Single-cell RNA sequencing of blood immune cells reveals type I interferon–associated hyper-inflammation in severe COVID-19.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 not yet has established its treatment, but convalescent plasma been expected to increase survival rates as in the case with other emerging viral infections. We describe two cases of COVID-19 treated infusion. Both patients presented pneumonia distress and showed a favorable outcome after use addition systemic corticosteroid. To our knowledge, this is first report therapy for Korea.
Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator-associated (VAP) remain important causes of morbidity mortality. Increasing antimicrobial resistance has aroused the concern failure antibiotic treatment. To determine distribution bacterial isolates HAP VAP, their patterns, impact discordant therapy on clinical outcome in Asian countriesA prospective surveillance study was conducted 73 hospitals 10 countries from 2008-2009. A total 2,554 cases with or VAP adults were enrolled 2,445 collected...
Abstract Introduction A potential independent association was recently demonstrated between high red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and the risk of all-cause mortality in critically ill patients, although mechanism underlying this relationship remains unclear. Little is known about impact changes RDW may have on survival patients. Therefore, we investigated prognostic significance during hospital stay patients with severe sepsis or septic shock. Methods We prospectively enrolled 329 who...
Sepsis, including severe sepsis and septic shock, is a major cause of morbidity mortality. Albumin C-reactive protein (CRP) are considered as good diagnostic markers for sepsis. Thus, initial CRP albumin levels were combined to ascertain their value an independent predictor 180-day mortality in patients with shock. We conducted retrospective cohort study involving 670 (>18 years old) who admitted the emergency department had received standardized resuscitation algorithm (early goal-directed...
To describe the CD4 cell count at start of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) in low-income (LIC), lower middle-income (LMIC), upper (UMIC), and high-income (HIC) countries.Patients aged 16 years or older starting cART a clinic participating multicohort collaboration spanning 6 continents (International epidemiological Databases to Evaluate AIDS ART Cohort Collaboration) were eligible. Multilevel linear regression models adjusted for age, gender, calendar year; missing counts...
Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is known to be a predictor of severe morbidity and mortality in some chronic diseases such as congestive heart failure. However, our knowledge, little about RDW patients with Gram-negative bacteremia, major nosocomial cause intra-abdominal infections, urinary tract primary bacteremia. Therefore, we investigated whether an independent Clinical characteristics, laboratory parameters, outcomes 161 bacteremia from November 2010 March 2011 diagnosed at...
Leishmania protozoan parasites (Trypanosomatidae family) are the causative agents of cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis worldwide. While these diseases associated with significant morbidity mortality, there few adequate treatments available. Sterol 14alpha-demethylase (CYP51) in parasite sterol biosynthesis pathway has been focus considerable interest as a novel drug target Leishmania. However, its essentiality donovani yet to be determined. Here, we use dual biological...
Some of the previously reported clinical isolates Elizabethkingia meningoseptica may be later named species We determined accuracy identification (with two matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time flight mass spectrometry [MALDI-TOF MS] systems and Vitek 2 GN card), relative prevalence three spp. in specimens, antimicrobial susceptibility identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Specimens for culture were collected from patients a university hospital Seoul, South Korea, between 2009...
Background Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PCP) prophylaxis is recommended for patients with CD4 counts of less than 200 cells/mm 3 . This study examines the proportion in TREAT Asia HIV Observational Database (TAHOD) receiving PCP prophylaxis, and its effect on mortality. Methods TAHOD prospective follow up had data extracted using co‐trimoxazole, dapsone or pentamidine. The was calculated each calendar year since 2003 among survival were assessed random‐effect Poisson regression models....
With the success of deep neural networks, knowledge distillation which guides learning a small student network from large teacher is being actively studied for model compression and transfer learning. However, few studies have been performed to resolve poor issue when sizes significantly differ. In this paper, we propose densely guided using multiple assistants that gradually decreases size efficiently bridge gap between networks. To stimulate more efficient network, guide each assistant...
We assessed the safety and immunogenicity of two recombinant DNA vaccines for COVID-19: GX-19 containing plasmid encoding SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, GX-19N receptor-binding domain (RBD) foldon, nucleocapsid protein. Two open-label non-randomised phase 1 trials, one other were done at hospitals in South Korea. enrolled healthy adults aged 19-49 years trial 19-54 trial. Participants who tested positive by serological testing excluded. At 4-week intervals, participants received vaccine doses...
Abstract Background Endocrine therapy resistance in hormone receptor-positive/HER2-negative (HR+/HER2−) breast cancer (BC) is a significant clinical challenge that poses several unmet needs the management of disease. This study aimed to investigate prognostic value c-MET-positive circulating tumor cells (cMET+ CTCs), ESR1 / PIK3CA mutations, and cell-free DNA (cfDNA) concentrations patients with receptor-positive (HR+) metastatic (mBC). Methods Ninety-seven HR+ mBC were prospectively...
Reports of a high frequency the transmission minority viral populations with drug-resistant mutations (DRM) are inconsistent evidence that HIV-1 infections usually arise from mono- or oligoclonal transmission. We performed ultradeep sequencing (UDS) partial gag, pol, and env genes 32 recently infected individuals. then evaluated overall per-site diversity levels, selective pressure, sequence reproducibility, presence DRM accessory (AM). To differentiate biologically meaningful those caused...
To evaluate the effects of transfusions in patients with severe sepsis and septic shock on mortality.Propensity-matched analysis a prospective observational database (April 2005 to February 2009).Twenty-two medical surgical intensive care units 12 teaching hospitals Korea. One thousand fifty-four community-acquired shock.None.Of 1,054 patients, 407 (38.6%) received blood transfusion. The mean pretransfusion hemoglobin level was 7.7 ± 1.2 g/dL. Transfused had higher 28-day in-hospital...
We recently demonstrated that mild primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is associated with increased carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and stiffness, aortic valve calcification. It unclear whether parathyroidectomy (PTX) improves these abnormalities. The purpose of this study was to determine cardiovascular abnormalities in PHPT improve PTX.Forty-four patients were studied using ultrasound transthoracic echocardiography before after PTX. Carotid IMT, plaque left ventricular mass index...
