This report characterizes a cohort of hospitalized adults with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Georgia which black patients were overrepresented and one four had no recognized risk factors for severe COVID-19.
The first reported U.S. case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was detected in January 2020 (1).As June 15, 2020, approximately 2 million cases and 115,000 COVID-19-associated deaths have been the United States.*Reports patients hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 infection (the virus that causes COVID-19) describe high proportions older, male, black persons (2-4).Similarly, when comparing catchment area populations or nonhospitalized COVID-19 patients, underlying conditions, including...
2019 (COVID-19) pandemic resulted in approximately 7,900,000 aggregated reported cases and 216,000 deaths the United States.*Among COVID-19-associated to national case surveillance during February 12-May 18, persons aged ≥65 years members of racial ethnic minority groups were disproportionately represented (1).This report describes demographic geographic trends National Vital Statistics System † (NVSS) May 1-August 31, 2020, by 50 states District Columbia.During this period, 114,411...
In December 2019, a cluster of cases pneumonia emerged in Wuhan City central China's Hubei Province. Genetic sequencing isolates obtained from patients with identified novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) as the etiology (1). As February 4, 2020, approximately 20,000 confirmed had been China and an additional 159 23 other countries, including 11 United States (2,3). On January 17, CDC U.S. Department Homeland Security's Customs Border Protection began health screenings at airports to identify ill...

As of October 11, 2022, a total 26,577 monkeypox cases had been reported in the United States.* Although most are self-limited, lesions that involve anatomically vulnerable sites can cause complications. Ocular occur when Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is introduced into eye (e.g., from autoinoculation), potentially causing conjunctivitis, blepharitis, keratitis, and loss vision (1). This report describes five patients who acquired ocular during July-September 2022. All received treatment with...
Tinea is a common, highly contagious, superficial infection of the skin, hair, or nails caused by dermatophyte molds.*During past decade, an epidemic severe, antifungalresistant tinea has emerged in South Asia because rapid spread Trichophyton indotineae, † novel species; likely been driven misuse and overuse topical antifungals corticosteroids § (1,2).T. indotineae infections are transmissible characterized widespread, inflamed, pruritic plaques on body (tinea corporis), crural fold, pubic...
As of March 7, 2023, a total 30,235 confirmed and probable monkeypox (mpox) cases were reported in the United States,† predominantly among cisgender men§ who recent sexual contact with another man (1). Although most mpox during current outbreak have been self-limited, severe illness death (2-4). During May 10, 2022-March 38 deaths persons or mpox¶ (1.3 per 1,000 cases) to CDC classified as mpox-associated (i.e., was listed contributing causal factor). Among deaths, 94.7% occurred men (median...
We describe a case of tinea genitalis in an immunocompetent woman Pennsylvania, USA. Infection was caused by Trichophyton indotineae potentially acquired through sexual contact. The fungus resistant to terbinafine (first-line antifungal) but improved with itraconazole. Clinicians should be aware T. as potential cause antifungal-resistant genital lesions.
During June 2021, the highly transmissible† B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant of SARS-CoV-2, virus that causes COVID-19, became predominant circulating strain in United States. U.S. pediatric COVID-19-related hospitalizations increased during July-August 2021 following emergence Delta and peaked September 2021.§ As May 12, CDC recommended COVID-19 vaccinations for persons aged ≥12 years,¶ on November 2, were 5-11 years.** To date, clinical signs symptoms, illness course, factors contributing to...
In-person learning benefits children and communities (1).Understanding the context in which transmission of SARS-CoV-2, virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 , occurs schools is critical to improving safety inperson learning.During December 1, 2020-January 22, 2021, Cobb Douglas Public Health (CDPH), Georgia Department (GDPH), CDC investigated SARS-CoV-2 eight public elementary a single school district.COVID-19 cases* among educators students were either self-reported or identified by...
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted and exacerbated long-standing inequities in the social determinants of health (1-3). Ensuring equitable access to effective therapies is essential reducing disparities. Molnupiravir (Lagevrio) nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (Paxlovid) are oral antiviral agents at preventing hospitalization death patients with mild moderate who high risk* for progression severe when initiated within 5 days symptom onset. These medications received Emergency Use Authorization from...
Data on monkeypox in children and adolescents aged <18 years are limited (1,2). During May 17–September 24, 2022, a total of 25,038 cases were reported the United States,† primarily among adult gay, bisexual, other men who have sex with (3). this period, CDC U.S. jurisdictional health departments identified Monkeypox virus (MPXV) infections 83 persons years, accounting for 0.3% cases. Among 28 0–12 monkeypox, 64% boys, most had direct skin-to-skin contact an was caring child household...
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated fungal infections cause severe illness, but comprehensive data on burden are lacking. We analyzed US National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) to characterize burden, temporal trends, and demographic characteristics of persons dying during the COVID-19 pandemic.Using NVSS's January 2018-December 2021 Multiple Cause Death Database, we examined numbers age-adjusted rates (per 100 000 population) deaths due infection by pathogen, association,...
Monkeypox (mpox) cases in the 2022 outbreak have primarily occurred among adult gay, bisexual, and other men who sex with (MSM); however, populations also been affected (1). To date, data on mpox cisgender women pregnant persons limited. Understanding transmission these is critical for prevention. In addition, persons, virus can be transmitted to fetus during pregnancy or neonate through close contact after birth (2-5). Adverse outcomes, including spontaneous abortion stillbirth, reported...
Azole resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus is a One Health threat, where azole fungicide exposure compromises the efficacy of medical azoles. The use recently authorized ipflufenoquin, which shares its mode-of-action with new antifungal olorofim, underscores need for risk assessment dual antifungals.
Using a large US hospital database, we describe 192 Candida auris‒associated hospitalizations during 2017-2022, including 38 (20%) C. auris bloodstream infections. Hospitalizations involved extensive concurrent conditions and healthcare use; estimated crude mortality rate was 34%. These findings underscore the continued need for public health surveillance containment efforts.
Abstract Background Public health officials are responding to an outbreak of fungal meningitis among patients who received procedures under epidural anesthesia at 2 clinics (River Side Surgical Center and Clinica K-3) in Matamoros, Mexico, during 1 January 13 May 2023. Hospitalizations involving fungal infections increased 8.5% each year in the United States during 2019-2021. During 2020-2021, patients hospitalized with COVID-19-associated had higher (48.5%) in-hospital mortality rates than those non-COVID-19-associated (12.3%). Improved disease surveillance is needed, particularly respiratory virus pandemics.
SummaryA multinational outbreak of nosocomial fusarium meningitis occurred among immunocompetent patients who had undergone surgery with epidural anesthesia in Mexico. The pathogen involved a high predilection for the brain stem and vertebrobasilar arterial system was associated mortality from vessel injury. Effective treatment options remain limited; vitro susceptibility testing organism suggested that it is resistant to all currently approved antifungal medications United States. To...
Incorrect use of topical antifungals and antifungal-corticosteroid combinations is likely contributing to the global emergence spread severe antimicrobial-resistant superficial fungal infections, which have recently been detected in United States.Understanding prescribing patterns an initial step establishing promoting recommended these medications.Using 2021 Medicare Part D data, CDC examined prescription volumes, rates, costs for (including combination antifungalcorticosteroid...
