A new method to determine the spin tune is described and tested. In an ideal planar magnetic ring, tune-defined as number of precessions per turn-is given by ν(s)=γG (γ Lorentz factor, G gyromagnetic anomaly). At 970 MeV/c, deuteron spins coherently precess at a frequency ≈120 kHz in Cooler Synchrotron COSY. The deduced from up-down asymmetry deuteron-carbon scattering. time interval 2.6 s, was determined with precision order 10^{-8}, 1×10^{-10} for continuous 100 s accelerator cycle. This...
The Technical Design for the COMET Phase-I experiment is presented in this paper. an at J-PARC, Japan, which will search neutrinoless conversion of muons into electrons field aluminium nucleus ($\mu-e$ conversion, $\mu^- N \to e^- N$); a lepton flavor violating process. experimental sensitivity goal process $3.1\times10^{-15}$, or 90 % upper limit branching ratio $7\times 10^{-15}$, factor 100 improvement over existing limit. expected number background events 0.032. To achieve target and...
We observe a deuteron beam polarization lifetime near 1000 s in the horizontal plane of magnetic storage ring (COSY). This long spin coherence time is maintained through combination bunching, electron cooling, sextupole field corrections, and suppression collective effects current limits. record required for search an intrinsic electric dipole moment on at statistical sensitivity level approaching 10^{-29} e cm.
This paper presents the successful application of a phase-lock feedback system to maintain resonance condition radio frequency (rf) spin rotator (specifically, an rf Wien filter) with respect 120 kHz precession in Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) storage ring. Real-time monitoring and filter signal allows relative phase between two be stabilized at arbitrary setpoint. The compensates for deviations by adjusting and/or as needed. With this method, variation demand standard deviation...
This Letter reports the successful use of feedback from a spin polarization measurement to revolution frequency $0.97\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}/c$ bunched and polarized deuteron beam in Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) storage ring order control both precession rate ($\ensuremath{\approx}121\text{ }\mathrm{kHz}$) phase horizontal component. Real time synchronization with radio (rf) solenoid made possible rotation out plane, yielding demonstration method manipulate polarization. In particular,...
The stable spin direction of polarized particles in a storage ring was determined first experimentally, through an accurate measurement the tune and its response to longitudinal magnetic fields.
We report on measurements of the differential cross section $d\ensuremath{\sigma}/d\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$ and first measurement analyzing power ${A}_{y}$ in $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(1232)$ excitation energy region reaction $pp\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{{pp}}_{s}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ where ${{pp}}_{s}$ is a $^{1}S_{0}$ proton pair. The experiment has been performed with ANKE spectrometer at COSY-J\"ulich. data reveal peak dependence forward section, minimum zero degrees its...
The proposed method exploits charged particles confined as a storage ring beam (proton, deuteron, possibly $^3$He) to search for an intrinsic electric dipole moment (EDM) aligned along the particle spin axis. Statistical sensitivities could approach 10$^{-29}$ e$\cdot$cm. challenge will be reduce systematic errors similar levels. adjusted preserve polarisation, initially parallel velocity, times in excess of 15 minutes. Large radial fields, acting through EDM, rotate polarisation from...
The vector and tensor polarizations of a deuteron beam have been measured using elastic deuteron-carbon scattering at 75.6 MeV deuteron-proton 270 MeV. After acceleration to 1170 inside the COSY ring, deuterons were checked by studying variety nuclear reactions cluster target ANKE magnet spectrometer placed an internal position storage ring. All these measurements consistent with absence depolarization during provide number secondary standards that can be used in subsequent experiments facility.
The paper describes the commissioning of experimental equipment and machine studies required for first spin-filtering experiment with protons at a beam kinetic energy 49.3 MeV in COSY. implementation low-$\ensuremath{\beta}$ insertion made it possible to achieve lifetimes ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{b}=8000\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{s}$ presence dense polarized hydrogen storage-cell target areal density...
The PAX Collaboration has successfully performed a spin-filtering experiment with protons at the COSY-ring. measurement allowed determination of spin-dependent polarizing cross section, that compares well theoretical prediction from nucleon–nucleon potential. test confirms can be adopted as method to polarize stored beam and present interpretation mechanism in terms proton–proton interaction is correct. outcome utmost importance view possible application antiprotons.
The unpolarised differential cross section and the two deuteron tensor analysing powers A xx yy of $$\vec dp \to \{ pp\} _s n$$ charge-exchange reaction have been measured with ANKE spectrometer at COSY storage ring. Using beams energies 1.2, 1.6, 1.8, 2.27GeV, data were obtained for small momentum transfers to a {pp} s system low excitation energy. results three lower are consistent impulse approximation predictions based upon current knowledge neutron-proton amplitudes. However, where...
A study of the deuteron breakup reaction $pd \to (pp)n$ with forward emission a fast proton pair small excitation energy $E_{pp}<$ 3 MeV has been performed at ANKE spectrometer COSY--J\"ulich. An exclusive measurement was carried out six proton--beam energies $T_p=$~0.6,~0.7,~0.8,~0.95,~1.35, and 1.9 GeV by reconstructing momenta two protons. The differential cross section reaction, averaged up to $8^{\circ}$ over cm polar angle total momentum $pp$ pairs, obtained. Since kinematics this...
The pp -> pi0 differential cross section has been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Juelich for pion cms angles between 0 and 15.4 degrees a proton beam energy of 0.8 GeV. selection diproton pairs an excitation E_{pp} < 3 MeV ensures that final system is dominantly in spin-singlet 1S0 state. kinematics are therefore very similar to those d pi+ but different spin isospin transitions. results will thus provide crucial extra test production models nucleon-nucleon collisions....
The cross section for inclusive multipion production in the $pp\ensuremath{\rightarrow}ppX$ reaction was measured at COSY-ANKE four beam energies, 0.8, 1.1, 1.4, and 2.0 GeV, low excitation energy final $pp$ system, such that diproton quasiparticle is $^{1}S_{0}$ state. At three higher missing-mass ${M}_{X}$ spectra show a strong enhancement ${M}_{X}$, corresponding to an Abashian-Booth-Crowe effect moves steadily larger values as increased. Despite structure looking very different 0.8...
The pp -> {pp}_s pi0 differential cross section has been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Juelich for seven proton beam energies T_p between 0.5 and 1.97 GeV. By selecting pairs an excitation energy of less than 3 MeV it is ensured that final system in 1S0 state. In region theta_{pp}^{cm} < 18 deg, data reveal a forward dip =< 1.4 GeV whereas peaking seen dependence shows broad peak 0.6-0.8 region, probably associated Delta(1232) excitation, minimum Some these features...
The proton analysing power in $\vec{p}p$ elastic scattering has been measured at small angles COSY-ANKE 796 MeV and five other beam energies between 1.6 2.4 GeV using a polarised beam. asymmetries obtained by detecting the fast ANKE forward detector or slow recoil silicon tracking telescope are completely consistent. Although results agree well with many published data MeV, also most recent partial wave solution this energy, higher lie above predictions of angles. An updated phase shift...
