Abstract Background Escherichia coli is an opportunistic pathogen which colonizes various host species. However, to what extent genetic lineages of E. are adapted or restricted specific hosts and the genomic determinants such adaptation restriction poorly understood. Results We randomly sampled isolates from four countries (Germany, UK, Spain, Vietnam), obtained five species (human, pig, cattle, chicken, wild boar) over 16 years, both healthy diseased hosts, construct a collection 1198...

Pathogens frequently associated with multi-drug resistant (MDR) phenotypes, including extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) and Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from horses admitted to horse clinics, pose a risk for animal patients personnel in clinics. To estimate current rates of colonization, total 341 equine were screened carriage zoonotic indicator pathogens at hospital admission. Horses showing clinical signs colic (n = 233) or open wounds 108)...

Introduction Venous thromboembolic events (VTEs) like deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism are frequent complications in (neuro) critical ill patients. Anticoagulation for VTE after space-occupying brain infarction is a therapeutic dilemma. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the frequency clinically apparent patients with acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) due large vessel occlusion (LVO), its treatment, and rate complications. Methods Patients first AIS LVO were assigned...

The zoonotic pathogen Campylobacter jejuni is among the leading causes of foodborne diseases worldwide. While C. colonises many wild animals and livestock, persistence mechanisms enabling bacterium to adapt host species' guts are not fully understood. In order identify putative determinants influencing preferences distinct lineages, bootstrapping based on stratified random sampling combined with a k-mer-based genome-wide association was conducted 490 genomes from diverse origins in Germany...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most frequent causes stroke. Several randomized trials have shown that prolonged monitoring increases detection AF, but effect on reducing recurrent cardioembolism, ie, ischemic stroke and systemic embolism, remains unknown. We aim to evaluate whether a risk-adapted, intensified heart rhythm with consequent guideline conform treatment, which implies initiation oral anticoagulation (OAC), leads reduction cardioembolism.Find-AF 2 randomized, controlled,...

Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is becoming less exclusively a health care-associated CDI (HA-CDI). The incidence of community-associated (CA-CDI) has increased over the past few decades. It been postulated that asymptomatic toxigenic C. (TCD)-colonized patients may play role in transfer between hospital setting and community. Thus, to investigate relatedness across community settings, we compared characteristics symptomatic host pathogens from these two settings 3-year period. Two...

Abstract Background Campylobacter jejuni is a zoonotic pathogen that infects the human gut through food chain mainly by consumption of undercooked chicken meat, raw cross-contaminated ready-to-eat or milk. In last decades, C. has increasingly become most common bacterial cause for food-born infections in high income countries, costing public health systems billions euros each year. Currently, different whole genome sequencing techniques such as short-read bridge amplification and long-read...
