes for pol gene was performed in two million peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The albumin internal genomic control MT2 were used as positive control. results are reported copies/10,000 PBMC, detection limit 10 copies. A total of 89 subjects...
Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. NMOSD starting after age 50 years considered a "late onset" (LO-NMOSD) and seems to be particularly aggressive. The objective this paper present series 37 Brazilian patients with LO-NMOSD. Retrospective data collection from medical records LO-NMOSD seen at 14 specialized units. ratio women men in sample was 4.3 1. were followed up for median period 4 years. Sex, onset, ethnic...

ABSTRACT Migraine adds to the burden of patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS). The ID-migraine is a useful tool for screening migraine, and Disability Assessment questionnaire can evaluate disease burden. aim present study was assess presence migraine in with MS. Methods: Patients diagnosed MS attending specialized units were invited answer an online survey if they also experienced headache. Results: included 746 complete responses There 625 women 121 men, 69% all aged between 20...
There is increasing evidence that neurofilament light chain (NF-L) can be considered as a biomarker for neuro-axonal damage. This polypeptide released into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood, where it quantified. The concentration of NF-L elevated in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) psychiatric disorders. We aimed to investigate levels CSF from treated MS relationship depression or anxiety. study involved three groups: control group (individuals without inflammation),...
Fingolimod is a new and efficient treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS). The drug administration requires special attention to the first dose, since cardiovascular adverse events can be observed during initial six hours of fingolimod ingestion. present study consisted review data on 180 patients with MS receiving dose fingolimod. rate bradycardia in these was higher than that clinical trials very strict inclusion criteria patients. There were less 10% cases requiring attention, but no fatal...
BACKGROUND: Fampridine is a broad-spectrum voltage-dependent potassium channel blocker that enhances synaptic transmission. The drug has been shown to be able ameliorate conduction in demyelinated axons, thereby leading improved gait patient
Dissection of cervical arteries constitutes a medical emergency. Although relatively rarely, activities classified as sports and recreation may be cause arterial dissection independently neck or head trauma. The purpose the present paper was to series cases cerebrum-cervical in individuals during soon after practice these activities.Retrospective data on patients with related recreation.Forty-one were identified. most frequently affected vessel vertebral artery. A large variety had temporal...
Alexithymia is a personality trait characterized by difficulties identifying and describing feelings. Some researchers describe high levels of alexithymia among patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) but literature data on this subject are scarce. The objective the present study was to characterize findings in MS.This cross-sectional case-control included 180 MS matched control group. Data for disease duration, number demyelinating relapses degree neurological disability, as assessed Expanded...
The Scientific Department of Neuroimmunology the Brazilian Academy Neurology (DCNI/ABN) and Committee for Treatment Research in Multiple Sclerosis Neuroimmunological Diseases (BCTRIMS) provide recommendations this document vaccination population with demyelinating diseases central nervous system (CNS) against infections general severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes COVID-19. We emphasize seriousness current situation view spread COVID-19 our country....
Depression/anxiety (D/A) occurs in up to 50% of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Proinflammatory cytokines induce classical symptoms depression. Activation the inflammatory response also triggers production indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), which catabolizes tryptophan, amino acid precursor serotonin and melatonin. It has been suggested that IDO is link between immune serotonergic systems. This study aimed quantify levels pro-inflammatory anti-inflammatory patients with MS depression,...
