The pro-oncogenic transcription factor STAT3 is constitutively activated in a wide variety of tumours that often become addicted to its activity, but no unifying view core function determining this widespread STAT3-dependence has yet emerged. We show here active acts as master regulator cell metabolism, inducing aerobic glycolysis and down-regulating mitochondrial activity both primary fibroblasts STAT3-dependent tumour lines. As result, cells are protected from apoptosis senescence while...
Abstract The vast majority of cancers exhibit increased glucose uptake and glycolysis regardless oxygen availability. This metabolic shift leads to an enhanced production lactic acid that decreases extracellular pH (pHe), a hallmark the tumor microenvironment. In this way, dysregulated pHe upregulated metabolism are linked tightly their relative assessment may be useful gain understanding underlying biology. Here we investigated noninvasively in vivo correlation between 18F-FDG values murine...
Iterative image reconstruction algorithms for positron emission tomography (PET) require a sophisticated system matrix (model) of the scanner. Our aim is to set up such model offline YAP-(S)PET II small animal imaging tomograph in order use it subsequently with standard ML-EM (maximum-likelihood expectation maximization) and OSEM (ordered subset fully three-dimensional reconstruction. In general, can be obtained analytically, via measurements or Monte Carlo simulations. this paper, we...
At the Department of Physics University Pisa, Italy, a new and fully engineered version YAP-(S)PET small animal scanner has been recently installed. The is able to perform both PET SPECT studies on animals. made up four heads: each one composed 4/spl times/4 cm/sup 2/ YAlO/sub 3/:Ce (or YAP:Ce) matrix 20/spl times/20 elements, 2/spl times/2/spl times/25 mm/sup 3/ each, coupled Position Sensitive Photomultiplier (PS-PMT) (Hamamatsu R2486). modules are positioned rotating gantry. switching...
Possible cardiac repair by adult stem cell transplantation is currently hampered poor viability and delivery efficiency, uncertain differentiating fate in vivo, the needs of ex vivo expansion, consequent delay after onset heart attack. By aid magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, immunohistochemistry, we show that injection a hyaluronan mixed ester butyric retinoic acid (HBR) into infarcted rat hearts afforded substantial cardiovascular recovery myocardial performance....
We demonstrate a Fourier spectrometer that uses intense ultrashort laser pulses. By exciting the 6S(1/2) - 8S(1/2) two-photon transition in atomic cesium vapor, we are able to measure small hyperfine splitting of excited state. This technique, combining high spectral resolution with peak intensities available femtosecond systems, may offer intriguing opportunities for study multiphoton transitions and spectroscopy short-wavelength region.
SUMMARY A simple, rapid, chemical method to differentiate Mycobacterium from Nocardia is described. After saponification of bacteria in 2·5 % (w/v) KOH methanol + benzene (1:1, v/v) at 37° for one day, crude mycolic acids mycobacteria were precipitated by addition an equal volume ethanol ethereal solution extracted lipids. Mycobacteria gave large amounts white precipitates (about 10 mg/g wet whole bacteria) m.p. between 45° and 70°, whereas nocardias no precipitate or very small (less than 2...
Obesity and diabetes associate with neurodegeneration. Brain glucose BDNF are fundamental in perinatal development. is related to brain health, food intake metabolism. We characterized the relationship between glycemia and/or utilization (by 18 FDG-PET during fasting loading), obesity 4-weeks old (pre-obese) 12-weeks (obese) Zucker fa/fa rats, their age-matched fa/+ controls. In 75 human infants, we assessed cord blood levels, appetite regulating hormones, body weight maternal factors. Young...
New fluorinated, arylsulfone-based matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitors containing carboxylate as the zinc binding group were synthesized radiotracers for positron emission tomography. Inhibitors characterized by Ki MMP-2 in nanomolar range and a fair selectivity MMP-2/9/12/13 over MMP-1/3/14. Two of these compounds obtained (18)F-radiolabeled form, with radiochemical purity yield suitable preliminary studies mice xenografted human U-87 MG glioblastoma. Target density xenografts was...
A systematic investigation of the average multiplicities light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments emitted in peripheral semiperipheral collisions is presented as a function beam energy, violence collision, system. The data have been collected with FIASCO setup reactions $^{93}\mathrm{Nb}+^{93}\mathrm{Nb}$ at $(17,23,30,38)A$ MeV $^{116}\mathrm{Sn}+^{116}\mathrm{Sn}$ $(30,38)A$ MeV. midvelocity emission has separated from projectile-like fragment. This last component appears to...

To exploit the YAP-(S)PET II scanner intrinsic capability of both PET and SPECT imaging, we have implemented simultaneous PET/SPECT dual imaging modality. Two opposing heads, equipped with collimator set in anticoincidence, independently acquire single events (SPECT mode), other pair heads detects coincidence (PET mode). During acquisition, a high energy (PET) low (SPECT) radiotracer are placed inside Field View (FOV). Since thickness (2 cm) is optimized to stop only photons, down-scatter...
A bidimensional pixelated dosimeter composed of two polycrystalline Chemical Vapour Deposited diamond films, 2.5 × cm2 each placed aside, has been manufactured so as to obtain a detector with 2 mm pitch over total active area 5.0 cm2. We performed the dosimetric characterization an Elekta Synergy linear accelerator using 6 MV photon beam. Uniformity maps, rise and fall times, signal repeatability, dependence on dose rate, linearity sensitivity show that device is suitable for evaluations in...
Peripheral and semi-peripheral collisions have been studied in the system 93Nb+93Nb at 38 AMeV. The evaporative midvelocity components of light charged particle intermediate mass fragment emissions carefully disentangled. In this way it was possible to obtain average amount not only charge mass, but also energy, pertaining emission, as a function an impact parameter estimator. This emission has very important role overall balance reaction, accounts for large fraction emitted more than half...
Nonlinear photoelectric emission from Cu and W is investigated by subpicosecond laser pulses. Using a pump probe technique, total-yield correlation measurements are obtained without space-charge saturation. The effects of the heating conduction electrons induced pulses shown, considering peak to background contrast ratio experimental trace. present analysis clarifies consequences transient nonequilibrium temperature difference between lattice on trace, confirming for presence thermally...
