The goal of the International HapMap Project is to determine common patterns DNA sequence variation in human genome and make this information freely available public domain. An international consortium developing a map these across by determining genotypes one million or more variants, their frequencies degree association between them, samples from populations with ancestry parts Africa, Asia Europe. will allow discovery variants that affect disease, facilitate development diagnostic tools,...

We analyzed molecular data on 2,579 tumors from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) of four gynecological types plus breast. Our aims were to identify shared and unique features, clinically significant subtypes, potential therapeutic targets. found 61 somatic copy-number alterations (SCNAs) 46 significantly mutated genes (SMGs). Eleven SCNAs 11 SMGs had not been identified in previous TCGA studies the individual tumor types. functionally estrogen receptor-regulated long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs)...

The Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) brought together international breast cancer experts to discuss in low resource countries (LRCs) and identify common concerns reviewed this consensus statement. There continues be a lack of public health care professionals' awareness the importance early detection cancer. Hypertension, the leading single cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, is a growing public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Few studies have estimated compared burden hypertension across different SSA populations. We conducted cross-sectional analysis blood pressure data collected through cohort study four countries, to estimate prevalence pre-hypertension, hypertension, identify factors associated with hypertension. Participants were from five population groups defined by...

Abstract Laboratory and animal studies suggest that dietary flavonols may reduce breast cancer risk but there are limited epidemiological studies. We computed flavonol intakes from data collected by validated food frequency questionnaires in 1991 1995 90,630 women the Nurses Health Study II. Using multivariate relative risks (RR) 95% confidence intervals (95% CI), we evaluated association of intake with who were premenopausal aged between 26 46 years at baseline 1991. During 8 follow‐up,...

There has been a remarkable paucity of evidence for an association between diet and acne. Our previous studies suggest that there is milk intake teenage This prospective cohort study to evaluate relationship. We studied 6,094 girls, aged 9-15 years in 1996, who reported dietary on up three food frequency questionnaires from 1996 1998. Presence severity acne was assessed by questionnaire 1999. computed multivariate prevalence ratios (PR) 95 percent confidence intervals After accounting age at...

Cancer is an increasingly important public health problem in developing countries, including Africa [1]. As and professional awareness of the cancer has grown, so interest pattern disease presentation, its epidemiology treatment outcome. To date, however, there been limited research about breast Africa. In absence systematic population-based registration, most information come from small clinical pathology case series bias inherent these types studies influenced current understanding...

Objectives To explore the barriers to cervical cancer screening, focusing on religious and cultural factors, in order inform group-specific interventions that may improve uptake of screening programmes. Design We conducted four focus group discussions among Muslim Christian women Nigeria. Setting Discussions were two hospitals, one South West other North Central region Participants 27 22 over age 18, with no diagnosis cancer. Results Most participants had heard about except Western who never...

In this study, we evaluated the association between high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) and vaginal microbiome. Participants were recruited in Nigeria April August 2012. Vaginal bacterial composition was characterized by deep sequencing of barcoded 16S rRNA gene fragments (V4) on Illumina MiSeq HPV identified using Roche Linear Array® genotyping test. We used exact logistic regression models to evaluate community state types (CSTs) microbiota hrHPV infection, weighted UniFrac distances...
