Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged as the cause of a global pandemic in 2019–2020. In March 2020, New York City became epicenter United States for pandemic. On 27 Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni) at Bronx Zoo developed cough and wheezing with subsequent inappetence. Over next week, an additional two Amur tigers altaica) same building three lions leo krugeri) separate also ill. The index case was anesthetized diagnostic workup. Physical examination...

Abstract Missions into Deep Space are planned this decade. Yet the health consequences of exposure to microgravity and galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) over years-long missions on indispensable visceral organs such as kidney largely unexplored. We performed biomolecular (epigenomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, epiproteomic, metabolomic, metagenomic), clinical chemistry (electrolytes, endocrinology, biochemistry) morphometry (histology, 3D imaging, miRNA-ISH, tissue weights) analyses using...

Protein quality control is crucial for cellular homeostasis, involving the heat shock response, ubiquitin-proteasome system, and autophagy-lysosome pathway. Central to these systems are chaperone homologs protein 70 (HSP70) cognate (HSC70), which manage folding degradation. This study investigated impact of C-terminal phosphorylation HSP70 on its interaction with co-chaperone CHIP (C-terminus HSC70 interacting protein), an E3 ligase that ubiquitinates substrates Using both cell-free...

Cardiac disease is a common cause of mortality in many primates housed zoological settings. At the Bronx Zoo, between 2007 and 2018, there were ten incidences sudden cardiac death adult male geladas (Theropithecus gelada), none which showed premonitory signs. Due to concerns occult fatal arrhythmogenic events, complete examinations performed three clinically normal, geladas. Examinations included thoracic radiographs, transthoracic echocardiograms (echo), 12-lead ECG, continuous ECG...

Past research has supported the idea that exercise is beneficial for mind and cognitive functions. Further, imaging neurotransmitter studies have shown how acute can increase white matter monoamines in brain, thus improving cognition. On this basis, it was inferred exercise, specifically long-term will improve an individual’s performance. To determine this, college-aged subjects were assessed with baseline reaction time simultaneous amplitude discrimination tests. They subsequently...

Allergic dermatitis was diagnosed in a 25-yr-old female greater one-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) and her 6-yr-old offspring by skin biopsy, intradermal testing (IDST), allergen-specific serum IgE testing. Dam presented with seasonal, erosive, ulcerative affecting the face, legs, trunk starting at 6 2 yr of age, respectively. IDST performed caudal pinnal base using 61 regionally specific allergens. Specific allergen responses were detected Heska's Equine ALLERCEPT® Allergen Panel....
