Pseudomonas aeruginosa healthcare-associated infections are one of the top antimicrobial resistance threats world-wide. In order to analyze current trends, we performed a Spanish nation-wide high-resolution analysis susceptibility profiles, genomic epidemiology and resistome P. over five-year time lapse.A total 3.180 nonduplicated clinical isolates from two surveys in October 2017 2022 were analyzed. MICs 13 antipseudomonals determined by ISO-EUCAST. Multidrug (MDR)/extensively drug...
We found that 19 (10.4%) of 183 unvaccinated children hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia had autoantibodies (auto-Abs) neutralizing type I IFNs (IFN-α2 in 10 patients: IFN-α2 only three, plus IFN-ω five, and IFN-α2, IFN-β two; nine patients). Seven (3.8%) Abs at least ng/ml one IFN, whereas the other 12 (6.6%) 100 pg/ml. The auto-Abs neutralized both unglycosylated glycosylated IFNs. also detected pg/ml 4 2,267 uninfected (0.2%) 45 (2%). odds ratios (ORs) life-threatening were, therefore,...
ABSTRACT We have analyzed the prevalence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in stool specimens patients with diarrhea or other gastrointestinal alterations from Xeral-Calde Hospital Lugo City (Spain). STEC strains were detected 126 (2.5%) 5,054 cases investigated, a progressive increase incidence 0% 1992 to 4.4% 1999. O157:H7 was isolated 24 (0.5%), whereas non-O157 87 (1.7%). (after Salmonella and Campylobacter strains) third most frequently recovered enteropathogenic...
Background. The association between bacteremia by Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. (SGG) and colorectal neoplasia (CRN) is well established but the frequency of varies widely in different studies. We conducted a case-control study to assess SGG CRN.
ObjectivesHaving shown that the Xeral-Calde Hospital in Lugo (Spain) has been concerned by Escherichia coli clone O25:H4-ST131 producing CTX-M-15 (Nicolas-Chanoine et al. J Antimicrob Chemother 2008; 61: 273–81), present study was carried out to evaluate prevalence of this among extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. isolates and also molecularly characterize ESBL other than CTX-M-15.
To discern the possible spread of Escherichia coli O25b:H4-ST131 clonal group in poultry and zoonotic potential avian strains, we made a retrospective search our strain collection compared findings for those strains with current strains. Thus, have characterized 19 E. isolated from 1995 to 2010 which, interestingly, harbored ibeA gene. Using this virulence gene as criterion selection, 33 human ibeA-positive obtained patients extraintestinal infections (1993 2009). All 52 shared fimH, kpsMII,...
Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) symptoms range from mild to severe illness; the cause for this differential response infection remains unknown. Unravelling immune mechanisms acting at different levels of colonization process might be key understand these differences. We carried out a multi-tissue (nasal, buccal and blood; n = 156) gene expression analysis immune-related genes patients affected by COVID-19 severities, healthy controls through nCounter technology. Mild asymptomatic cases...
ABSTRACT The nature of the SHV-1 β-lactamase gene was analyzed in 97 epidemiologically unrelated Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from clinical samples. β-Lactamase bands that focused at a pI 7.6 (SHV-1-type) 74 strains, 7.1 (LEN-1-type) 13 and 5.4 (TEM-1-type) 10 were detected by analytical isoelectric focusing (IEF). Among SHV-1-producing 40 had, addition to band, an additional band on IEF: 20 had with 5.4. Most (76.7%) carried plasmids. Transfer β-lactam resistance conjugation...
In Spain, as in many other countries, verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) strains have been frequently isolated from cattle, sheep, and foods. VTEC caused seven outbreaks Spain (six by E. O157:H7 one O111:H – [nonmotile]) recent years. An analysis of the serotypes indicated serological diversity. Among humans, O26:H11, , were found to be more prevalent. The most detected cattle O20:H19, O22:H8, O77:H41, O105:H18, O113:H21, O157:H7, O171:H2, OUT (O untypeable):H19. Different (e.g.,...
Abstract Infection with SARS-CoV-2 has highly variable clinical manifestations, ranging from asymptomatic infection through to life-threatening disease. Host whole blood transcriptomics can offer unique insights into the biological processes underpinning and disease, as well severity. We performed RNA Sequencing of individuals varying degrees COVID-19 used differential expression analysis pathway enrichment explore how transcriptome differs between mild, moderate, severe COVID-19, performing...
Wastewater surveillance has become a valuable tool to monitor the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants concern (VOCs) at community level. In this study, we aimed evaluate presence Alpha (B.1.1.7), Beta (B.1.351), Delta (B.1617.2), and Omicron (B.1.1.529) VOCs in samples from inlet wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) as well two different sewer interceptors (SI-1 SI-2) urban sewage system Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, NW Spain) throughout 2021 January 2022. For purpose, detection quantification...
We describe Zika virus (ZIKV) vertical transmission in an imported case Spain, a 17-week pregnant woman. ZIKV IgG, IgM and RNA were detected serum week 17. At 19 weeks, ultrasound scan revealed fetal malformations was the amniotic fluid. Pregnancy terminated at 21; autopsy of fetus bilateral hydrocephalus, brain microcalcifications arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. umbilical cord tissue.
Abstract Background Community-acquired (CA) and healthcare-associated (HCA) infections caused by carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) are not well characterized. The objective was to provide detailed information about the clinical molecular epidemiological features of nosocomial, HCA CA Klebsiella pneumoniae (CP-Kp) Escherichia coli (CP-Ec). Methods A prospective cohort study performed in 59 Spanish hospitals from February March 2019, including first 10 consecutive patients whom...
Cefiderocol is a novel siderophore-conjugated cephalosporin developed for the treatment of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial (GNB) infections. However, current gold standard cefiderocol susceptibility testing, broth microdilution (BMD) using iron-depleted cation-adjusted Mueller-Hinton broth, presents challenges many microbiology laboratories. In this study, we evaluate real-world performance disc diffusion (DD) and commercial BMD method (ComASP
