ABSTRACT Chagas’ disease is an emerging public health problem in areas where the not endemic. Treatment with benznidazole has shown efficacy acute stage of disease, but its chronic remains controversial, and unwanted side effects are more frequent severe adults than children. This study describes profile a cohort Trypanosoma cruzi -infected patients European country.

We performed a prospective screening for Trypanosoma cruzi infection in 1350 Latin American pregnant women and their offspring Barcelona, Spain. The rate of seroprevalence was 3.4%, 7.3% the newborns were infected. Routine management programs maternity wards may be warranted.

American Trypanosomiasis or Chagas disease (CD) is a neglected that affects Latin people worldwide. Two old antiparasitic drugs, benznidazole and nifurtimox, are currently used for specific CD treatment with limited efficacy in chronic infections frequent side effects. New drugs needed patients as well immunosuppressed patients, whom the risk of reactivation life-threatening. We describe case systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) required immunosuppression to control autoimmune process. It was...

The extent of cryptic leishmaniasis in blood donors from a Spanish endemic area, (Eivissa Island) was studied using various immunological and parasitological methods. Sera 656 were analysed: 16 (2.4%) positive by ELISA 50 (7.6%) Western blot. Peripheral mononuclear cells (PBMC) buffy coat (BC) samples, analyzed culture nested-PCR. DNA L. infantum amplified 27 (22.1%) 122 PBMC. Parasites isolated 3 (4.5%) 67 BC cultures the strains identified as zymodeme MON-28. No parasites PBMC culture....

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) caused by Leishmania infantum is a zoonotic disease endemic throughout the Mediterranean basin. The existence of asymptomatic human infection entails risk transmission blood transfusion. The prevalence was studied in 1437 donors from Balearic Islands (Majorca, Formentera, and Minorca) using immunologic (Western blot [WB] delayed-type hypersensitivity [DTH]), parasitologic (culture), molecular (nested polymerase chain reaction [PCR]) methods. In addition, efficiency...

SUMMARY The domestic dog is the reservoir host of Leishmania infantum , causative agent zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis endemic in Mediterranean Europe. Targeted control requires predictive risk maps canine (CanL), which are now explored. We databased 2187 published and unpublished surveys CanL southern A total 947 western met inclusion criteria for analysis, including serological identification infection (504, 369 dogs tested 1971–2006). ABSTRACT Chagas disease has spread to areas that are nonendemic for the with human migration. Since no single reference standard test is available, serological diagnosis of chronic requires at least two tests. New-generation techniques have significantly improved accuracy by use a large mixture recombinant antigens different detection systems, such as chemiluminescence. The aim present study was assess overall new-generation kit, Architect (cutoff, ≥1 sample relative light units/cutoff value...

Abstract Purpose Screening for dysphagia at the intensive care unit (ICU) soon after extubation can prevent aspiration, pneumonia, lower mortality, and shorten re-feeding interval. This study aimed to modify Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS), which was developed acute stroke patients, validate it extubated patients in ICU. Methods In this prospective study, forty-five who had been intubated least 24 h were recruited consecutively earliest extubation. The modified GUSS-ICU performed twice by...
