We report a rapid increase in enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) infections, with 139 cases reported from eight European countries between 31 July and 14 October 2021. This upsurge is line the seasonality of EV-D68 was presumably stimulated by widespread reopening after COVID-19 lockdown. Most were identified September, but more are to be expected coming months. Reinforcement clinical awareness, diagnostic capacities surveillance urgently needed Europe.
Abstract There is growing interest on the potential clinical relevance of endometrial microbiome. However, insufficient attention has been given to methodology sampling. To minimize contamination, we advocate use double-lumen catheters commonly employed for embryo transfer. Endometrial fluid samples obtained from 53 women scheduled IVF were studied microbiome characterization. Control vagina these same concomitantly obtained. Samples analysed by V3–V4–V6 regions 16S rRNA gene sequencing with...
: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly spread worldwide, becoming an unprecedented public health emergency. Rapid detection of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2) suspected cases is crucial to control the infection. We aimed evaluate time length negativization from onset symptoms in healthcare workers (HCWs) with COVID-19, and significant variations cycle threshold (CT) values gene positivity (E, RdRP, N genes) among positive individuals who returned work.
The continuous emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants and subvariants poses significant public health challenges. latest designated subvariant JN.1, with all its descendants, shows more than 30 mutations in the spike gene. JN.1 has raised concerns due to genomic diversity potential enhance transmissibility immune evasion. This study aims analyse molecular characteristics JN.1-related lineages (JN.1*) identified Italy from October 2023 April 2024 evaluate neutralization activity against a subsample...
Prolonged SARS-CoV-2 infection observed in immunocompromised individuals even the presence of antiviral treatment provides opportunities for viruses to evolve immune escape and drug-resistant variants. A 72-year-old male with IgG4-related disease was admitted Emergency Department a city Hospital Milan then transferred Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico December 2023, due respiratory distress diagnosed November 2023. After 117 days since onset infection, two cycles...
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerability of immunocompromised individuals, including liver transplant recipients (LTRs), who often exhibit reduced vaccine immunogenicity. While initial doses and subsequent boosters improved immune response, LTRs were prioritized for vaccination. Studies have shown increased antibody response after each booster dose. Vaccine hesitancy, defined as delayed or refused vaccination despite availability, poses a public health challenge,...
Between September and October 2018, an enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) outbreak occurred in patients hospitalised with severe acute respiratory infection northern Italy; 21 laboratory-confirmed cases were reported. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that 16/20 of the EV-D68 sequences belonged to a divergent group within sub-clade D1. Since its upsurge, has undergone rapid evolution emergence new viral variants, emphasising need for molecular surveillance include outpatients illness.
Great expectations are placed in vaccines against COVID-19 to control the pandemic. We reviewed antibody titres a cohort of healthcare workers (HCWs) vaccinated with BNT162b2 assess influence previous infection on them. stratified results according individual history nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) and symptoms. Among 3475 HCWs highest were recorded among those infected more than 6 months before vaccination, independently symptoms, followed by less especially uninfected HCWs. Vaccination can boost...
Abstract Background and Aim Management of chronic hepatitis delta (CHD) requires reliable tests for HDV RNA quantification. The aim the study was to compare two extraction methods quantification in untreated bulevirtide (BLV)‐treated CHD patients. Methods Frozen sera from BLV‐treated patients were tested a single‐centre levels (Robogene 2.0, Roboscreen GmbH, Leipzig, Germany; LOD 6 IU/mL) with methods: manual (INSTANT Virus RNA/DNA kit; Germany) versus automated (EZ1 DSP Kit; Qiagen, Hilden,...
To assess influenza viruses (IVs) circulation and to evaluate A(H3N2) molecular evolution during the 2021-2022 season in Italy.
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a feco‐orally transmitted pathogen and one of the most common cause acute hepatitis worldwide. Recent studies in developed countries suggested that direct human‐to‐human contact such as for sexually diseases may play significant role HEV spread. The aim this study was to investigate seroprevalence HAV group MSM, including subjects HIV, Treponema infected, Milan, Italy. overall anti IgG MSM 10.2% (65/636), instead control detection rate 5.2% (15/288) ( P < 0.05);...
Summary Background Prothrombin induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist‐II (PIVKA‐II) and alpha fetoprotein (AFP) are biomarkers for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, their performance in patients with cirrhosis related to hepatitis C virus (HCV) treated direct‐acting antiviral agents (DAA) is unknown. Aim To evaluate PIVKA‐II AFP as HCC predictors DAA‐treated HCV‐related Methods In this single centre study, from chronic HCV infection a sustained virological response (SVR) DAA were...

Background and aimBulevirtide (BLV) was recently approved for the treatment of compensated chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection in Europe 2020. Understanding effect entry inhibitor BLV on HDV-host dynamics is its infancy.MethodsParticipants were 18 HDV patients under nucleos(t)ide analogue B with cirrhosis clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) who received 2 mg/day. RNA, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), surface antigen (HBsAg) measured at baseline, weeks 4, 8 every...
