This updates the Strategies Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections Acute Care Hospitals Hand Hygiene, published 2014. expert guidance sponsored by Society for Healthcare Epidemiology (SHEA). Autochthonous human cases of leishmaniasis in the United States are uncommon. We report three new cutaneous and details a previously reported case, all outside known endemic range Texas. Surveys for enzootic rodent reservoirs sand fly vectors were conducted around residences case-patients during summer 2006; female Lutzomyia anthophora flies collected at north Texas southeast Oklahoma residence case-patient, indicating proximity suitable vector. Urban sprawl, climatologic variability, or...
, a multidrug-resistant yeast, can spread rapidly in ventilator-capable skilled-nursing facilities (vSNFs) and long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs). In 2018, laboratory serving LTACHs southern California began identifying species of
Abstract This document introduces and explains common implementation concepts frameworks relevant to healthcare epidemiology infection prevention control can serve as a stand-alone guide or be paired with the “SHEA/IDSA/APIC Compendium of Strategies Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections in Acute Care Hospitals: 2022 Updates,” which contain technical guidance for specific healthcare-associated infections. article focuses on broad behavioral socio-adaptive suggests ways that teams,...
Abstract A nationwide tuberculosis outbreak linked to a viable bone allograft product contaminated with Mycobacterium was identified in June 2021. Our subsequent investigation 73 healthcare personnel new latent infection following exposure the product, recipients, surgical instruments, or medical waste.

In July 2021, the Virginia Department of Health notified CDC a cluster eight invasive infections with Burkholderia stabilis, bacterium in cepacia complex (BCC), among hospitalized patients at hospital A. Most had undergone ultrasound-guided procedures during their admission. Culture MediChoice M500812 nonsterile ultrasound gel used A revealed contamination unopened product B. stabilis that matched whole genome sequencing (WGS) strains found patients. and A, collaboration partner health care...
This study addresses the development of a modified early warning system (MEWS) to predict hospital admissions from emergency departments (EDs) using 2010 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS). A MEWS score was created for each patient in NHAMCS data set vital signs recorded at admission. Multiple logistic regression analyses indicated that every 1 unit increase score, patients were 33% more likely be admitted further care even after controlling demographics. Females 19%...
In Brief Learn about a new set of core practices focusing on infection prevention and control. These eight should be embedded into every aspect nursing care nurse's professional development plan.
Abstract Background Bacillus cereus is a ubiquitous gram-positive rod-shaped bacterium that can cause sepsis and neuroinvasive disease in patients with acute leukemia or neutropenia. Methods A single-center retrospective review was conducted to evaluate leukemia, positive blood cerebrospinal fluid test results for B cereus, abnormal neuroradiographic findings between January 2018 October 2022. Infection control practices were observed, environmental samples obtained, dietary case-control...
In 2017, the CDC released a set of Core Practices focusing on infection prevention and control relevant for care delivered in all settings. These eight address foundational elements practice should be embedded into every aspect nursing part nurse's professional development plan.
During June 2017-November 2019, a total 36 patients with carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa harboring Verona-integron-encoded metallo-β-lactamase were identified in city western Texas, USA. A faucet contaminated the organism, through environmental sampling, specialty care room was likely source for infection subset of patients.
Between April 2020 and May 2021, the Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) awarded more than $40 billion to health departments nationwide COVID-19 prevention response activities. One of identified priorities this investment was improving infection control (IPC) in nursing homes.CDC developed a virtual course train new less experienced public staff core healthcare IPC principles application CDC guidance homes. From October August led training sessions 12 cohorts using pretraining...
Since the initial publication of A Compendium Strategies to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections in Acute Care Hospitals 2008, prevention healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) has continued be a national priority. Progress healthcare epidemiology, infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and implementation science research led improvements our understanding effective strategies for HAI prevention. Despite these advances, HAIs continue affect ∼1 every 31 hospitalized patients,...
Abstract Background Patients in long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) and skilled nursing facilities with ventilator units (VSNFs) are at high risk for Candida auris colonization; among patients colonized this emerging pathogen, 5%–10% develop invasive disease >45% mortality. In September 2018, a California LTACH-affiliated laboratory began enhanced C. surveillance by classifying species of isolated from routine urine specimens. February 2019, the first known Southern case was detected...
Abstract With this survey, we investigated healthcare-associated invasive mold infection (HA-IMI) surveillance and air sampling practices in US acute-care hospitals. More than half of surveyed facilities performed HA-IMI sampling. was more commonly academic versus nonacademic facilities. case definitions strategies varied widely among respondents.
