Abstract Introduction The increasing prevalence of multiresistant Gram-negative strains in intensive care units (ICUs) has recently rekindled interest colistin, a bactericidal antibiotic that was used the 1960s for treatment infections caused by bacilli. We conducted present observational study to evaluate efficacy intravenous colistin critically ill patients with sepsis bacilli resistant all other antibiotics. Patients and method Critically antibiotics exception were treated six-bed ICU...
Colistin penetration into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was studied in five critically ill adult patients receiving colistin methanesulfonate for infections by multiresistant gram-negative bacilli. concentrations were determined paired serum and CSF samples, with latter taken lumbar puncture, exception of one patient an external ventriculostomy. CSF-to-serum ratios (0.051 to 0.057) all study coincided at sampling times. The low level (5%) suggests inadequate bactericidal CSF.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented major challenges for critical care facilities worldwide. Infections which develop alongside or subsequent to viral pneumonitis are a challenge under sporadic and conditions; however, data have suggested that patterns of these differ between other pneumonitides. This secondary analysis aimed explore co-infection intensive unit-acquired infections (ICU-AI) the relationship use corticosteroids in large, international cohort critically ill patients.
Available data on colistin pharmacokinetics in patients undergoing continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) are limited. Our aim was to study critically ill treated with methane sulphonate for Gram-negative sepsis and venovenous haemodiafiltration acute failure. Three were studied. The dose administered at the discretion of attending physician all cases lower than that recommended individuals intact function. Colistin intravenously over 30 min, blood samples collected from each patient...
The optimal hemoglobin (Hb) threshold to trigger red blood cell transfusions (RBCT) in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients is unclear. This study evaluated the impact of liberal versus restrictive transfusion strategies on neurological outcome with SAH. a pre-planned secondary analysis "TRansfusion Strategies Acute brain INjured Patients" (TRAIN) study. We included all SAH from original that were randomized receive RBCT when Hb levels dropped below 9 g/dL (liberal group) or 7 (restrictive...
Background/Objectives: Individuals with Crohn’s disease often experience challenges at work and are confronted the decision of whether to disclose their health status in workplace. This study explores disclosure workplace factors influencing choices among individuals Greece. Methods: The examined how demographic characteristics affected a non-visible disability, reasons behind disclosure, associated experiences. Results: sample consisted 152 disease. Although 52.6% participants had disclosed...
Background: Platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) alone or combined with other regenerative materials was previously studied in human periodontal endosseous defects. There are no sufficient data evaluating to what extent the addition of demineralized freeze‐dried bone allograft (DFDBA) PRP may enhance effectiveness PRP. The aim this randomized, double‐masked, controlled clinical trial compare autologous + DFDBA Methods: Twenty‐four proximal defects 24 patients severe chronic periodontitis were randomly...
Background: Macrophage activation-like syndrome (MALS) and complex immune dysregulation (CID) often underlie acute respiratory distress (ARDS) in COVID-19. We aimed to investigate the effect of personalized immunotherapy on clinical improvement critical Methods: In this open-label prospective trial, 102 patients with ARDS by SARS-CoV-2 were screened for MALS (ferritin >4,420 ng/mL) CID ≤4,420 ng/mL low human...
Background: Varicella pneumonia is a serious complication of primary varicella infection in adults that often results respiratory failure and death. Objective: To analyze the clinical laboratory manifestations patients admitted to our intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: Retrospective study on treated ICU with diagnosis during period 15 years. We recorded age, gender, smoking habits, findings, arterial blood gases, chest radiograph,...
Shock states are characterized by impaired tissue perfusion and microcirculatory alterations, which directly related to outcome. Skin can be noninvasively evaluated using skin laser Doppler (SLD), which, when coupled with a local thermal challenge, may provide measure of reactivity. We hypothesized that this microvascular reactivity would in patients circulatory shock marker severity. first blood flow (SBF) SLD on the forearm palm 18 healthy volunteers select site maximal response....
Abstract Background: Excess mortality associated with the COVID-19 pandemic has been reported in many countries. Our study aim was to examine excess deaths Cyprus during as compared average documented pre-pandemic period. Methods and Findings: We performed exploratory statistical analysis trends of using data tabulations graphical representations. Publicly available by Ministry Health European Statistical Office (Eurostat) were used analyze over a 7-year period (2016-2022). Information...
Background/Objectives: Individuals with diabetes often experience discrimination and barriers at work are confronted the challenge of deciding whether to disclose their health status in workplace. This study explores disclosure The research was based on a previously developed questionnaire. Methods: Two hundred five persons who were employed Greece participated research. Results: majority participants chose disclose. Demographic characteristics influenced decision, type employment sector...
