Using functional MRI (fMRI), we have studied the changes induced by performance of a complex sequential motor task in cortical areas six akinetic patients with Parkinson's disease and normal subjects. Compared subjects, exhibited relatively decreased fMRI signal rostral part supplementary area (SMA) right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, as previously shown PET studies. Concomitantly, same significant bilateral relative increase primary sensorimotor lateral premotor inferior parietal caudal...
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficiency of mitoxantrone in multiple sclerosis. METHODS: Forty two patients with confirmed sclerosis, selected as having a very active disease on clinical and MRI criteria were randomised to receive either (20 mg intravenously (IV) monthly) methylprednisolone (1 g iv or alone over six months. In steroid group five dropped out due severe exacerbation. RESULTS: Blinded analysis data showed significantly more no new enhancing lesions compared group, (90% v 31%, P...
Brain atrophy measured by magnetic resonance structural imaging has been proposed as a surrogate marker for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Studies on large samples are still required to determine its practical interest at individual level, especially with regards capacity anatomical disentangle confounding role cognitive reserve in One hundred and thirty healthy controls, 122 subjects mild impairment amnestic type 130 disease patients were included from ADNI database followed up...
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to analyze the usefulness preoperative language functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), by correlating fMRI data with intraoperative cortical stimulation results for patients brain tumors. METHODS Naming and verb generation tasks were used, separately or in combination, 14 right-handed tumors left hemisphere. obtained analyzed SPM software, two standard analysis thresholds (P < 0.005 then P 0.05). registered a frameless stereotactic neuronavigational...
Serial gadolinium enhanced MRI of the brain detects much clinically silent disease activity in early relapsing-remitting and secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS), thus has an important role monitoring effects therapy. Based on proceedings a recent Commission European Communities (CEC) workshop review literature, guidelines are presented for using to monitor treatment trials MS. The consider: A) system techniques; B) patient selection; C) trial design; D) analysis results. Priorities...
To integrate 3D MR spectroscopy imaging (MRSI) in the treatment planning system (TPS) for glioblastoma dose painting to guide simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). For sixteen patients, we have simulated three types of dosimetry plans, one conventional plan 60-Gy conformational radiotherapy (3D-CRT), IMRT and 72-Gy SIB-IMRT. All MRSI metabolic maps were into TPS, using normalization with color-space conversion threshold-based segmentation. The...
This large prospective cohort study recruited from 34 UK fetal medicine units to evaluate the use of prenatal whole genome sequencing in 610 fetuses with a structural abnormality detected on antenatal ultrasound scanning and no chromosomal abnormality. Overall, diagnostic genetic mutation was identified 8.5% fetuses, more commonly those multisystem anomalies (15.4%), skeletal or cardiac (11.1%). The lowest yield, only 3.2%, isolated increased nuchal translucency first trimester.
A crystallization screening process is presented that was developed for a small academic laboratory. Its underlying concept to combine sparse-matrix with systematic in minimum number of conditions. The screen the cherry-picked combination conditions from Joint Center Structural Genomics (JCSG) extended using other screens. aim maximize coverage parameter space no redundancy. screen, pH-, anion- and cation-testing (PACT) aims decouple components each condition provide information about...
Crystallization trials at the Division of Structural Biology in Oxford are now almost exclusively carried out using a high-throughput workflow implemented Protein Production Facility. Initial crystallization screening is based on nanolitre-scale sitting-drop vapour-diffusion experiments (typically 100 nl protein plus reservoir solution per droplet) which use standard kits and 96-well plates. For 294 K barcoded plates entered into an automated storage system with fully integrated imaging...
Abstract [ 123 I]Metaiodobenzylguanidine ([ I]MIBG) cardiac scintigraphy could be helpful to differentiate Parkinson's disease (PD) from multiple system atrophy (MSA), demonstrating that, in PD with autonomic failure but not MSA, there is a myocardial postganglionic sympathetic dysfunction. To investigate whether this method more sensitive than standard testing detect early involvement of efferent, we analyse MIBG uptake 8 patients normal (nondysautonomia group, NDPD) comparison 10 abnormal...
T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images of the pituitary gland and sella turcica routinely demonstrate a region high signal intensity in neurohypophysis. High-resolution MR imaging studies 200 subjects with normal or abnormal were analyzed. The hyperintensity was found about 90% healthy patients microadenoma, only 43% macroadenoma, 12% empty sellae. absent several functional anatomic abnormalities hypothalamic-hypophyseal axis. It is concluded that posterior lobe present most individuals...
We evaluated the effects of early posttraumatic hypoxia on neurologic function, magnetic resonance images (MRI), brain tissue specific gravities, and cerebral blood flow (CBF) in head-injured rats. By itself, an hypoxic insult (PaO2 40 mm Hg for 30 min) had little effect any measure function. After temporal fluid-percussion impact injury, however, significantly increased morbidity. Of rats subjected to (4.9 +/- 0.3 atm) plus hypoxia, 71% motor weakness contralateral side 24 h after while...
Data pooled from three individual trials, with average stable fly populations of 2.58, 5.21, and 7.07 per leg, indicated a significant reduction in weight gains decrease feed efficiency among feedlot cattle. Graphs data previously reported data, converted to percentage loss on basis, the economic threshold for flies (cost treatment versus number flies)is less than two leg feeder heifers.
The first objective of the study was to determine whether functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal correlated with motor performance at different stages poststroke recovery. second assess existence prognostic factors for recovery in early MR images. Eight right-handed patients pure deficit secondary a lacunar infarct localized on pyramidal tract were included. This concerned moderately impaired and handgrip strength finger-tapping speed. fMRI task calibrated flexion-extension...
Abstract We sought to define the influence of ageing in clinical, cognitive, and quality‐of‐life outcomes after subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN‐DBS) Parkinson's disease (PD). performed motor assessment (UPDRS), mood tests, quality life evaluation (PDQ‐39) on PD patients before surgery, 12 24 months after, we recorded adverse events. The variations these parameters surgery were correlated with age using regression statistical tests. Cerebral bleeding risk was evaluated by a...

To assess the importance of intercenter variations when measuring magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) in brain, six European centers measured MTR normal white matter. ranged from 9 to 51 percent units (25 sequences). The effective flip angle saturating pulse divided by repetition time (ENRsat degrees/msec) was a good predictor (MTR = 3.25 ENRsat).
Abstract Many human tumors contain variant cells that, unlike their normal counterparts, possess indefinite proliferative potential in vitro. However, little is known of the relevance these immortal to carcinomas vivo. To investigate immortality a tumor system, we established cultures from different stages head and neck squamous carcinoma (SCC‐HN). All neoplastic were transformed because they showed very low cornification surface or suspension culture partially completely resistant...
