The pro-oncogenic transcription factor STAT3 is constitutively activated in a wide variety of tumours that often become addicted to its activity, but no unifying view core function determining this widespread STAT3-dependence has yet emerged. We show here active acts as master regulator cell metabolism, inducing aerobic glycolysis and down-regulating mitochondrial activity both primary fibroblasts STAT3-dependent tumour lines. As result, cells are protected from apoptosis senescence while...

Abstract The vast majority of cancers exhibit increased glucose uptake and glycolysis regardless oxygen availability. This metabolic shift leads to an enhanced production lactic acid that decreases extracellular pH (pHe), a hallmark the tumor microenvironment. In this way, dysregulated pHe upregulated metabolism are linked tightly their relative assessment may be useful gain understanding underlying biology. Here we investigated noninvasively in vivo correlation between 18F-FDG values murine...

We demonstrate a Fourier spectrometer that uses intense ultrashort laser pulses. By exciting the 6S(1/2) - 8S(1/2) two-photon transition in atomic cesium vapor, we are able to measure small hyperfine splitting of excited state. This technique, combining high spectral resolution with peak intensities available femtosecond systems, may offer intriguing opportunities for study multiphoton transitions and spectroscopy short-wavelength region.

SUMMARY A simple, rapid, chemical method to differentiate Mycobacterium from Nocardia is described. After saponification of bacteria in 2·5 % (w/v) KOH methanol + benzene (1:1, v/v) at 37° for one day, crude mycolic acids mycobacteria were precipitated by addition an equal volume ethanol ethereal solution extracted lipids. Mycobacteria gave large amounts white precipitates (about 10 mg/g wet whole bacteria) m.p. between 45° and 70°, whereas nocardias no precipitate or very small (less than 2...
