Mosquito-borne West Nile virus (WNV) infection is benign in most individuals but can cause encephalitis <1% of infected individuals. We show that ∼35% patients hospitalized for WNV disease (WNVD) six independent cohorts from the EU and USA carry auto-Abs neutralizing IFN-α and/or -ω. The prevalence these antibodies highest with (∼40%), silent as low general population. odds ratios WNVD relative to those without them population range 19.0 (95% CI 15.0–24.0, P value <10–15) only...

To date, there is no severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-(SARS-CoV-2)-specific prognostic biomarker available. We assessed whether SARS-CoV-2 cycle threshold (Ct) value at diagnosis could predict novel CoronaVirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity, clinical manifestations, and six-month sequelae. Hospitalized outpatient cases were randomly sampled from the diagnoses of March 2020 data collected 6 months by interview regional database for COVID-19 emergency. Patients stratified...

The rate of chronic drooling in children older than 4 years is 0.5%, but it rises to 60% those with neurological disorders. Physical and psychosocial consequences lead a reduction the quality Life (QoL) affected patients; however, problem remains under-recognized under-treated. We conducted an Italian consensus through modified Delphi survey discuss current treatment paradigm pediatric patients disorders. After reviewing literature, board 10 experts defined some statements be administered...

Abstract This study compared standard of care testing (SOC) to BioFire® FilmArray® Pneumonia plus Panel (PN ). PN detects 15 bacteria with semiquantitative log bin values, 7 antibiotic resistance markers, three atypical (AB), and eight viral classes directly from bronchoalveolar lavage-like specimens (BLS) sputum-like (SLS). Fifty-two laboratories 13 European countries Israel tested 1234 BLS 1242 SLS SOC. Detection rates number pathogens/samples were for pathogens. values SOC quantities...

Abstract We measured severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 spike protein subunits S1/S2 antibodies by using capillary electrophoresis and a chemiluminescence immunoassay for 5,444 active healthcare workers in Italy. Seroprevalence was 6.9% higher among participants having contact with patients. Seroconversion not observed 37/213 previously infected participants.

In patients affected by chronic hepatitis because of HBV infection, long-term suppressive therapy with nucleos(t)ides analogues in the HBeAg- has shown low effects on HBsAg titre (qHBsAg) decrease, and loss is difficult to achieve. Thus, this type main goals antiviral suppression HBV-DNA ALT normalization. We retrospectively evaluated different qHBsAg kinetics 134 treatment-naïve having same characteristics: HBeAg-, infection sustained genotype D persistently undetectable HBV-DNA. Identifying determinants of the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission in settings contagion is fundamental to inform containment strategies. We assessed SARS-CoV-2 cycle threshold value (Ct) from first diagnostic nasal-pharyngeal swab symptomatic index cases and which demographic or clinical characteristics among contacts are associated with risk within households. This a retrospective prevalence study on secondary (SC) household adult randomly...

In patients with A(H1N1)pdm09 infection, severe lung involvement requiring admission to intensive care units (ICU) has been reported. Mutations at the hemagglutinin (HA) receptor binding site (RBS) have associated increased virulence and disease severity, representing a potential marker of critical illness. To assess contribution HA-RBS variability in critically ill patients, virus from adult infection admitted ICU for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support (ECMO) during influenza season...

Background Central nervous system (CNS) may be infected by several agents, resulting in different presentations and outcomes. Analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers could helpful to differentiate specific conditions setting an appropriate therapy. Methods Patients presenting with signs symptoms were enrolled if, before receiving a diagnostic lumbar puncture, signed written informed consent. We analyzed CSF indexes blood–brain barrier permeability (CSF serum albumin ratio or CSAR),...

The aims of this study were to characterize new SARS-CoV-2 genomes sampled all over Italy and reconstruct the origin evolutionary dynamics in Europe between February June 2020. cluster analysis showed only small clusters including < 80 Italian isolates, while most strains intermixed whole tree. Pure observed mainly after lockdown distancing measures adopted. Lineage B B.1 spread late January early 2020, from China Veneto Lombardy, respectively. B.1.1 (20B) probably evolved within central...

Abstract Background Elite controllers are able to control viral replication without antiretroviral therapy. Exceptional elite do not show disease progression for more than 25 years. Different mechanisms have been proposed and several elements of both innate adaptive immunity implicated.
